So when is the right time to talk about gun violence? Today it was the GOP and tomorrow it might be a playground. When is congress going to finally get behind some F-ing common sense gun control?

I think mental health really needs to be addressed in this country. No stable person would do a mass shooting. Maybe we should all be required to do yearly mental checkups because people can change depending on what is going on in their personal lives. Terrible tragedy. Absolutely. There is also irony that the mental health coverage that the ACA mandated for the first time, will be completely stripped away in the Republican version.

Sickening. I'm sorry, i t's hard to comprehend when something like this happens on your neighborhood. I listened to a radio interview with a woman on daily walk with her dogs. Praying for all involved. If we should have learned one thing by now about America's gun fetishism it's that gun terror can happen in ALL neighborhoods. It's high time we got this through our skulls. I know some people can't empathize w/tragedy until/unless it happens to them personally, but that's a big part of the problem. Does it have to affect us personally before we act to help others? Oh geez. That is not what I said. Apparently you've never had one of the national tragedies happen in your neighborhood or you'd know it's extra shocking. Take a deep breath and have compassion for one our own RefuPeas here. Some of us can do that and still be aware of a larger picture and ongoing issue.

Just that a lot of people say the bolded part and it's a big part of our country's problem. The inability to empathize until something affects "our neighborhood". Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I'm glad no one was killed. My thoughts are with those injured and their families.
I doubt this will change anything.
Our national obsession with guns and gun ownership is sick.

Trump is giving statement now. Clearly reading prepared statement from prompter, which in this case I believe is a good plan.

while I'm glad that everyone is going to be okay (at least that's how it sounds so far), I hope no one flames me for saying that if the shooter is dead, my first thought was that's too bad- both because they won't necessarily be able to figure out his motive- and that he won't be brought to justice for his crimes.

The amount of money it takes to prosecute an asshole like this is astronomical and never guaranteed. (From someone who is bitter about the cost and outcome of the aurora shooting)

I don't want to hear statements from lunatics. I don't want them to have their insane "motives" shared around the world and inspire others.
I'm glad he's dead.

oh, I didn't want to hear him say it, or give him any airtime. I wanted him to tell them during questioning, so we would know. To allay the whole 'was it because they were Republicans or was he mentally ill and/or disturbed' question.

Yeah, but the reality of our world would mean his comments would be shared worldwide in moments.

It is horrible that this happened. Call me a horrible person if you want, but I also wondered if it would change any of their minds about gun laws now that something like this happened to them.

Imagine a different outcome had the police had more options at their disposal on March 24 when the shooter was "cautioned" for shooting randomly into the trees in a populated area. link

Technically it did already happen to "them" when Gabrielle Gifford was shot. That's probably why Scalise had so much security around him to begin with because he knew in his role he was a target.

No one is offended when talk of fire safety/laws/etc. are discussed after a tragic fire. (Thinking of London at the moment and the lack of politicizing after that event.)
Why do people get all bent out of shape when there's talk of gun safety/laws/etc. after a shooting?
Are guns so sacrosanct here that we can't discuss them during "vulnerable" moments or something?
Of *course* people are going to associate gun laws (the ability to access guns) with a shooting and fire codes with a fire.

I'm the one that was quoted in the original post that anonrefugee was responding to. I am well familiar with gun violence living in a gentrifying neighborhood in downtown DC. We routinely hear gunshots around our apartment and have had to "hit the deck" more than once. The scary thing to me was that I know this neighborhood in Alexandria well because I hit this Target on my suburban shopping runs. It's a quiet neighborhood and definitely not something you think would happen here. I guess the bottom line is that tragedies can happen anywhere and in any town SaveSave

Shooter appears to have a 2006 arrest for domestic violence. And sadly that won't matter in the discussion of gun control. It's way too easy for anyone to get a gun.

He evidently was found with a shotgun during that incident. As you will probably see widely reported, domestic violence is a pretty good predictor of violence more broadly.
I read a piece on WaPo today that suggested that this particular gentleman was probably homeless and/or mentally ill -- the former mayor of Alexandria evidently would run into him at the Y when he would go for his workouts, and reports that the shooter appeared to be living out of his gym bag.

While not condoning the actions of the shooter, the first thing that went through my mind was to wonder about his position on gun control. Events like these are what has me in favor of background checks and control in general. And I am angry that the same people are that are so pro-life have no problem legalizing the sale of silencers, letting the mentally ill have access and letting the NRA make gun policies in this country. As if guns were not lethal. This time it happened to a a congressman but it could happen to anyone. Do I hold him a little responsible for these types of situations? You bet. Do I feel ashamed admitting it or discussing it just at this moment? No.

The thing about gun control laws is the people who will follow the laws aren't the ones who would be intending harm by acquiring one.
The managers of both teams are giving a joint press conference. It's refreshing.

It's refreshing. By this logic nothing should be illegal and we shouldn't try to control anyone's behavior by having laws. Why have laws regulating drugs or gang activity or theft. By this logic, the people who want to partake of any of these activities will do them whether they are legal or not.

I support them. But I don't think they're going to do much to bring crime rates down. I didn't express my thought very well.
