I've never had a front loader but have heard lots of hate stories from my sister about hers. Last time we had to replace ours I got a top loader again. I'm 5 foot 3 inches and can reach into the bottom of my top loader easily. I love mine. I can wash a quilt in it (although it's not recommended) and it doesn't bang around much at all. It does get it nice and clean. It doesn't get any nasty smells from a seal like my sister's does-mine is a very basic model with a manual dial-I like things basic too.
I can wash wool garments on a gentle cycle and they come out great. What more do I need? Nothing really. Sometimes I think we over complicate things by adding lots of push button digital options when they aren't needed at all. That adds cost too. And more chances of things breaking down eventually. Just something to keep in mind.

I've had a front loader for years and HATE it! As soon as it dies, I will get a new huge capacity top loader again. I cannot dye things in it. No soaking. Water on the floor when I need to add anything. Not a fan. I will miss my "counter" space for folding and storing laundry to be put away but I'll live with it. Great point Seaexplore-the ability to dye things in a top loader vs. not being able to do it in a front loader. You might think you'll never need to do that but it's great to have that ability in case you ever do. I've never had a front loader so I never thought about water on the floor if you add anything, but yeah, I guess that would occur being that it's vertical. What a pain. I use the top of my washer and dryer to air dry clothes I don't want to put in the dryer. I spread out shirts or fleece jackets (it makes them pill less quickly) on the top and they dry flat that way. So the top of the washer and dryer is useful. I stand by the dryer, pull clothes out and fold them and/or hang them up. That's my method for folding instead of putting everything in a basket and then folding. It keeps the clothes more wrinkle free.

I love my top loader. Two years and no stinkiness. I call that success.

DH repairs appliances and would definitely say top load. I'm away from my computer for another day or two, but I've posted a couple of times about appliances. There's a list of brands that he suggests in those threads if you can find it.

I've had a front loader for probably 8-9 years now and it definitely doesn't get the laundry as clean as my former old top loader with an agitator did. Just being able to soak something before washing it for a couple hours is a big, big plus. Now if I wanted to soak something I have to do it in a basin or in the laundry sink and haul a heavy wet thing across the room to get it from the sink into the washer. Not fun.
When we bought the front loader, I didn't think we needed the pedestals to put them on. But now that I'm that much older and getting more arthritic by the day, I'm really wishing the washer and dryer were higher up off the ground. I'm short and feel like I practically have to climb into the stupid things to get everything out once the load is done.
And contrary to popular belief, I absolutely CAN stop my front loader to throw something in after I've started the cycle. Maybe not 15 minutes in, but a few minutes in, sure. Doesn't make me love it more though.

Front loading washer - LG - love it. I don't have issues with smell etc, but I leave the door open when it is not in use, and clean the rubber gasket and filter out regularly
ds and dil just bought a front loading maytag that they researched and said was a best rated washer. Haven't heard much from them about it, but they were glad to get new washer and dryer

We went with another front loader when our last one died. I seriously considered a top loader, but for the capacity we needed, I wasn't able to easily reach the bottom of the drum. Also, I like being able to sit on a stool and transfer everything from the washer to the dryer without having to bend over a top loader to unload. My front loaders have never smelled. We do wash frequently and I add vinegar to almost every load so I wonder if that helps?
