A neighbor gave us his cap and gown set from last year for DS. I thought I was going to be able to save a bunch of money as the set costs $50. However, I needed to buy a required stole and tassel because they both have dates on them. Those two accessories cost $37! Oh, come on. That is ridiculous. I wondered if anyone bought them second hand. You would think the gowns, worn only for one day, would surface on FB sale sites, considering how expensive they are. Or you would think the schools would set up a collection for unwanted gowns, to give them to kids the following year, who couldn't afford them. They must, right?

There are differences in different companies and even different models (styling details, dye lots) so it can be hard to use older ones. Once you gets several of them together from different times/places you realize they don't look as cohesive as imagined. The ones we used (university) a couple of years ago were made from recycled plastics (water/soda bottles) There were "gown recycle" bins set up outside the graduation area. As people finished taking photos and got ready to leave, we could toss the gown in the recycle bin right then or take it to the campus book store the following week to recycle. Or keep it (mine is still in my closet)

I don't remember how much they were. The boy's gown is hanging in my laundry room, waiting to be donated to the high school for a kid who can't afford one. I'm a bit late for that this year. There were many students wanting to donate their gown here and were told it's not allowed. Something about dye lots. Um, the girls wore white. What dye lot?!

My sons cap and gown were $75 (plus shiping if you ordered off the website or free shipping if you ordered in person at the school).

We paid around 75 for my son. Tassel, cap and gown. Oldest DD used her brother's hand me down, actually started a trend/tradition, and just purchased the tassel for around $15. Several of her friends decided to use their sibling's cap and gown because she did. I really feel the school should ask for old gown to recycle or purchase gowns to be used and then returned. Youngest DD intends to use the siblings stuff too. Im grateful that they like the sentimentality of sharing!

DS graduates HS in 3 weeks. His gown rental was $25. He has to turn in the gown, to receive his diploma. Cap and tassel were $15 to purchase. Honors stoles and academic cords are gifted to the students by the school. The activities cords are $15 to purchase.

we couldn't re-use caps and gowns when we were in high school because each class's caps and gowns were in their particular class colors. The high school colors are black and orange, but when I graduated in 1987, our 'class colors' were silver and lavender. (I believe we chose the colors before our junior prom; the prom venue was decorated in those colors, and those were the colors used for our graduation announcements.) So the caps and gowns we girls wore were lavender, and the boys' caps and gowns were silver. We had two tassels- on in the class colors to wear during graduation, and one we could purchase in the school colors.

We had different packages. $250 = 50 Announcements, Thank you notes, Portfolio, Grad Gift? (surprise), Pendant or bracelet. No mention of Cap & Gown, but I'm assuming they had to have been included. $180 = 25 Announcements, Thank you notes, Grad Gift? Cap & Gown, Tassel. $185 = 25 Photo Announcements, Grad Gift? Cap & Gown, Tassel, T-Shirt. $47 = Cap and Gown with tassel. $62 = Cap & Gown with tassel, T-shirt. $87 = Cap & Gown with tassel, choice of T-Shirt & Hoodie or T-Shirt and Tassel frame. Gowns are rented and have to be turned in immediately after graduation. I believe orders had to be in mid March and Graduation is next week.

DS is graduating this year and the seniors had to complete a survey by the end of last week and if they didn't do it they were going to be banned from participating in the ceremony. That sounds like a silly reason to be banned from graduation. What on Earth was the survey about?

Never bought one. In HS, the school owned them and we were all fitted prior to graduation. In College, it was the same.

Slightly off-topic but this seems like the perfect place to finally get an answer to this question I've been wondering about: do all pupils/students in the US do the cap and gown graduation ceremony? Is it also like that in Canada? Do you have to buy a mandatory cap and gown uniform from the school? (I've never had a graduation ceremony, whether in school or at uni. ) We didn't do the cap and gown thing at my high school. We wore long white gowns, all the same, carried a dozen red roses, and a crown of laurel leaves. I went to an all girls school, and each class chooses their own dress. My years was the ugliest I have ever seen!

That sounds like a silly reason to be banned from graduation. What on Earth was the survey about? Oh, I agree. There was a collective eyeroll when the email came out but I never saw the survey (it was online via the student's google accounts). DS's response was he was going to tell them to hire all new librarians, so it sounds like they were looking for some very specific feedback. The school is relatively new with DS's class being the 5th to graduate.
