I don't shop as much now that we have a Michaels and a Hobby Lobby here in town...I don't need to buy for just-in-case or stock up as much...if I need it, I can stop in and buy it. They are both convenient to where I grocery shop and it's easy to run in for one or two things when we're out shopping on a Friday evening anyway.
I do better with less choices - too much stuff overwhelms me.
I'm happiest buying for specific photos...when I first started scrapbooking, I would take my pictures to the store after developing them (yes, back in the film days) and pick up paper and stickers. I scrap starting with the pictures so buying pretty paper and embellishments or collection kits...means that they sit there looking pretty until/unless the right pictures come along. I know some of you can start with the paper or kit and then find the pictures or make pictures work (turn b/w etc...) but my brain doesn't work like that.
So I'm done buying stuff randomly. I have enough...probably more than enough...
I have enough cardstock in all the colours - IF I run out of a colour, then I'll buy more, IF I need a shade I don't have, then I'll buy for that layout
I have enough patterned paper - IF I don't have anything that works, then I'll buy for that layout. If I run out of patterned paper in a particular colour (or theme - like Christmas), then I'll buy more. If I DO buy something (a paper pack, a stack, a collection kit) - then I need to have specific photos in mind for it...photos that will be scrapped SOON
Embellishments - I need to remember that I use only a few embellishments on a layout and I don't need ALL of the embellishments....especially since I won't use most of them, lol.

Linda Saying things like that will get you kicked off this board! Just kidding, I know what you mean. I'm much more selective in my shopping these days. Instead of buying a whole collection, I'm more likely to purchase just a few papers.

Linda I think that is everyone's underlying mantra, but for many of us the voice chanting that mantra is drowned out by "Ooooh, pretty!"

I have become a lot more selective in my purchases (not that you can tell from looking at my hoard scraproom!)

I have really been trying to convince myself of this lately! I also get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I have, especially paper (it's always the paper!).

Everyone has their own style and way of thinking. I am glad you have found a balance that works for you, linda. For myself, I like options, right up until the last little doodad is placed on the page. And since I live 70 miles from the nearest craft store, I feel the need to have those options at my finger tips, here in my craft room. I keep a supply of most of the basic colours and the themes i scrap most often. If I know I will be attending an event, or I have just printed a batch of pics that veer away from those themes, I shop specifically for that event or those photos. But mostly I buy supplies "just in case". And that makes me happy.

I live far from the LSS (it takes an hour to get there). I don't go to Michaels very often if ever. I used to have my 40% coupon every weekend and now there's nothing I want nor need there any longer. I don't like their paper, I don't need any more altered art supplies and I am good for adhesive. I have probably 100 rolls of washi that I like and enough dies and stamps to last me until eternity.
If I did have extra money I would get some different mediums from Scrapbook.com. I saw a very cool demo on Facebook with Faber Castell showing gel medium, glass bead medium, different pastes and things. It was all very cool so I would get some of them. Will I is another story. I have to put them somewhere and that's a problem. But I still might!

grammadee - when I had to travel 90+ min. to buy scrap supplies (even adhesive), I felt the need to stay stocked up just in case also. It's SO different with stores locally - even big box ones.

Linda - I am with you! I have been scrapping since 1998 and the amount of supplies I have is more than enough to scrap the rest of my life probably! So I am definitely more selective than I was in the beginning or back in the days where there was so much product available and so many more companies. I don't buy just to buy but more to supplement.
That said, I do like to have new product every once in awhile to fulfill that shopping need, but I definitely make sure it's things that fit my style!

i finally hit the limit with my SB supplies. so much so that i haven't been to a Michaels or Joanns since April. that may not be a big deal to most people but i went into one or both of those stores at least once a week, if not more. nearly 3 months is huge for me. and i'm kind of sad to say that i haven't missed it. i have enough stash to keep me amused for centuries.

But drop me in an independent LSS and I can drop a hundred bucks almost without even thinking. Even so, I'm a lot pickier now than I used to be and I have to have something specific in mind in order to buy.

If I haven't got something I make it. Unfortunately this often adds time to whatever I'm doing because I head off down the designing rabbit hole, and being perfectionist I often ditch stuff that doesn't turn out just right.
The only thing I am short of is cardstock. Well, not short so much as limited; I have white for printing, black and kraft. I also considered enamel dots, then last week for a Father's Day card I made an great digital dot, looks fabulous printed and I thought, with a bit of glossy accents who needs enamel dots?
My husband treated me to a little stack of coloured plastic boxes and I think I could print sheets of dots to cut out with the Silhouette and do all manner of colours... in practice it might not work like that because if they're too small they may not cut bit I might see what happens. Or I'll just make sure they're printed where I need them so I can add the shadow.
I have long been envious of white text on black or coloured card, but you couldn't let me loose with embossing powder and a hot tool! So, my next idea? Cut stencils of fonts I like and use a white gel pen! I'll be trying that out later this week.

It actually makes me a little sick to my stomach when I think about the stash I do have and how there is no way on earth to use it all. Combine that with the fact that I really dislike clutter means I am really selective about what comes into my scrapbook space.

These stores tell me that "corporate" (what does that even mean to someone like me??) decides which products to stock. I wish someone would show them all these wonderful products I don't have a mom&pop shop. I don't like having to buy online and wonder if I'll get the item in perfect condition or if I'll even get it. Not good for my nerves...

I like options, especially living away from town and only being limited to Js or Ms. Although most recently collections or kit club kits have been working the best for me.

I've had similar realisations over the last few months. I've definitely brought more into my stash over the last two years that I've used and I've noticed how it's impacted my creating. I definitely do better with fewer choices than I currently have. I've found that working from kits has really helped my productivity by limiting my choices - ironically the main reason I had avoided all forms of kit clubs in the past because I liked being able to work from my whole stash.
I'm trying to be better going forward on my purchasing to get that shopping vs creating balance back where it needs to be.

Everyone has to find what works for them. I go through spells where I don't buy anything for months and then I have times that I feel like I'm buying everything in sight. I think you do become more discriminating with what you buy once you have been scrapping for a while. I know what types of things work for me and that I like to use. I don't buy just because it's cute anymore. I like having a larger stash to pull from because I don't have any scrap stores within a reasonable driving distance. I purchase practically everything on-line. I also don't scrap chronologically so I never know what I will be working on next.

I've had missing items which was a huge disappointment for my first experience at this one website (especially now that I know a lot of people vouched for that site). Thanks for these suggestions! I've never been to these sites but I'm looking forward to "window shopping"
