Lately I have a lot of friends on FB posting that they are leaving for vacation, daily updates while they are still on vacation, they are going somplace special for the day, checking in at some out of state location or something else to make it obvious they are not at home. These are intelligent adults and I just question how smart it is to announce plans like this.
Nothing is truely private on the internet, but do they need to make it so easy for criminals to get info on them. So I have a couple questions:
-Do you let other know you have big plans coming up on FB? -Do you know anyone IRL that had something happen to them maybe as a result of posting too much info on FB? (I have heard of a couple instances where people were robbed and it was because the their knew them on FB a nd knew they would be gone for a long time, but these are just stories I heard) -Would you say anything, post a reminder warning, link to a internet safety article or something like that?
TIA

I don't say hey we are leaving, but I post vacation pictures and such. We have someone that checks our house for us when we are out of town. I also have the nosy neighbor across the street and she would call the police if there was something suspicious going on.

I never post stuff like that on FB before or during. Only after. Yes I know people who had their house broken I to when they were on vacation and posting pictures etc. Had to be someone the knew, the thief took some very specific items while making little mess. The police felt it was very targeted.
It kind if freaks me out though because what if I get a thief with poor reading comprehension who thinks I'm on vacation the week I'm home and posted all my photos.

We just took a 10 day trip and didn't post pics til we got home even though we had a dog/housesitter. I agree it's not smart to announce you are gone, especially for long periods.

Not posting anything until after the fact. That's us as well - happy to tell people when we get back! I'm not the type of FB user who posts up every sneeze of the day anyway so it's not hard! I also don't personally know anyone who has been burgled as a direct result of posting on FB, although there was a case a few years back where a taxi driver would take people to the airport and then go straight back round to their house and break in. For some reason, that's always been more of a concern to me!

I do it a lot. But we have a friend come stay at our house with our dog and I also make a point to say that at some point.

We always post something like, "So thankful for X our house sitter, so we can be away and play and not worry about the house and the pets!" And it's the truth. My DH posts a zillion photos from vacations, so I always make sure to post about the house sitter.

My mum & dad live with us & we never holiday together so it doesn't bother me to post current photos of us out & about or on holiday. I can see why it isn't always a great plan though.

Since my son left our garage door wide open to the world last night, I have bigger issues than telling people on FB when we're going on vacation.
It just doesn't bother me. I like reading about people's adventures. If one of my FB friends is going to come here and try to rob us when we're away, they are going to be sorely disappointed with what's available to take!

I post about vacations on Facebook before and during the trip. I don't worry about it too much. I'm only friends with people I know, a lot of them are from my hometown which is over 400 miles away. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't make a trip to break into my house.
My next door neighbor is a busy body and if she saw anything suspicious she'd call.

I occasionally will post a picture while we're on vacation. Mostly I just wait until we get home to post anything about it.

I'm in the school of "Don't invite trouble!" So no, I don't post while I"m on vacation. Not that I ever seem to be on vacation these days, but hey...

I have no problem with posting it on Facebook. I have only three Facebook friends that live within 500 miles of my house and two of them own our house.
When we do leave our home it is to drive "home" (which is almost 1000 miles away) and either DH or I will post when we stop for gas so that our family can see where we are and our ETA.
*shrug* I worry about a lot of stuff, but this is not one of them.

I never post anything until we are back from our trip. As others have mentioned above it would most likely be someone you know that would break in. A friend had her own nephew with a drug problem break in their home while they were gone.

We were friends on MFP and I hadn't seen you post in awhile so it's nice to see that you're maintaining! Wish I could say the same ...! I'm so proud of you!! #2 I figure my family and friends already know we are going out of town. If one of them want to break into my house, well, not much I can do about that.

If you only have fb friends who are family and irl friends, then why would you worry about your fb friends knowing? I'm more worried about random people driving by and breaking in, not real life friends.

I've made it a point to not be friends with anyone on Facebook who I wouldn't feel comfortable having them know I was away from home, so I feel fine with sharing that information.

I wouldn't do that. I'm even paranoid about people we know. I don't like telling people that we're going to be gone until we're back. And that's even with an alarm system, people checking on the house, picking up mail, etc, and a nosey neighbor. Our house was broken into a few years ago, and I always felt that it was connected to someone very close. It happened while DH was out at lunch. He was only gone an hour, and it looked like something tipped them off that he was returning, because they just dropped things and were gone.

Only if my husband is staying home. Then I will and I will post pictures while I'm gone. If we are all gone, than no.

People would have to go to a lot of trouble to find my address after reading a FB post. Most of my FB friends AND family don't even know it.
