I say kitty-corner, and have never heard anyone say catty-corner, though it's always been my understanding that catty-corner is "correct." Who knows lol
ETA: I don't know about anyone else, but I only use kitty-corner when I'm talking about some kind of intersection. Like there are two Starbucks stores kitty-corner from each other at Main and 2nd. Or the Joneses' house is kitty-corner from ours. I wouldn't use it to mean diagonal in other circumstances.

Who knows lol I have never really heard catty-corner other than reading it or on the internet, but georgiapea used it in another thread and it just made me wonder. Thanks for responding.

I've never heard the term "catty corner" before. The things you learn here.

Growing up I only heard catty corner.
I'm in the blue part of the map, so that seems accurate.
I don't hear anyone say it now and don't say it myself. I would say diagonal.

catty corner or catty wampus.
Kitty corner just sounds so wrong.

Kitty corner is what I've always heard, but now that I think about it, neither makes much sense.

catty corner or catty wampus. Kitty corner just sounds so wrong. i thought catty wampus meant when things were all mixed up, not lined up correctly. I have heard that term before.

I grew up with catty cornered, but when I lived in the midwest, I also used kitty cornered so people would understand me.
Also, I grew up with catty-wompus meaning a huge mess that someone or something made. When the tenants moved out, they left my house all catty-wompus.

I was raised in Oregon and have always said catty-corner. Hubby was raised in Arizona and has always said kitty-corner. I've never heard anyone else say kitty-corner until this thread!

I have never heard cattywampus (catty wampus?). I spelled it catty-wampus fist and Spell check wanted to change that to catty-pompus. Is that such a word? Cattywampus is an interesting term that I will now be on the lookout for.

Both - Kitty may be used more though. Raised on the west coast by people raised in the east.

What phrase do you use when talking about something being diagonal? I will say I mainly use it in respect to buildings or houses that are diagonally across from each other.

I use catty-wampus to mean something that has been all turned upside down and messed up from how it should be. I spent all day cleaning the toy closet, but after one playdate it's all catty-wampus again.

I've always said catty-whompered just because I liked the sound of it.
