I know. Every time there is a shooting incident, it's always "not the right time" to talk about our gun fetishism in the US.

Did this guy lawfully own a gun? Yes. CNN is reporting that he was a licensed gun owner.

Did this guy lawfully own a gun? Yes. In the WaPo story I linked upthread, when the police responded to a call where he was shooting randomly into the trees in a populated area in his home state of Illinois in March, he had a gun permit.

The thing about gun control laws is the people who will follow the laws aren't the ones who would be intending harm by acquiring one. The managers of both teams are giving a joint press conference. It's refreshing. By this logic nothing should be illegal and we shouldn't try to control anyone's behavior by having laws. Why have laws regulating drugs or gang activity or theft. By this logic, the people who want to partake of any of these activities will do them whether they are legal or not. CNN & other sources now reporting that he was a licensed gun owner.

Because there is no law that requires someone's gun to be taken away after an incident like that, in large part because the NRA lobbies against any such law being put in place.

Depends on the law where he was shooting. It would be illegal for me to do target practice in my backyard.

"Travis Air Force Base is currently responding to a real world security incident. More details will be released as they become available. The public is being asked to stay away from the base to ensure emergency responders can respond accordingly." RUMOR on their FB page is that there's an active shooter at the BX. People being told to shelter in place. I could just cry about all the evil in this world. What the heck is this world coming to?

It is horrible that this happened. Call me a horrible person if you want, but I also wondered if it would change any of their minds about gun laws now that something like this happened to them. Technically it did already happen to "them" when Gabrielle Gifford was shot. That's probably why Scalise had so much security around him to begin with because he knew in his role he was a target. On the news this morning one of the other representatives said that had Scalise not been there, there would not have been any security at all. The security was only there because Scalise was majority whip. I don't know if he was specifically targeted, but it sounded pretty random as to who was shot.

I have seen people selling guns (legally) in Facebook sales groups. I assumed that there was no background checks going on there.

I didn't think you could do it on fb though.

n the news this morning one of the other representatives said that had Scalise not been there, there would not have been any security at all. The security was only there because Scalise was majority whip. perhaps it would be prudent to have security for any Congresspeople if there are a large-ish group (I have no idea what number of them that would be) all in one area...?? They are public figures, after all, and no matter who they are or what their stance on issues is, there are people out there who don't like the government. And like the morning DJ I listen to says, 'you can't stop crazy' from happening.

N R A Huge majorities of NRA members support sensible policies that the group opposes. 82% of the general public, and 74% of NRA members, support requiring a criminal background check of anyone purchasing a gun. NRA leaders strongly oppose requiring background checks for gun sales. Why? Because gun owners think the NRA is primarily a gun owner's lobby. It is a gun MANUFACTURERS lobby first and foremost and they will oppose legislation that limits gun sales.

It's also being reported the shooter had some domestic violence in his history. I have no information if it would have/ should have disqualified him from gun ownership, but I wish it would have.

We did jack shit as a country when 6 year ild kids were shot in their own classroom.
We did jack shit as a country when Gabriel Giffords was shot.
We will do jack shit now.
NRA wins. Again and again and again.

If you can't even get people to act after little children are killed, then Congress will never stand up to gun manufacturers.

Alex Jones got on his show and called the savage bullet-ripping into bodies of 6 year olds a "false flag" operation to take away our assault weapons. And many others got on social media screaming "it wasn't the time" to discuss gun violence.

Horrible. In so many ways. And we don't yet know about the shooter. But I can't imagine he is someone who should have had access to a high-powered weapon in a civilized society. Scalise voted to repeal SSA limits on gun ownership. projects.propublica.org/represent/votes/115/house/1/77House Vote 77 - Repeals Rule Restricting Gun Sales to Severely Mentally Ill
Bill: H.J.RES.40 - Providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the ru... Description: Providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Social Security Administration relating to Implementation of the NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007 Result: Passed by a margin of 27 votes (208 required) Date: February 2, 2017 at 4:07 p.m. (vote source) The rule in question does not, in fact, "keep guns from the mentally ill," and repealing it will not allow the mentally ill access to firearms. As a Pea said a while back: Not being able to handle your finances is not a measure of whether you should be allowed to protect yourself or not. They are very different determinations. INDIVIDUALS should be determined to be a risk to themselves and others, not a blanket determination by the Social Security Administration, which does not allow due process.

I think this is the same thing people ask about our immigration laws and sanctuary cities. Or even jaywalking. Some laws we want followed, some laws we punish for and some laws are merely suggestions at times.

1. If being slightly attached to a couple of local campaigns makes you a Democratic strategist, then I'm one, too. He's a loony with zero connection to state or national politics. 2. Don't worry; the Republicans on Twitter have been happy to return the favor with the #huntdemocrats tag. Some have gone so far as to suggest that we'll be easy targets since we don't like guns, and they have all the guns.
