I know you ladies always have the best suggestions. My husband and I will be in Portland one night in September. First, crafty spots? Place to stay? We are giving ourselves one more day after leaving the family after a weekend in Seaside. Will have a rental car.

Voodoo Donuts! You can't be a pearl clutcher though! Best donuts ever!

A no to voodoo donuts. Not worth the time. There is a better place to go.
Don't go to Elmer's or saylers.
Btw there are at three threads on Portland.

Stay at The Nines, eat at the Urban Farmer (restaurant inside The Nines). You won't regret it.
Powell' Bookstore is always fun.
Voodoo is quite overrated.

Probably five years ago, our family vacationed in Seattle & rented a car for a day trip to Portland. We toured the Japanese Gardens, enjoyed the view of the city from Pittock Mansion, listened to live music in Pioneer Square, ate lunch at Urban Farmer, shopped at Nike, snacked at Voodoo Doughnuts* & from food trucks, spent hours in Powell's Books, & checked out Providence Park (home of MLS team, Portland Timbers) & Moda Center (then Rose Garden, home of NBA team, Portland Trailblazers). HTH & you have a safe & fun trip!
*After waiting in line for almost an hour, our then elementary school aged child took one bite & hasn't eaten a doughnut since then. He didn't like the taste of the basic doughnut with frosting that he ordered, the displays (eg he didn't know what "cock & balls" meant listed on the menu, but he figured it out from the photo), & customers laughing about the names of the doughnuts...plus he was tired (& really wanted to go back to the bookstore)!

Waffle Window is always a tasty and fun breakfast. The SE Hawthorne one is the original and the one I'd pick

Portland is known for their food trucks. Downtown there is an entire block surrounded by food trucks. We had so much fun sampling and sharing our meals. I agree that there are better doughnuts than Voodoo doughnuts. There's were dry and bland. Jen

For crafty, there is Collage There are three locations; one is on NE Alberta, which is a popular area with shops and restaurants, including a branch of Salt & Straw (ice cream). Another is in Sellwood, which is popular for antiques and restaurants. Also, if you're in the mood for digging and discovery, there is SCRAP which is an arts/crafts/office "creative reuse" store--like a thrift store. I have found some great stuff there and have been known to rush right over if they post something exciting on their Instagram. If you're in a retro mood, grab a cocktail at the Driftwood Room in the Hotel DeLuxe. It's just inside the front door the hotel immediately to your left. Or have happy hour in the lobby, which is beautiful. It's an old-Hollywood themed hotel.

Go to Blue Star for good and unusual donuts. Cocos are everywhere now too, but I still prefer Blue Star. Agree that the Nines is a great place to stay. You won't starve in Portland, there are just too many good places to eat, I can't even imagine having only a day to eat in Portland! What kinds of things do you want to do in Portland? September weather could be hot or pouring rain. Are you museum people? Shoppers?

You must goes to the rose garden, and the Chinese garden above that and the zoo.
Go on the reverse order. I think parking at the zoo is still free.

Unfortunately, parking is no longer free anywhere in Washington Park; it's all metered. And a small correction--the Japanese Garden is above the Rose Garden; the Lan Su Chinese Garden is downtown. They're both worth a visit!

Also, I forgot to mention--for locally made souvenirs, often, but not always with a Portland theme (and very often with a cat theme!), there is Crafty Wonderland
It's on SW 10th downtown, right across from the main library, between Case Study Coffee and the Virginia Cafe. I always drop by after my dentist appointments, one of which I had today. I love my new raindrop necklace and Bigfoot rubber stamp

The block of food trucks is within walking distance of Powell's books (I think a little over 5 blocks.) Since parking and driving in downtown Portland is a nightmare, I suggest you park near one and walk to the other.

I much prefer the Hotel Monaco to the Nines, after staying in both. But I really loved staying at The Kennedy School with all its bars and quirky rooms to hang out in. Plus the outside dining is great.

I would definitely drive through Canon Beach on the way to Portland, and stop and see Haystack Rock. There is a cute little quilt shop on the main street if you love fabric. And beer and food.

Voodoo donuts is overrated. Skip it and go to Pine State Biscuits! Kennedy School is fun, try the tater tots.
