Yesterday, my 8 am American Airlines flight from San Francisco to Dallas was overbooked. I thought about it, went back and forth a little bit, but decided to volunteer. I was on my way home, had nothing planned, and could use the voucher for an upcoming vacation. My new flight was 5 hours later, but I didn't mind that. Before I said yes, though, I verified that I could have a decent seat on the next flight to DFW, because that's a long flight to be stuck in a middle seat at the back of the plane. She was able to get me the exact same seat I had for the original flight, bulkhead window. You see where this is going...
By noon, my new flight started getting pushed back. Finally it was so delayed that we would land 10 minutes before my next flight. I called American and told them I knew I was going to miss my connection. The next available flight out of Dallas was this morning at 8. I told her to go ahead and book it, but I was frustrated because I had voluntarily given up my previous seat. She asked if I'd gotten a voucher and I said "Yes, but it won't pay for my hotel room tonight." So she worked some airline magic and booked me on a United flight to Denver, then home from there. She couldn't confirm me over the phone, so I had to go to an American gate agent to get confirmation.
My gate had a crazy long line for the gate agent, so I went to the next gate. She was able to print my confirmation, so it was safe for me to abandon the American flight, which was just about to finally board. United flies out of a different terminal, and there is no way to get there without leaving security. Then, because I didn't have an actual boarding pass, I had to check in at the ticket counter before I could get back through security. The line was crazy long, there were not enough employees, and my departure time was getting dangerously close. An employee, Toni (who is awesome by the way), was checking on people in the line to see if they could get out of line and check in at a kiosk. I explained my situation. She sent me to a kiosk, but stayed close helping a lady with a stroller at another kiosk. I almost made it through the check in process, then I got the "See a Representative" screen. I was near tears, and I don't get upset about bad travel. Toni came back over, took me to an empty counter and started checking me in. I mentioned that my TSA Pre-Check probably didn't transfer (thinking about how much longer it would take me to go through the regular line). She asked if I had my TSA letter with me. It just so happens I carry that letter in my laptop bag. So she re-printed boarding passes with Pre-Check on them. They normally won't do that for you at the counter. I made it to the gate as they were boarding, but of course I was in a middle seat at the back of the plane.
Denver to Little Rock was fine. My luggage made it on the original flight and was waiting for me when I landed, so that was a huge plus. I got home a little after midnight last night, completely exhausted. It was NOT worth a $500 voucher. I won't be making that mistake again.

I haven't got past the first line yet. You were in San Francisco and didn't call me? Kidding, kind of. I'm not allowed out on my own much without the 8yo. ETA and now that I've read it, UGH!! so sorry. Glad you're safe at home now.

Oh, that sounds miserable. I wouldn't want to volunteer again after that, either. Hugs!

So sorry to hear this but glad you finally got home safe and sound. We are leaving for vacation this Friday and I am very nervous about flying this time around. I haven't flown in 5 years and everything seems to have changed.

If I could afford to wait, I would probably stay at my destination longer, not the airport. In any case, you outline one of the reasons I despise SFO... Why in the world can't they figure out how to secure all the counters together? Yes, I know why, but since 9/11 they should know that airport needs a serious re-do.

I just had an awful experience with Delta this past Monday. I travel a LOT and this was the first time I ever got stuck overnight in an airport. Delta told me lie after lie and pretty much could not have cared less. Made my connection with a couple minutes to spare (raced from A 28 to E Faraway and nearly had a heart attack) and the gate agent closed the gate. I said it's not even time yet, and he said, "You were already booked on a flight tomorrow." WTF? I had to spend the night in the airport or pay a lot of money to get about 4 hours sleep. I am done with Delta. Worst experience ever in flying.

Don't volunteer. It's the freakin' Hunger Games out there...
Glad to hear you've finally made it home (with your luggage!) and are resting. Time isn't always worth the money that's being offered.

Ugh, that does suck.
I probably wouldn't volunteer if I had connecting flights. (Not saying you did anything wrong, I can just see where it could be a hassle!) I live in Atlanta, so I can fly almost anywhere in the world on a direct flight, making the hassle significantly less.

How stressful and exhausting. I wouldn't mind volunteering to give up my seat if I didn't have a connecting flight to catch at the destination airport. That kind of stuff makes me too crazy.
I have been asked to give up my seat twice. The first time, I was flying home from Mayo in Minnesota with my son after one of his surgeries. Our last names are different, so they probably didn't realize he was a child and I was flying with him. I explained that I couldn't fly separately from him, and he was so exhausted from all the medical stuff that he just wanted to get home and into his own bed. They were really nice about it and ended up switching us to business class from regular seats. My son was excited about that, but then there was an issue with the plane and we had to deplane and get on another aircraft, this time without a bump up.
The second time I was asked, it wasn't to completely give up my seat, it was to trade seats because a young couple wanted to sit together and I was flying alone. I had no problem switching to let them sit together and my new seat was better than what I gave up.
Once you go to use that voucher to fly somewhere on vacation, maybe it will soften the memory a bit.

It's a literal nightmare with no guarantees! We've never been brave enough to do it.
The flight we were on a couple weeks back (delta) was I think four seats overbooked. They got to $800/seat and DH said if they offer $1500/seat we should do it (that covers a first class upgrade cost to Hawaii ... times three of us).
It never got that high but for a direct flight I could swing it if the flight change time was decent, and we talked them into Skyclub passes and same seats on next flight.
It's truly a shame they do this as the next over terminal was offering for I believe either four or eight seats overbooked too.

I was going to go to South Dakota one time, but got caught in a blizzard (by my standards, anyway) in Wyoming and had to go to Nebraska instead. I've lived in the SF Bay Area all my life.

Just because you all are making me feel a little bad for the (totally undeserving) airlines, I wanted to say that the one time I volunteered to be bumped, it was a great experience. I was flying home out of Providence and I'm thinking it was Delta ... do they fly out of PVD? Usually I fly Southwest. Anyway, they needed to bump a bunch of people and I didn't need to be home in a hurry, so I volunteered. They shuttle-bussed us all up to Boston, put us up in a nice hotel for the night, gave us meal vouchers, and flew us home in business class the next day. Plus the free flight voucher. Totally worth it. That one time.

I thought luggage couldn't fly on a different plane than the person that checked it?

Now Emirates does a good job if you volunteer. My family and I were flying out of Dubai and they asked us to wait 11 hours for the next flight. They put us up in a nice hotel and offered us round trip tickets back to Dubai. Our luggage was over the weight limit too and they looked the other way. Totally made it worth the inconvenience.
I have had such bad experiences flying US domestic flights, I dread it when I have to come back to the States. It's almost like they are pissed you chose their flight. Service is soooo not what it used to be.

I always pay attention to your posts, OP- I know you travel a lot and often fly. I hated it when I was constantly flying for work. I put up with it when I vacation.
My fears centre around 3 aspects- Safety, Nonsense (like overbooking and knock-on problems) and Other People (present company excepted of course- we peas are perfect travelling companions!) In that order.
My DH and I are planning some bucket list trips at the moment and I am dreading any parts by air. You knew exactly what to do in your predicament, you know the systems and had a good "catch" in Toni and you still had nonsense and a near-miss. Yikes!

How frustrating! I just flew last week (American) and there were overbooking on 3 flights around me. They were offering $500, Meal Voucher and overnight accommodations for those people to take a later flight. A gentleman standing next to me said he wouldn't take the chance on something like that, his wife said, but it would be $1,000 and an extra night stay and it would be better than being drug off the plane. True!
