My great-uncle Walter died today, he was 96 years old and the last long hold-out from my grandparents' generation. My grandma, who was his little sister, died 8 years ago and the two of them were the last of their siblings. All my other grandparents and their siblings were gone by 2010. So Walter was the last one. I'm not sad for him because he was very old and had cancer and dementia, and he believed in Heaven so I'm sure he's there. I'm sad for his kids and grandkids and great-grandkids, for sure.
He and Grandma were very close, so I think it's stirring up some of the grief of losing her, and also just that sad feeling of how fast time goes by and how fast families and generations come and go. I have been interested in genealogy for years, encouraged by Grandma who was passionate about it, and it seems strange that she and her family are all gone now. I don't have any deep thoughts here, I was just taken aback by how emotional I've been since Walter's daughter posted on FB that he had passed.
I'm waiting to hear when and where the memorial service will be...I'm expecting it will be in Missouri since that's where Aunt Lois was buried. I'm thinking I may be making a trip up to Ohio to take my mom and dad out to the service. Uncle Walter was like a second dad to my dad, and my dad isn't in a good condition to drive himself out there after battling brain cancer for more than two years.

I am so sorry for your loss, and for your father's loss. It's awfully nice of you to take your parents to the funeral in a far-away state. Nice you!

I am sorry for your loss!
It's a weird feeling to realize the last of a generation has passed. My g-ma was the baby in her family. She and her eldest brother outlived all of that generation (g-ma & g-pa's families). She was the last one.
My cousin posted an obit of her grandfather last week. I had never seen it. He was my grandmother's favorite of her siblings. Anyway, it was so sad seeing the names of the survivors and realizing all but 1 is deceased now.
I guess that was a long winded way of saying I understand where you are coming from.
Safe travels.

I'm so sorry. I know exactly what you mean about the end of an era. A few years back I had 2 great-uncles left on my dad's side...both brothers of my grandmother. And then with just a few months we lost both of them, and it wasn't until it happened that we realized that there was no one left of that generation, which gave us a bit of a jolt when we realized it. Many good thoughts for you and your family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I completely understand how the loss of one family member makes you think about the previous loss of another. Be kind to yourself!

aww honey, I'm sorry. Glad he got to live a long and mostly good life, though. Nice of you to think of your parents, too. They'll appreciate the trip.

It's so difficult to see that older family generation go. I have one great aunt left. My grandparents and great aunts & uncles defined my sense of family as I was growing up and now they are gone. I'm not close at all with the cousins and extended family my age, so once my great aunt is gone I'll doubt we'll stay in touch.
I hope it works out for you to go to the service with your parents.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know exactly what you mean in talking about the end of an era. We just lost the last of my FIL's generation. FIL died 20 years ago and two of his cousins (brothers) were very much father figures to my DH and embraced out family when we moved to Seattle many years ago.
