I've been using reading glasses for about 7 years but I could tell that my distance vision was worsening. Last week I went to the eye doctor and was fitted for mono vision contacts. My dominant eye is corrected for distance and my other eye for up close. It's a huge improvement but I can't read small print. I go back to the doctor next week but I was wondering what other people's experience is with this. Do you get corrected enough not to need reading glasses at all or am I going to still need them to read small print.

I was hesitant to try them, and resisted it for years. Once I got them, I wondered what took me so long.
It's been maybe 7 years, and they've been adjusted a few times. I can read comfortably without any reading glasses, even fine print and at the computer all day. It's not perfect, and I prefer to take my contacts out for things like needlework. My distance vision is good, too, except at night for some reason.
It doesn't work for everyone. I've gone to several different optometrists over the years, and their fittings can vary. The right prescription will make all the difference. Keep trying out different combinations until you find one that works, and give it time to get used to the prescription.

When I had monovision contacts, I loved it and never needed reading glasses. Your eye doc may have hesitated to make the reading RX too strong at first until you get used to it.

I occasionally use my readers but can usually manage without them. Certainly I use them a lot less than I did before having mono.

It didn't work for me. I just wear my Vera Bradley readers.

I have been wearing them for years and love them. However, in the last few years, I have had to start wearing readers for computer work. One eye is for distance and one for reading (like a book or my phone), but I don't have any mid-vision. So I keep a cheap pair of readers at my desk at work and another at my desk at home.

I only need correction for distance so, I don't have to use readers ever. If you were using readers before it sounds like your near vision Rx isn't correct yet. It did take me a couple of weeks to get the distance Rx dialed in. Don't give up! I seriously love monovision.

Thanks! I will ask the doctor to tweak the prescription for me. I can't believe I waited so long to go to the eye doctor,

I wore them for awhile but never really completely adjusted. I switched to multifocals and I love them. Probably even more important...I switched to daily wear. They are expensive but so much more comfortable on my aging eyes. No matter what kind I have, I still have to wear readers for extremely small print, dark lighting, or at night if my eyes are tired.

One of my daughters has daily wear and she loves them, except when she went on a month long backpack trip in Europe and had to take 30 pairs. They took up valuable space! On the way home she had room for souvenirs though. I don't know what brand they gave me since I'm wearing the ones from the doctor's office but they are so comfortable I keep thinking I must have lost one. I won't order a supply until my prescription is figured out, hopefully after this week.

I didn't have very good luck. My mid vision was great with them, but close and distance were never clear. I really wanted to like them. My doctor told me from the get go I probably wouldn't be happy and my eyes would be exhausted by the day.
I hope you have much better luck.

I've had them for a few years and I love them. I've had glasses since I was 9 and contacts since I was 12. This allows me to keep wearing the contacts and not worry about glasses for a bit longer.

I'm like you and have to use readers for fine print, mostly when reading medication boxes/packaging. My doc said I won't get the results with the mono vision that I do with glasses. I don't know if it's because of my prescription, or a problem with mono vision in general.
My glasses give me better vision at ALL distances. I chalk it up to the convenience of not having something sitting on my face, vs a slightly less clear visual experience.

Love them! Had them for a long time. I have gas permeable contacts.

I've been wearing monovision for at least 20 years. Sometimes however, small print requires more light and, occasionally, magnification

They didn't work for me. I have severe floaters. I need both eyes available for every focal length, because at any moment there can be a giant cloud obscuring either eye. One eye is much worse than the other, which I didn't realize until I tried monovision and found that I basically couldn't read anything!
I used to wear multifocal contacts with reasonable success, but I still needed readers for low light or extremely small print. Glasses give me the best results, but I may get some more multifocals, because I'm tired of being a four-eyes every single day!

Love it. I don't need glasses to read, but I sometimes need some extra help for small work like beading or needlework. I wear Air Optix Night and Day lenses, I take them out once a week to clean them. I've been wearing them for several years, they work well on these old eyes.

I wore them for awhile but never really completely adjusted. I switched to multifocals and I love them. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my multi-focal lenses. I tried the mono vision, and could just never adjust to it. It took a few tweaks to get the multi focals down, but I love them. I am back to reading a lot again. I had stopped reading much because it was a pain to see. Now I can read menus without digging out reading glasses. I can really really tiny print now.

I wore contacts for many years. I loved them it was for distance driving :)as I got older my eyes got worse so I tried the bifocal contacts. I hated them It was hard to see since I am a crafter/scrapper...I could not see when I did my scrapping at all so I went back to mono vision contaacts and use a magnifiying glass if i need or move my head :)I quit wearing contacts so when i got my new glasses I got mono vision only I can take them off if I need for scrapping or use a magnifyer

I just started monovision and so far so good. I tried multifocal contacts and I hated them. I just wear a right contact for distance and I don't need readers. I love it that it's half the price for me too!

Reporting back - the doctor upped the magnification in my "near" eye and I couldn't be happier. It's been a week and the only time I have used readers is after I take my contacts out and want to read in bed. I am so glad I went to the eye doctor and tried mono vision.
