Age old problem, right? Working on a page with one portrait and one landscape 4x6. trimming one to 4x4 isn't an option, and I'm tired of the same couple of ways I do these types of pages. Can ya'll share your favorite pages or sketches with this combination, please? I need some new ideas! I've looked on pinterest of course, but would love to see what yall have done! Thanks so much! Cindy

Make a block of paper, then add some type of card/paper that evens out the measurements. Does that make sense? I can't post links, because I'm about to start driving g, but if you look on Glitter Girl's YouTube channel, she has a few LO's like that, too.

From pinterest (there are mini pictures here, but you get the idea -- one set is horizontal and one is vertical)

Oh woman, do I ever know what you mean....that's the go-to arrangement that I'm trying to get away from! LOL!!! I'm a huge GG fan - have seen all of her videos, and taken most of Shimelle's classes. Love her teaching style.

I really want the pictures to be really close together, ya know? I'll just have to play some more, poor me! Thanks for sharing this one, I'll definitely keep in in mind for other pages!

I agree, that is a tough arrangement to make work.

I've done a few of the block pages myself. /url] The other way I've done it is to put the photos on one side and a large embellishment or quote on the other side.

This is my dilemma with sports photos-group shot always is horizontal and individual shot is always vertical. Here's a couple fairly recent ones

I do this a bit as well - though I mostly work with smaller pics as I scrap 9x12 or 8 1/2 x 11. I either go for a grid type arrangement or overlap the photos a bit. I like Raquel Bowman's idea of a 'loose' grid arrangement and have done this on few occasions. Here's an example from Raquel:
And here are a couple of examples from me

And another one with different size photos:

I use pocket page protectors for layouts with this issue. Then I can fill in the other pockets with patterned paper and embellishments going in any direction. I find it a lot easier this way keeping everything in it's own assigned pocket rather than trying to make everything flow together on one large background.

I've always struggled with this combination of photos to the point where I rarely include them on the same page (or do as tinaev does and use a pocket page) but here's one page design I really like. This is a shameless scraplift of a Shimelle layout from one of her more recent classes.

Lots of ideas, here. Hope you find a design that works for you, justcindy . I can see several I may be trying in the future! One of the designs they teach over at Get It Scrapped is the "bracket page design". It is formed, basically with an L shape created with overlapping strips of pp at right angles to each other. it is usually modeled with a single photo, but would support two in the two different orientations quite nicely. I used that design for this page, but only used one photo. If I had moved the border strips over a bit to the left, the page could have easily supported a landscape pic: For the love of Spring by Gramma Dee, on Flickr Here is one of mine from the gallery that uses the 2 photos, but not the bracket design.: Daddy's Boys2 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr

I don't have any advice on the finished photos but - to prevent this happening in future take all your photos in landscape mode rather than portrait. Then you can always crop the sides out. I rarely take anything in portrait mode unless I can see them being needed specifically. So, turn your phone camera sideways and don't turn your digital cameras sideways Of course, you can't control what other people do with photos they take and share with you, although I have got my husband trained now!

I could never take pics this way. It makes it REALLY hard to make an interesting 2 page spread. The LO's will eventually all start to look the same. That's no fun!

- Crop the photo square
- Crop the photo to the right or left, leaving space to...
- Add a large embellishment or cluster or journaling block
- Add a stamp directly on the photo
- Place photos on top of each other without losing important detail
I'm not entirely sure how all that choice makes layouts look the same.

Ok, that's great. Just not my style. I wouldn't want all of my photos the same direction, that's all. I don't think I've explained it well. With a landscape version you can have the choice. You can still do upright, portrait style, but you get the best of both worlds. My phone camera takes a photo about 16.5 inches wide by 10 inches high. So if I want a 6 x 4 inches tall photo I can do that. If I want a 6 x 4 inches wide photo I can do that. If I turn my phone camera so it takes a 16.5 inches high by 10 inches wide photo I lose that option. Say I want this photo to fit a 6 inches high by 4 inches wide photo frame, for example, as soon as I start to bring the height down the width decreases too. Now it no longer fits my frame and there's no background to fill the empty space either side. If I crop it once it reaches 4 inches width then my subject will lose something, either head or feet. A landscape photo doesn't mean only wide photos all the same size; they can be resized however you want, tall and thin or short and wide. A portrait photo is just that; a portrait, it can't be changed to anything else without losing something of the subject.

I get what you're saying, Jane. But the problem I would have if I took my pictures from so far away (so as to include heads and feet in a landscape frame) is that by the time I crop, the photo is too pixelated. I really could use a better camera. For me, the best thing I can do is to take a variety of photos for every occasion, up close, far away, landscape, portrait, and just hope that a few turn out well enough to print I worry about scrapping them later (sometimes years later, LOL) This thread has become a resource for me. Thanks justcindy for starting it and thanks to all who contributed to it.

Now I often print my landscape 4x6 and my vertical 3x4. They line up horizontally that way and give more design options or work well in PL.
I wanted to post a pic of a Layout I have using close to 4x6 (it may be that true digital ratio - it's an older LO), but I can't figure out how to post photos from my phone.

It doesn't cost anything to take photos - well, apart fom battery power Do check your camera is taking photos at the highest setting though. My phone camera is great at 16MP but my point-and-shoot is 8MP and I've never had pixellation problems in over 11 years of being digital. As always, my main motivation for taking photos the way I do is because - I can't hold a cmaera or a phone like the majority of people do. Mostly it's always balanced on my knee, or perhaps a table surface. I literally point and shoot and hope for the best because often I don't even see the shot before I've taken it.

Hey guys! We've been out of town and I just got home!
Man, y'all have shared some awesome ideas! The photos are from a trip to Hawaii to visit my dad, in 2002, before my first digital camera, so what I've got is what I've got, no reprinting options for me, as I've lost the negatives. ☹️ I can't wait to get back to my desk and play with some of the ideas y'all have given me, and I'll try to post the result!
Thanks again for sharing your pages and hunting down examples for me... more ideas than I had even hoped for💕😊
