Last night DH and I went out to dinner for his birthday. We went to a nice restaurant that we have been to before that is locally owned. When we sat down a male server approached us with another female server that stood by attentively. I recognized the female but couldn't place her. She kept glancing at me and I told my husband I was sure I knew her. As the meal progressed, I remembered where I knew her from. She and I worked together at Chili's when I was home for a summer from college which was decades ago. She was arrested for credit card fraud. I remember the entire staff was questioned and briefed that criminal charges would be issued if caught. After learning how she did it, I became scared to hand over my credit cards in restaurants and to this day am still nervous about it. I baby sat a manager's child and he told me that she had gone on a spending spree at Hecht's and another store. She was a very attractive girl and was known to date Capital Hockey players. A car was often sent after her shift to pick her up and take her to DC. I used to think she had this incredibly glamorous life but when I found out she was hand cuffed on site and taken to jail, that ended. I always wondered why she did it? I went back to college and spent my summers doing internships after that and adhered to the warning to check for credit card before leaving restaurant. Anyhow, it caused me to reflect on life and how I was the one sitting there with her serving me and now I had to hand my card over to her to process the charge. I was completely freaked out. I know everyone makes mistakes but I told my husband, I felt very uncomfortable.

Well, hopefully she learned her lesson first time around. Or is it possible she was cleared of the charges and never convicted? I don't see how she'd ever be able to be bonded again (are servers even bonded if they handle credit cards?) if she has a conviction for credit card fraud on her record.

I set an alert so that each time my credit card is used I get an email alert. Hopefully, she learned from her past mistake.

That would definitely make me nervous. How interesting after all these years to run into someone from the past with that baggage. Hope she has learned and changed her life.

Oh wow! Do you think she recognised you? I'm not sure that I would be able to hand my CC over to her knowing what she had done. I think I would have been tempted to say something like "Make sure you don't rip me off" (not that I actually would say anything).

I would have had a hard time handing over my CC too. I would be sure to keep an eye on the charges that show up and make sure they are not fraudulent.

I'm curious how did she commit credit card fraud?

I must be a bad person. If I recognized a server that I knew had committed credit card fraud, I would have politely asked for a new server. And if I was asked why, I would have said so.

Decades later you would still do that? Really? Forgiveness goes a long way. I never said I would not forgive the person. (not that I think she had anything to forgive the server of. I don't think she personally had had her cc frauded all those years ago.) What I'm saying is that I would not trust that server because of what I already knew of her past behavior.

I said I would only tell the employer if I was specifically asked why I was asking for another server. And the employer probably already knows about her past fraud (if she was indeed convicted of it in the past).

Well, you can call me the crazy chick who wouldn't be trusting enough to allow a server whom I know has committed credit card fraud in the past to get a hold of MY credit card now.

Hechts, sigh memories! Carry on... I thought the same thing! And then I thought..Woolworth's and Montgomery Wards. ETA: I would not have handed my card over. I would've paid cash. And if I couldn't pay cash, I would've gotten the manager. Not saying that lessons aren't learned from mistakes made, but sometimes I operate more on the "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on you" mentality. You can never trust anyone when it comes to money, unfortunately.

Yep, being in HR I've had to interview people I knew when I worked in the town where I grew up. Two people I went to high school with were working at the same place too.
One was an admin assistant and ended up having an affair with one of our married managers. It got very ugly and awkward very quick.
