My almost 18 yr old hates school and most things related. When he graduated you will probably all hear my with of relief no matter where you live!
His "might as well be" girlfriend wanted him to go to prom and he didn't want to. She went with a friend. Prom is tonight and he is seeing pics and I think he secretly wishes he went! Especially since she is so beautiful!
Anyone else's kid not want to go?

I was that kid. I could count on one hand the number of people I liked and none of them went either. We hung out and did our own thing. Didn't regret it then and still don't.
If he is having regrets maybe it's because he would have liked to have spent that time with her...not so much the prom. Maybe they could go out for an evening and get dressed up. Celebrate their own way?

No, I have a 17 yr old daughter who would love to go but due to missing so much school the last couple of years and having no energy for activities etc, due to illness, has no real friends left and nobody to go to prom with, not even girlfriends. So today is prom and she's hanging out at home with us. I made a nice dinner and in a bit we're going to watch some movies. It will have to do. Maybe next year

DS graduated two years ago. He didn't go to prom. It made me sad but I don't think he cared. I still think he feels he didn't miss out. He had a few friends in HS and none of them went. He is much more social in college. I think he "found his people."

My son would have no part of it.
I desperately wanted to go. But, no date. Back in my day, no girl went without a date.
I like the idea now of a group of kids going.

My oldest would have rather stuck a sharp needle in his eye. My youngest went with his girlfriend and they both didn't think it was that great.

My son didn't go. I didn't even know it was prom until I saw photos on Facebook. His friend has mandatory prom at her weird tiny school. She didn't want to go either, so he said do you want me to take you? She would have been assigned a date.  Not prom, but I wish I would not have attended my graduation ceremony. I was over high school the second month of my senior year. I was given all kinds of threats if I didn't go. I later learned it was all lies!  ETA: There's no prom at my daughter's school but I know she doesn't care. |

I didn't go- had to have a date back then and no one asked.
DS wouldn't have missed it for the world. The time in high school is so fleeting, I'm glad he wanted to experience all.of it.

Yes, my son refused to go. His gf at that time was so cute as they would have looked adorable, but she didn't want to go either. At least my DD went and I have pics of her!

DD didn't go to junior prom this year. She's just not that interested, and I'm OK with that. She did go to an ROTC ball with her boyfriend last month, so maybe she was all danced out.

he's not mine but he's been raised by parents. (and the help of my siblings ) My 18yr old nephew. My sister asked him if he was going. He shrugged it off. He has one girl that he's been friends with but not really dating. There is a group of them that hang out. He did mention doing a group thing but didn't seem all that excited about it. I was never really excited about the dances either. And sort of the same thing where it was usually a huge group; I only went to two on individual date dances. Preferred the groups. A lot more fun.I hope he at least goes with his group. He's not a planner either.

DS didn't go - no interest
DD didn't go to Jr Prom this year - no interest and I will be surprised if she goes to Sr next year. She went to ONE military ball and called us in tears begging to come home - she hated it. She went to one winter formal and has NO interest in another - she had a date for that one.
we'll have to see what younger DD does when it's her turn.
DH went to his - I didn't go to mine

I went to Florida instead, with hairdressers, for a convention. This was 1983. They gave me a makeover and cut all my hair off to make me look older so we could go barhopping. I think i probably had a better time. 🍻

My middle child has zero interest. We even told him everything would be paid for by us if he went but nothing. He said very few people went but that is not what the facebook mom posts showed the next day.
My oldest went to every dance and I'm guessinh when my youngest starts HS next year he will be very involved in school functions. |

My son had no desire to go to any of the dances. I think him and his buddies went to one Homecoming dance. That was it. It was sad on one hand, but gladly I didn't have to shell out any money on dress clothes. Now DD went to 3 or 4 of them.. so at least I got my fill and pictures. She was into everything, he just wanted out.  |

DS (currently in HS) seems to have no interest. DD19 is a college sophomore and went to a dance or 2 but didn't really have much use for them. Prom she found to be a complete waste of money. She got her then boyfriend and a gang of friends to go thrift store clothes shopping and then had their own little "prom" that night. Paint-balling!
They had a ball. (but not a dance!)

DS #1 graduated 5 years ago and never went to prom. He was in JROTC and did go to the military ball, but didn't take a date.
DS #2 is currently in high school and is also in JROTC. Every year he's been in JROTC he's taken a girl to the military ball. Each time it's been a different girl.
I went to my senior prom. For me it was awkward. I was dating a man who was several years older than I was and he was my date. We went, danced a few dances, and left early to enjoy a nice dinner. He just didn't have anything in common with my friends from school and I didn't realize when I asked him to go with me how awkward it would be.

Dd wasn't going because her girlfriends weren't going. Then she changed her mind 5 days before prom and it was a scramble to get everything done in time.

I didn't have a date so I didn't go to either Jr. or Sr. prom. I feel like I'm a well-rounded adult, and I have no regrets at all. I didn't care at the time, either.

We had an anti-prom party for anyone who didn't want to go to the real one. I am willing to bet it was more fun. It was certainly more ridiculous. A bunch of girls showed up in wedding dresses and jumped into the pool. It was the original trash the dress |

My ds hated school and in fact left his high school after junior year and enrolled in the county alternative school for his senior year. He could have gone to prom since he still had all his friends there. But he was one of the "sharp stick to the eye" types that someone mentioned above. Lol. I didn't mind too much because it did save us some money. Plus, I'd already had my chance at photos of him dressed in a tux for his band concerts. Lol

My DS did not go to a single school dance including prom. On the day of his senior prom, on my way home from work, I drove by where the prom was being held. I saw all the chairs set up and excitement of the parents waiting for the "walk in"....I cried the rest of the way home. Looking back, I feel I was being ridiculous but at the time I was so sad. haha

Maybe next year My dd is in a teen/young adult support group for cancer patients. I am not assuming your DD has cancer, but maybe there is a group at her hospital for her illness. This group has the most amazing prom. It is way, way better than any prom at a typical high school. It has everything a typical prom has plus activities designed just for sick kids. There are lots of table games, i pads, roaming magicians, facing painting, etc...etc.. for patients that do not feel up to or can't dance. They have quiet rooms to rest and get away from the music. They have amazing themes and over the top decorations and even a red carpet walk in. They have foods, candies, dip n dots, you name it for the kids.. There are also celebrities.. NFL & NBA players, pro cheerleaders, TV personalities, etc...etc... etc.. that escort, take prom pictures, and hang out with the patients. They provide limos, dresses, tuxedos, shoes, jewelry, make-up and hair services to those who need it. The patients are sent home with a "swag bag" including their prom pictures already printed and framed. There are nurses and doctors there if needed. At her high school, after being diagnosed, she could not find a date for homecoming or prom (even though she was homecoming queen and on the prom court).. Nobody wants to go with the sick girl!! Many teens just can not handle the life/death fact of it all and just want to have fun and be oblivious to hard things like cancer. She had to take a girl cousin from another school to homecoming and SHE asked 2 or 3 boys to prom before finding a date. But at the prom for cancer patients.....they are all so supportive and just have a great time!!!! I hope you find something like this near you so she can have a prom next time. hugs to your DD.. |
