Subarus are great which is why it's hard to find a used one. I had a guy who tracked me down in a parking lot and wanted to buy mine.

Well, I would say Subaru. With that said, I just found out that my beloved 2009 forester is starting to leak around the head gaskets. Right now they are just recommending monitoring, but a $2800 repair is in my future. Now I'm not sure what to do. Keep it and suck up the repair in the next 6-12 months? Get rid of it? I'm stressing.

We had a 2007 Acura TSX and it was great. We had about 180,000 miles on it when we traded it in and had never done anything beyond routine scheduled services.

Our Honda had 140,000 on when traded it in. It gave us no real issues other than typical wear and tear things. We are a one car only family and really thought it was just time to get something new.

Our 2002 sante fe lasted almost 230,000 miles before we decided it wasn't worth fixing.

Just got a quote to trade in our 2004 Acura MDX with 180,000 miles on it. It's in pretty good condition and because they only offered us $4000 for it, we decided to keep it for the kids.
My point being if you have a good mechanic you trust, you may be able to get one without going through a dealer.

Gotta agree with this. I have an 18 year old Honda Civic LX with just over 100K miles on it that I bought brand new. I don't drive much but it's never given us any problems. My whole family used to drive Hondas (my Mom has moved on to a Prius and my father just bought a Ford-the one that's entirely electrical). DH and DS both drive Toyata Camerys. My sister drove a Honda Civic until it hit close to 250K! I love my Honda and will keep driving it. I don't want a new car. We paid for DS's used cars (first one was a Honda Civic but that one got totaled-no fault of his, current one is a Camry) both had a lot of miles. We had a mechanic check out each one before we bought it to check for any problems.

IMO it has far more to do with how a car is cared for and the fact that there are simply some cars that are lemons. We have had a VW Jetta, VW Bug, two Volvo S60s, Chevy Tahoe and a Jeep Wrangler and all of them have had at least 180K on them when we got rid of them and the Volvo had more than 200K. I think each of the VWs had one major repair that was around $1500. Nothing more than maintenance for the rest. DH takes excellent care of our vehicles though.

I have a Honda CRV with almost 118,000 miles on it. I do regular maintenance, only a couple times (outside of tires) have I spent more than $500 on repairs.

My daughter is driving my old 2004 Honda Pilot. It has about 120K miles on it and still running great. I don't think you can go wrong with a Honda.

Toyotas hold their resale value, so that should say something.

I have had two Hondas that I drove for well over 100k. My current Honda (an Odyssey van, so not a model that would be of interest to a young person) is at something like 165k and it is still going strong.

I have a Honda CRV with 197,000 miles on it. If you are looking at a Honda with high mileage, you have to ask whether the timing belt has been replaced. Timing belts cost about $900. with labor. My daughter just bought another Honda CRV after looking at many used cars.
We've also had good luck (275,000 and 185,000) with PT Cruisers, but that is hit-or-miss.
Best of luck to you.

Only routine maintenance needed on my 2005 Honda Pilot thus far; it has 145,000 miles on it. KBB value is $2,800-3,300.
I only buy Honda.

Our 2011 Subaru Legacy has over 100k miles. Runs like a champ, only routine maintenance. But like someone said, finding any Subaru in that price range is difficult. they go fast!

My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer had about 140,000 miles on it when I sold it last year, and it's still going strong with its new owner.

DH gave his cousin a 1997 Toyota Corolla that had over 100K miles around 5 years ago. I don't know the current mileage but the car is going strong enough that DH's aunt (cousin's mom) took it for herself.
