A few weeks ago I scored an awesome deal on this trimmer at a garage sale (got it for $10!). I love it, since I can finally get straight cuts. There's just one small problem. Whenever I try to cut a piece of cardstock down the 11 inch length, the paper just gets torn and the edges are ruined. Anything smaller, like up to 8 inches is cut fine though. I tried cutting up some foil to sharpen the blade (as suggested by the former owner), but that didn't really help. What can I do to sharpen the blade all the way? Thanks in advance!

I have that same cutter and love it! At the time I got mine, Tonic recommended "cutting air" to sharpen the blade. You just act like you're cutting something without anything there.
Also, it doesn't hurt to rub both sides of the blade (on the handle and on the platform) with some rubbing alcohol on a pad. Sometimes, if you cut something sticky, you get residue or even a small piece of paper stuck to the blade and you don't notice it's there, but the cutter won't cut properly until you get rid of that residue.

Sweet deal! I have the 6x12 version and haven't had this problem. Check if you can tighten the screw that attaches the blade arm just a tiny bit. Usually it's because it's loose. I think it needs a hex size driver...if you don't have one I'd say contact a Tonic and ask them. I can't remember if mine came with one.

Hold the cutter arm closer to the table. Just a little bit of pressure. Always try to cut with the grain rather than across the grain.

I have the same problem with my 4x6 one! I can't actually cut a 6" piece of paper.

In the mean time, cut down about 6 inches then turn the paper around to finish the other side.

I always get best results when I focus on pulling the blade inwards toward the base as I cut. If I don't pay attention, I tend to get torn-up ends, too.

Is there a nick in the blade that you can see?

Is there a nick in the blade that you can see? I don't believe there is, but I will try to take a closer look... Thanks for the suggestion!
