DD's boyfriend is looking for his first car. He has about $5000 to spend, parents cannot help him out.
Do you have a good reliable car with over 100,000+ miles on it and not a money pit?
Please let me know the what make and year it is and any other info
He is checking out Subarus ( I think all of the millenials like those); I was more thinking like a Civic, Accord, Camry--but not sure if they would even be in his price range.
Hopefully he can get someone to check it out mechanically before he buys it.
Thanks!

Subarus are great cars. My son's 03 Forester has 180k.
My 00 Honda CiVic has 114 k
Our 06 Odyssey has 174k
All are running like tops, so I can recommend all.
The best way to get a good car is to put out feelers and let people know.

My 2003 Honda Pilot has over 150,000 and we've hardly put anything new into it.

I'm pretty sure an Accord or Camry in his price range is going to be closer to 200,000 miles versus 100,000. Everyone I know with a Subaru likes them - I think their reliability is good.

He definitely needs to take it in to get it looked at. He doesn't have anyone to bail him out if he gets swindled. It's not much money to have a mechanic give it a look over.

My 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe has 140k on it, and it's been a terrific car.
(Though this is the second time I've made that statement today and I'm now worried I'm jinxing myself)

Ds just bought a new car, initially he was looking for a Subaru in that price range. The problem he found was so was everyone else. They sold so quickly he couldn't get one. They are certainly sought after used cars.

I have a 2012 Kia Soul with 105,000 miles on it. Never had any issues.
(My next car is likely to be a Subaru Forester, mainly because AWD is standard and I think it should be on ALL cars!)

Accords and Civics get stolen like crazy here where I live, so I wouldn't buy one of those just because of that. Subarus are great but like others have said, hard to get hands on one. My DS drives a 1500 Chevy truck single cab and has about 200k miles on it. The money we have put into it has mainly been my DS's fault (he had a minor accident).

Where do you live? Here in wa st, used car prices are outrageous. Back east he can buy a a lower mileage car for a really good price.

I have an Eddie Bauer XLT Ford Expedition with almost 200,000 miles on it. We go on LOTS of road trips.
The only thing we have had to have worked on is the A/C (knock on something).

we recently traded in our 2005 Town and Country mini-van with just under 200K miles.
We got DD a 2001 Ford Ranger that was about his price range last summer - DS bought a 1978 Ford F-150 a few years ago with low miles (42k original) for about $2500 but ended up replacing the engine a year later....still even with the new engine, that was still about $5k total. The nice thing about it is that it's all mechanical so he could do a lot of work on it himself (although not the engine)

We have a 2006 Honda Accord with about 160,000 miles on it - have not had to make any repairs.
We also have a 1998 Honda Accord with about 260,000 miles on it - we have had to make a few fairly inexpensive repairs in the last couple of years.

I have a 2003 Madza 3 with 205,000 miles on it. The last thing we replaced were the brakes and ball bearings. The only foreseeable fix on it right now is the A/C. It doesn't seem to want to work on certain settings so it's possible it needs to be recharged.
Our '08 Toyota Rav4 has 106,000 miles on it. We had to replace the sway bars recently but that was because I broke one of them. It's due for some regular maintenance soon but no major problems.
A friend of mine also had a Madza 3 and he had over 200,000 miles on it with no problems.

Our mechanic recently bought 2 of the 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sports just like mine. He says that was a great year and the engines go on forever.

(Though this is the second time I've made that statement today and I'm now worried I'm jinxing myself) This I bought my current Santa Fe after driving my brother's older one that rode beautifully. He has done regular maintenance to it and nothing else.

I had 145000 miles on my 2007 Camry when it was totaled in an accident...not my fault. I only did oil changes, new brakes, wipers and tires---the basics. Never had any issues with it- so I purchased another Camry. Low maintenance, dependable-what I want in a car.

2008 Honda CR-V 150,000 miles on it. My husband drives it from Dallas to Houston all the time. We are about to replace the shocks and struts on it...but we have had no other issues with it.

We have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner with 279,000 miles that I would drive out of town today. We drove it from SC to NJ when it had 225,000 mile and didn't even think twice. The only reason we bought something newer wa because I needed more seats to haul kids around. So we have a 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan.
I hate to sell that car, it's been a good one. But it's just sitting around and I hate paying insurance and taxes on something we don't use.

2003 Subaru Baja with just under 200K. When debating between getting new vehicle and driving this one into the ground my mechanic(s) told me I probably had 100K to go.
Bajas are not easy to find but it's basically an Outback with pick-up back end. And most other models are known to go "forever". And you get AWD to boot if your in area/weather that is desirable.

I'm on my 2nd Hyundai Elantra-they have terrible resale value, but that also means you can get used ones pretty inexpensively, lol super reliable car that just needed the typical maintenance stuff (oil changes, tires, brakes, etc) when we finally retired my 1st one, it had 250,000 miles on it. the one I have now is pretty new, so only has 50,000 miles on it. Any other owners I run into always talk about how reliable it is. Toyota quality, but Hyundai price-IMO. I love toyotas as well, but you also pay more for them, generally speaking

I just traded in my 15 year old Chevy Blazer - it had $169K miles on it and was still very reliable. I traded it because I felt like it was time - I was religious about getting it serviced every 3 months, getting the tires rotated every 6 months and such and never had any trouble out of it. On the last check up, I was told that I was going to need a new a/c compressor (or something like that) soon and it was going to need a new catalytic converter soon and I just didn't want to put that much money into a car that old so I decided it was time to trade. I did think about it a lot and almost decided to go ahead with the suggested repairs - probably would have gotten another 2 years at least but my heart told me it was time.
It was a very good car - never had a days problem with it!

if i had to get a reliable car with over 100K miles, i'd probably lean towards a Honda or Toyota.
