My husband and I are going to Charleston for a week to celebrate our 25th anniversary. I'm looking forward to it because I've never been to this part of the country before. I have a very nice tourist guide from the tourist bureau and found some things that sound fun or interesting. But I thought this would be a good place to ask for the real scoop. We love history, definitely want to see Fort Sumter and maybe some of the historic plantations. We will probably spend at least one day at a local beach. We like to shop in funky shops, cool neighborhoods, little towns. We don't mind driving around. Our hotel is in the Mt. Pleasant area. So any beach, attraction, restaurant recommendations would be great, thanks!

I lived in Columbia for five years, and we drove down to Charleston a lot. Here are a few of my favorite things:
1. Walking around Market Street -- shops, restaurants, etc. I like Rue de Jean there for lunch (french bistro/brasserie type restaurant) and FIG for dinner; Husk is supposed to be amazing, but it opened after I moved, so I haven't been there.
2. You can head south from there and walk around the battery, which is the gracious old homes on the waterfront.
3. Sullivan's Island is such a nice beach community, and Poe's Tavern is a great place there to grab a meal.
4. The beaches on the Isle of Palm are probably my favorites around Charleston. Folly Beach to the south is nice too.
Have a great time!

Any of the historic home tours on the Battery are wonderful. We always loved the silly tourist carriage tours, too. The old historic downtown of Charleston is just lovely. You could just walk around and watch people and find things to delight you -- well, in 2008, that is. I haven't been there since the recession happened. I hope you have a wonderful vacation!

Definitely take a drive out to Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms. I really enjoy just wandering around Middleton Place and Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, too.
My favorite Charleston restaurants:
Halls Chophouse McCrady's Magnolias The Macintosh Boxcar Betty's Callie's Hot Little Biscuit

Definitely the Plantations: Boone and Magnolia! We loved the carriage ride tour of the historic district. Patriot's Point is great if you are a military buff.

My military history buffs husband and son liked Ft. Sumter, Ft. Moultrie, and Patriot's Point. (Did Patriot's Point with a Groupon.) We also did a Civil War walking tour.
My daughter and I did several of the historic home tours, but we were underwhelmed with the docents. The Nathaniel Russell House was definitely our favorite (and had the best docent).
The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon has a lively guided tour of the dungeon.
Went to a great soul food restaurant called The Glass Onion, but it's in the opposite direction of where you're staying,
The carriage rides are a good introduction.
(We were there at Christmas, so no plantations or beaches.)
Happy anniversary!

I don't think anyone has mentioned the USS Yorktown yet. We visited after Christmas and thought it was really cool.

Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island are both fantastic.
My favorite restaurant in Charleston is Hominy Grill.

I stayed in mount pleasant in march. Love the area. You are near the isle of palms beach. So pretty. I swear the sand glitters like gold. Sol Has great food. We did apps there and had a blackberry mojito. I am still thinking of the tuna! So good!
jestines in charleston is fantastic. Real authentic southern food. Slightly north of broad(SNOB) was perfect for lunch. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was perfect. Shem creek is fun. All of the restaurants have a good vibe and so fun to hang and people watch. We kayaked shem creek, shopped at charleston market and searched for hidden alleyways south of broad Have fun!

I live. Charleston, I was born and raised here and I count myself blessed to be able to say that.
You e gotten some great suggestions for things to do. Particularly to kayak Shem Creek, you can also rent paddle boards. It's almost a sure thing that you will see dolphins swim alongside you. I'd also recommend going to see the Angel Oak, a magnificent 1000yo oak tree on Johns Island, it's about an hour from Mt Pleasant but a beautiful drive and worth it.
I can recommend dozens of restaurants, it just depends on your tastes. For real southern food, Justine's Kitchen (downtown) and Page's Okra Grill (Mt Pleasant). BBQ: Poogans Smokehouse, Lewis BBQ or Rodney Scott. For original Charleston food: Butcher and Bee, Husk, Tattooed Moose, the Wreck. Seafood: Fleet Landing, Roadside Kitchen, Bowens Island, the Boathouse on Breach Inlet. Fine dining: Circa 1886, Magnolias, Cypress, Halls Chophouse, Zero George. Poe's and Rutledge Cab Co have the best burgers. Definitely ask at the hotel for recommendations. You'll need reservations for any fine dining restaurant. Please please avoid Hyams, Bubba Gumps, Ruth Chris there's so much better local food than any of these clowns.

We visited last year and had a wonderful time. I really enjoyed Boone plantation. We also enjoyed walking around the Battery and surrounding neighborhoods. It's a beautiful city. If we go back we will stay in Mt Pleasant also. I liked that area.
