A friend of mine just purchased a Cricut Air and was wondering if the annual membership is needed/worth it. Your thoughts and opinions?
I have a Cricut Expression so I'm no help!
Thank you!

I'm not a subscriber, since I have so many cartridges and free files to work with. I would say that it depends on how much she has already and how much she thinks she will use the membership.

Thank you! She is new to "Cricutting" so she doesn't have anything yet. I suggested that she purchase a couple of cartridges and play with those first before committing, but thought I'd check with the all-knowing peas!

She can use Design Space to look at designs and decide if she wants to buy any of them or get a subscription. She could get a one month subscription and see how she likes it, but licensed designs are not included in the subscription. A sub is less expensive if a person subscribes for a year, but a person can also just try it for a month for $10 and cut tons of designs during that month. However, once the month is up, there will no longer be access to cutting those designs unless the subscription is continued, or the designs are purchased.
The disadvantage to just buying a cartridge is that there are usually designs that you like, and some you don't. You are buying even the ones you will never use.

If she doesn't own any cartridges I would have her try the one month subscription.
I have found there are few cartridges that I have used most of the images on to really get my money's worth. I started with the Cricut in 2007 and just upgraded to an Explore a few months ago. So I accumulated close to 50 cartridges over the years. But if I was starting now I wouldn't have bought some of the cartridges I own because I have only used 1 or 2 cuts from them.

I started with the personal and upgraded to the Explore Air. I purchase cartridges and I love them. I buy them on sale when Cricut has thier big sale or new on eBay by Auction directly from Provo Craft Inc. I've snagged a few cartridges under $7 on auction. The most I paid for a cartridge on eBay is $14.10, but that is for a Disney Princess cartridge with Tiana.
I bring this up, because at $.99 an image, $1.99 for some licensed images like Disney & Marvel, and $4.99 for a font, cost benefit wise a cartridge with 2-4 fonts and several images I really want, works out.
The great thing is when you purchase a new Explore, they usually give you 7 days free Access.
Because I had the personal, the gypsy, and craftroom I have tons of free images I can use. That hasn't stopped me from buying cartridges, even though I can upload royalty free images and SVG files I create or purchase I still love the work Cricut puts into thier images to make them great cut files.
If she doesn't have any cartridges I recommend, she play around in DS and see what she likes. She can wait for the sales to purchase a cratridge and Cricut has a free cartridge each week to allow you to cut images you don't own. She can also purchase images in DS or upload images to cut.
