Another Kansan!
Other than the current politicians. Kansas is a great place. Very friendly people, generally low crime, (there are exceptions as there are everywhere)
It is a BIG state. 400 miles across east to west and 200 miles north to south.
Winters can be bitterly cold. Summers ridiculously hot. She will want to be prepared for the cold.. but she won't need her heavy coat, boots, hats gloves etc very often.
I hope she has a wonderful time.

Bwa hahhahahahaha. When I first went to school in Montana I kept asking people why they had electric chargers on their cars. As an aside, did you actually need to use a block heater here? I know we can get stupid cold, but not like in the northern states. NEED would be overstating things a bit. The last Subie I had came from Nebraska (where it tends to be colder/snowier), and it already had one installed. As it happens, there are conveniently-placed power outlets where I park for work, so after 10 years of being spoiled by hopping into a car where the heat was warm immediately, I decided to go ahead and get another block heater installed on the new one. Since my car's always garaged when I'm at home, I only use it at work, which really only amounts to 3-5 times a winter, I'd guess. We also considered that Subies generally have a higher resale value in colder climates, so it should theoretically boost resale value. The reality, though, is I'm just a little spoiled (and I don't care about, like fancy sound systems or something, so I got this instead). Another sorry for the hijack post. I live in Vermont (where the unofficial state car is the Subaru...hahaha) and don't really know anyone that has block heaters anymore. Climate change? But I will tell you that the 2 most important things on my Subaru are the seat heaters and automatic car starter. I will never have another car, if at all possible, without them - especially the seat heater.

Another KS pea here. You are welcome to PM me for any information. I'm happy to share if she is coming near me!
She will get to experience the different weather our area offers- spring, summer, fall, & winter. Yes, we get cold & hot, but the extremes can vary depending on what part of the state she is in. Kansas is typically known for being a welcoming & friendly area. I hope she finds it to be that way!

I grew up north of Kansas in Nebraska. I moved one state west and the weather here is much different. The midwest is a bit of a crap shoot in the winter. Plan for layers. Lots of layers!

Another Kansas checking in! I live in the suburbs of Kansas City. It doesn't get that cold here, and if it does get cold, it doesn't stay cold for long. I hope your dd has a great time!

I thought Colorado was the unofficial state for Subaru!! HAHA.... I am pretty sure that Asheville, NC is the unofficial city for Subaru. I'll never forget driving into my daughter's school parking lot when we moved here and there was not one but three identical green Subaru outbacks! This is cracking me up. I drive a Subaru and here in California, they are known as the "lesbian" vehicle! I didn't know that until someone pointed out that a woman in another Subaru was checking us out and they said it was because of my car. WTH?? I didn't believe it at first, but came to learn that yeah, Subaru is somewhat jokingly referred to as the official car of lesbians. My gay friends confirmed it for me. Apparently, Subaru realized that gays were more likely to buy their vehicles due to both the practicality and the outdoors appeal. They began an advertising campaign that focused on that segment of the population and has been recognized as a company that supported gay/lesbian rights, sending many to purchase their vehicles in response. I told him it wasn't fair that they get to claim all the good stuff like that. I love my Subaru. In fact, when I move to Oregon, I plan on getting another one, which will make it my third Subaru. My son set out to buy a BMW last year and after weeks of test driving and research, ended up with a Subaru. He loves it too. He picked a more sporty vehicle than my Forester. I guess we are a Subaru family now, and I'm happy to have one. SaveSaveSaveSave

But it is a good place for her to be - they have hills & trees haha. Seriously though, it's a nice area. And I'm pretty sure there's a yarn shop somewhere up around there.

A small town near Topeka :-) She'll be miles ahead if she knows what a Jayhawk is!! Rock Chalk baby! She's not that far from KC if she wants access to a bigger city. Both Topeka and Lawrence are great towns and actually a nice way to experience the states without going to a major metro area. The state capitol is in Topeka and worth a tour if that interests her. Check out a basketball game at KU and they'll teach her to wave the wheat.

maybe cold compared to New Zealand...but not too bad for the US do you know a city? A small town near Topeka :-) I live in Topeka, so if you need me to do any spying..... Lots of the towns near here have just a few hundred people, Topeka is larger at about 110,000 but we always head to Kansas City to do any shopping or a night out on the town. She definitely needs to visit KC.
Also, in Topeka she can take a tour of the State Capital. THey recently just opened up the stairs to the very top. Its a frightening walk, on a cat walk up the middle of the dome and around 200 steps. But the views when you step outside of the very tippy top are awesome!
I am not sure how far away from Topeka she will be but lots of the small towns around us send their kids to our high school. My kids go to a rural high school that encompasses a lot of the tiny towns around us, as we live on the edge of Topeka.
If you want to tell me the name of the town (or PM it to me) I can give you more info about the city or schools.

My DMIL is in Topeka (about an hour away from us), and my folks are in Emporia, which is about 45 minutes from Topeka. Please PM if there's anything I can do to help out! My niece goes to Emporia High - it would be so fun if that's where your DD happens to be!

Yes it is - I was born there (in Liberal, not Dorothy's house lol). I'm delighted to see so many fellow Jayhawks here. *waving* Another Jayhawk waving the wheat!! Born and raised in KS but haven't lived there since 2005. Won't ever come back either.
