We're doing several road trips this summer; a couple of them more than two weeks long. I have my standard go-to car snacks, but looking for new ideas as well. We don't usually stop for lunch in a restaurant; just find a park and eat along the way. We'll have a nice cooler along which keeps things quite cold, so perishability isn't too much of a concern. We stay in hotels along the way, and most have a refrigerator in the room for keeping things cold overnight too.
What are your favorites?

A 2 week road trip?!?!? A margarita with a sedative on the side. Nuts, trail mix, cheese sticks, chex mix LOL! These trips are with my husband! I did a two week road trip several years ago with my then 15-year old daughter. 24/7 with her, and we still like each other!

We go through a bag of baby carrots and grapes most afternoons on a road trip.
Peanuts, pistachios and jerky are also in our rotation.
Cuties or any easy peal orange is perfect.
Chips are in the mix, too.

My absolute favorite road trip food is a big container of chilled red grapes all pre-plucked from the bunch. They are sweet without being overly sweet. They are not sticky or crumby. They serve as both a snack and a way to keep your mouth from feeling dry, so you don't have to constantly drink beverages and therefore require more rest stops. My second favorite snack are cashews. They are more filling and they give you a bit of the crunchy and if you choose, a salty component that's obviously missing from grapes.

My friend introduced me to making a mix of goldfish crackers and wasabi peas - two goldfish to one wasabi in each bite. LOL. It's really good with a little kick :-)

When doing an extensive road trip we take the following (some aren't snacks more meals lol):
In a cooler: hot dogs (use park grill with some foil) pasta salad deli meat & cheese (make sandwiches with chips) antipasta salad applesauce cups hummus/salsa cups
Just snacks: chips baby carrots pistachios beef jerky Swedish fish candy flavoured pretzels pudding cups halos pop tarts lunchables
Also a variety of beverages in their own cooler. We also bring hand wipes and some buns and foil condiment packets for the hot dogs/sandwiches. Generally we eat fairly healthy but road trips are for junk food/comfort food. lol

I eat such crap in the car on road trips. My go tos are Combos, Red Vines, a bag of Chicago style popcorn, trail mix, those crappy little sleeves of chocolate doughnuts. I like the snack kits I've seen some Moms post. They use one of the embroidery floss storage containers and in each compartment put a snack serving like nuts, grapes, m&ms, goldfish, etc. I may make one for me on my next road trip so I don't sit there and eat the entire bag of chips. Besides sweets, my go-tos for road trips include pretzels, hummus and carrots, PB and celery, almonds, tons of fruit, babybel cheese.

My mom used to make a huge bowl of popcorn with m&m's, raisins, peanuts and pass it out to us in big paper cups. We loved that, especially because we never got m&m's at home! We take a laundry basket with chips, pretzels, m&m's, granola or cereal bars, water or crystal light, bananas or apples (whatever needs to be used up in the fridge). My husband likes to suck on hard candy while he drives, he says it keeps him awake. I like the snack box idea for little kids. I wish I had known that when my kids were little!

I'm another one that loves grapes. They're easy to eat, not greasy. I like to mix in cheese cubes with. I tend to only want a snack driving if it's more than 2-3 hours in distance though.

It's not a snack, but my kids' favorite road trip lunch are sandwiches made by buying a loaf of Italian bread and slicing it 99% of the way thru. Then we put ham, cheese, Mayo, etc in every other slot to make connected sandwiches. Some peanut butter and jelly too. Then slide the loaf back in the wrapper and put in cooler. When we get to the picnic you just rip off your sandwich. It's simple but for some reason they love the big sandwich loaf lol.

I am boycotting snacks for car trips because my family makes the biggest mess ever when we have food or drinks in the car! But I love the ideas here! When I pick up my college daughter, I can take the snack ideas with me! I won't make a mess!

Have you ever had the fruit plate on Alaska Airlines? (I'm sure other airlines have it too). We always made "airplane food" when we traveled with the girls when they were young; just different kinds of cheeses, crackers, grapes, apple slices, maybe strawberries in personal tupperware. Oh, and that oh-so-important small piece of chocolate. I had to laugh when last year my adult daughter, her husband and four other friends from college went on a road trip... and daughter supplied "airplane food" for everyone!

Our must haves include Cheese-its, Goldfish, beef jerky and Blue Diamond Smoked Almonds. DDs have added Funions for their families and I can't stand to be in the car.

Our official road trip requirements are Combos, Twizzlers, and Pringles. We also love string cheese, grapes, baby carrots, and our own trail mix we made with nuts, raisins, M&Ms, and pretzels.

Cheetos and Pepsi have long been my favorites. Lately we have been stopping for breakfast - eat on the road Bojangles. A combo with egg for the Hubs, plain sausage biscuit for me. Bo's makes the BEST sausage biscuits.

Pringles and some kind of sour candy!!
We always stop to eat because it's just me doing the driving!
Last year I put almost 3,000 miles on a rental car...
I find good music and books on tape are crucial to a good road trip!!

We like the usual goldfish, pretzels, grapes, cheese sticks. For times when we stop and want something more substantial, or need a late snack in the hotel if we had an early supper I get a package of mini croissants and a sliced ham and a cheese. These can be eaten at any time of day and are more filling than just chips.

For snacking, I make snack baggies of pre sliced apples, grapes, berries, nuts of all types, jerky, and what ever crispy chip/cracker is appealing the day I make my purchases. Bottles of water, tea, or soda to quench thirst.
For the cooler and meal types of things to have at a hotel room I like sandwiches like egg salad or ham/cheese. Some of the pinterest salads in a jar are good meal additions too. I'll add in some of those small bottles of wine to have while winding down in my room.
And put some things in the cooler for a quick breakfast the next morning like a couple containers of yogurt to tide me over until I find a place to eat a meal.

Just took a road trip 2 weeks ago and this is some of what we brought. We had a 5 yo and when kids are bored, they eat. And eat. He went through so much food lol! Tried to keep it somewhat healthy but not always easy when we didn't pack a cooler.
Dried mango from Trader Joe's Pringles or other chips Pretzels Apples Bananas Grapes Fig newtons Dum dums (Tiny suckers) Jelly bellys
Case of water! Extremely important!!!
Also pick ziploc bags, paper towels, hand sanitizer and wet wipes! You need something for trash and wipes are always a good idea to clean your hands before eating or after using the gross rest stops.
Hope that helps!

Snack IdeasYou can come on road trips with me and my friends any time, you would fit right in! I have to have something salty (Pringles sour cream and onion, cheddar Chex mix, nuts), something sweet like Red Vines or Twizzlers, something chocolate (Peanut M&M's usually, but other chocolate stuff finds its way to the car too like Barkthins dark chocolate with almonds), and some kind of cookies.
