I must be weird. I like quinoa and I like kale. Just had quinoa salad tonight. It has to have lots of vegetables in it (cucumbers, tomatoes, chick peas), some fresh herbs like mint & oregano, and a good vinaigrette. With kale, I like to prep it a day ahead of time, de-stem it, massage a good vinaigrette into it and let it sit overnight. Then, before serving, I add craisins, slivered almonds, feta cheese, etc. Mmm, good stuff. My father-in-law was just saying that when he managed a Shoney's, they used a ton of kale as decoration around the salad bar. He thinks it's funny that these days, it's hailed as a "superfood". LOL

Oh, girls, girls! Blasphemy here! I LOVE, love love quinoa. Not by itself--who eats it that way? But there so many fabulous salads made with quinoa. We were in Bar Harbor a couple weeks ago and stopped in at this wonderful little cafe and she had a quinoa salad that was so good I went back two days in a row just to have it. You just have to know what to do with it. And it is a superfood that is simply wonderful for you.

I hate the texture, it is vile! I do not like the flavor, either. Quinoa is nasty, vile stuff, IMO!

I have issues with texture. There are foods I want to like because friends and family like them and I just can't get into them. Mushrooms being high on the list. I would love to love mushrooms like some people do. They just make me want to throw up. Texture is very high on the list! I like quinoa and kale, but I'm with you on the texture of cooked mushrooms. I think it's the sliminess of them. I do eat them, but I have to have something else to mix them with. I like the taste - I'll happily eat them raw, and I love mushroom soup.

I feel the same way about quinoa.
I know it was all the rage awhile ago, but I can't get past the texture.

Sorry, but I love quinoa. I get it though, bil thinks it's vile due to texture and ds is not crazy about the flavor. My favorite way to fix it was almost like a risotto as far as technique then adding a bit of gruyere for flavor and mushrooms. But I also serve it plain just cooked with white wine and broth for the flavor boost.
Unfortunately dd has been off dairy for a couple of years and off grains except oats for the last couple of months. So no quinoa for us😭.

I like kale. I really like the kale salad from Costco. And I like kale in soups and smoothies. I'm torn about kale too, but I'll agree that the kale salad with poppyseed dressing from Costco is AWESOME! Really awesome. Quinoa is good when it's got stuff in it....veggies, beans, and good flavors.

I am not a lover of potato chips of any kind, baked or however they are prepared, so I will join you there, but I am sorry you don't like quinoa. I love it. I have been having a quinoa power salad delivered from the Veggie Grill restaurant and it is delicious. Look at this salad. How can you not find this mouthwatering?

Try it in soup. I make a chicken noodle soup that replaces the noodle with quinoa and it's pretty good.

I've had it once, not opposed to trying it again. Apparently my mistake was eating it alone and I'm positive I did not prepare it correctly. It was super crunchy and odd. Please note, the instructions for the recipes need to be like I'm in a 7th grade home ec. class. I don't know what this talk is about baked chips, but I'll try anything once.

I like quinoa and i actually love baked lays potato chips.
I hate kale. It's so bitter i can't stand it. And the past few years it has been a huge thing. You can't buy a good bowl of soup without someone sticking some kale up in there. Ugh. Hopefully this trend will end soon.

I should have added this to my post. I made a quinoa salad a few years ago and shared some of it with my next door neighbor. He LOVED it. He asked for the recipe. I told him there was no actual recipe, you just compile the stuff you like, add the quinoa, which I always made the day before to let it sit overnight in the refrigerator, and use whatever dressing appeals to you. He said he wanted exactly what I had done, so I wrote what I could remember putting in the salad and that I had made up a simple lemon juice dressing.
About a week later he came over a little pissy and said he made the salad and served it to friends and it was horrible. He though that I might have "accidentally" left out either a critical step or an ingredient. I don't do that kind of thing, and he knows that about me. I hate games like that. He said it was really bitter to the point they didn't eat it. I asked what dressing he used and he said instead of making the lemon one I gave him, he used some Italian dressing that was in their refrigerator. He went and got it and tasted it to see if it was the dressing that had gone bad. It wasn't.
I asked him if he rinsed the quinoa really well before he cooked it. Deer in headlights look on his face. I know I told him at least twice and even offered to lend him my tight meshed sieve that I bought specifically for quinoa because none of my others were suitable. He forgot that step. Quinoa is coated with a bitter saponin that is supposed to be pretty much rinsed off by the time it gets to the consumer, but I have always rinsed mine really really well just in case. I don't want to ruin all those healthy ingredients because I was too lazy to rinse the seeds. He won't forget next time. And the next time I made a quinoa salad, I doubled it and took him the other half.
So is it possible that those of you who tried it and hated it found it to be bitter, which could mean it wasn't rinsed?

refugee pea:
I don't know if you live in an area that has Publix grocery stores, but this recipe is from the back of the package of their Greenwise Organic Tri-Color Quinoa.
GREEK QUINOA SALAD
Ingredients:
2 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped 1/2 seedless cucumber, coarsely chopped 3 T. fresh mint, finely chopped 1 T. fresh oregano, finely chopped 1 shallot, finely chopped 1/3 cup olive oil 2 T. red wine vinegar 1/4 t. kosher salt 1/4 t. pepper 1 (15 oz) can low sodium chickpeas, drained & rinsed 1 cup cooked tri-color quinoa 2 oz. crumbled feta cheese
1. Chop tomatoes (2 cups), cucumber (1/2 cup), mint, oregano, and shallot (1 T.). Combine oil, vinegar, shallots, salt & pepper; whisk thoroughly.
2. Combine dressing, tomato, cucumber, herbs, chickpeas and quinoa in a large bowl; top with crumbled feta. Chill 30 minutes before serving.

I like it - but I like it cold with black beans, chopped avacado, copped cilantro, some salt and lemon juice. Very yummy.

I've never had any interest in trying quinoa, and our tortoise used to eat kale, so I'm well acquainted with its bitterness. Baked chips are like cardboard. Even the flavored ones.

Maybe you ate it unrinsed. It needs to be rinsed to get the toxins off. Many brands are sold pre rinsed. We used to eat it at home all of the time. Then Dh ate it out once, unrinsed (unknown to him) and he had a violent reaction. It's the only time I've seen him come home sick from work. He thought he had the flu. But the next time I made him my quinoa at home he had the same reaction. Allergist said he has an intolerance to it now . It's too bad because on Passover it didn't count as a grain so it was a good sub for bread/rice/pasta/etc. I only rinse quinoa half of time, I'm just lazy like that. And I've survived with no reactions.

I've had it with wild rice and didn't mind it. Minute rice has a blend that includes quinoa that's pretty good.
DH eats it nearly every day and cooks up a batch every Monday or Sunday night. I don't care for the smell of it cooking.
