Nope! I want to get out. *looking at you check writers* Lol.....I'm looking at the chit chatters. It's fine if they can chat while the cashier is scanning items. But once the receipt has been handed over. Go chat on our own time!!!!!

No, but I wish more people did instead of taking their sweet sweet time poking around. I'm going to have to go with this. Seriously. Why does it take 47.6 minutes to put your flipping change away?! And why must you do that directly in front of the cashier? My purse is very neat and orderly so I can appreciate wanting to put away your change just so. So you know what I do?! I take my change and roll on past the cashier, out of the way, and take all the time I need *out of the flow of traffic.* This is one of my biggest irritations with the human race. That and the ones who don't pull all the way up in the drive-thru. It should not bother me as much as it does. I'm a very nice person otherwise. Yes to all of this!

Nope! I want to get out. *looking at you check writers* Why do people with checks always wait until AFTER they've been rung up to even start filling those dinosaurs out?!? I will agree that that is unacceptable.

I'm not particularly slow, but if I feel like someone behind me is rushing me or coming into my personal space, I will go extra slow on purpose. Yeah--I'm passive aggressive that way...

This is not a new thing, but it feels like it is getting worse. By the time I pull my card from the reader (I use a chip card to pay), the cashier has not even said "thank you for shopping here" or "have a good day" or any type of polite acknowledgement, but is already ringing up the next customer's items. I feel like I have to hurry to grab my bags and get out of the way. Is anyone else feeling rushed at checkout now a days? I can tell you why. Cashiers are now being graded on the amount of time between your receipt spitting out and scanning the first item of the next customer. If a cashier takes "too long" getting that next customer started according to corporate mandates, they will lose their job. If too many cashiers take too long, the manager will lose their job. So, yes, you are being rushed out. One of the chief reasons for this is due to customer complaints that they don't like waiting in line for more than three minutes. Combined with the fact that the chip readers have added time to the transaction, stores have to find ways to get back that time plus reduce even more time to satisfy customer demands. At the same time, retailers are also forcing managers to cut payroll from the front end. That means fewer open registers and therefore longer lines. But wait, customers hate long lines. So, let's force the few remaining cashiers to go even faster by cutting time wherever you can. If you are being passive aggressive and deliberately delaying, it won't make corporate change their mandates. It will only hurt the cashier, who is probably making minimum wage and is under tremendous pressure from the manager to cut her time.

Funny you ask this. Not exactly what you are referring to, but I am irritated so I will share.
I ran to the mall after dinner to hit Loft's sale. When I got to the store, no one else was in the store. I had been there about 15 min before anyone came in. I had an arm load of clothes to try on and the sales lady offered to take them to a dressing room for me. I said ok.
As I was looking for one last shirt - had the shirt, just needed a smaller size -, another lady came in and asked where a certain shirt went. She had been there earlier in the day and had seen a shirt that she came back for. Of course, I had the only one left in my pile of clothes to try on.
When I heard she wanted it, I ran to the dressing room to try it on. It was a perfect match for some shorts I was getting but was questionable if it would be too large or not. While I am in there trying it on, the other lady is asking who got the shirt. The sales lady said I did - and I assume she pointed to my dressing room because the next thing I know - the lady is banging on my dressing room door asking for the shirt.
WTH?!? She knew I had it....and was trying it on. She literally stood outside my door (I could see the tips of her shoes under the door) waiting on me to come out so she could get it. She was sighing heavily outside my door. I didnt even try on the other clothes I had picked up - I just opened the door and said 'here' so she would leave.
I have never been so rushed in my entire life.

I was checking out in Walmart one time, and the man behind me started taking items out of my cart and putting them on the belt thing. I was so shocked I was speechless. I know tons of people have touch my items before I got them, but I did not want him touching them.

I will agree that that is unacceptable. Unacceptable is entering the check into your check register while still at register. I don't do that until probably a month or two after I have written one. I don't write them often, maybe three times a month, but I refuse to have a debit card. I have had four friends have their information stolen and their account cleaned out. We keep way too much money in checking for me to feel comfortable with that. My bank scolds me every month, but it is all gone by the end of the month. No roll over.

I have never been so rushed in my entire life. This is outrageous. I can't believe the clerk pointed you out, and I can't believe the nerve of the "lady" that wanted the shirt you were trying on. I'd say email corporate, but I doubt it will matter. Loft used to have fantastic service, but it's gone downhill along with their designs. I emailed once about a problem at my local store and basically received an email that said, "too bad." There was a great sales associate who always went out of her way to help and helped me spend a lot of money in the process. Her manager totally dressed her down in front of the store for something trivial (not putting something on the right rack), and I emailed corporate about the manager's lack of professionalism. Their response was basically "too bad, it's an internal matter." So I took my money elsewhere and haven't shopped there since.

It is interesting to me how many of you have mentioned cheques. I'm struggling to remember the last time I saw one used in a shop. It has to be years.
But I do recall being a little bit miffed when the shopper in front would only start looking for their chequebook at the end of the whole process. It was never in the section of the handbag they started looking in first!

And I hope I didn't imply that I would ever be passive aggressive and try to hold up the cashier, because I certainly wouldn't. I was just making an observation. And it does remind me of when I was waiting tables, and I would be required to flip a table within a certain amount of time. Usually within 52 minutes, lunch or dinner. It's difficult because you can't do it without asking if they are ready for their next course, which must feel like rushing them.

Seriously, you don't direct one customer to go harass another.

I especially do now because of the chip. Used to be you would swipe your card and put it away while the cashier was still ringing up, now you have to insert it and wait until the transaction is over and then you are juggling signing, removing the card, getting the receipt, and taking your items all at once. And not forgetting the card in the slot. I don't have my chip card rhythm yet. I do intensely dislike the stupid chips. Everything went so much smoother and faster when we didn't have to wait for the cashier to finish. We could swipe and put away at the beginning of the transaction. I felt that way to when we got them. That they slowed me down, non chip cards you could put away while the transaction was authorizing. But now we've had the chips for so many years I don't even think about it any more.

I do feel rushed at the grocery store. We bag our own groceries here, so sometimes I'm still bagging and loading my cart when the cashier is finished. I then try to hurry back up to the cc machine to start that pain in the butt process, then I'll literally stand with my hand just under my card waiting on the machine to give me the all clear to remove it so people behind me know that I'm not taking my time entering my info. Too much pressure, lol!

. What chaps me the most is when the cashier is rushing through my stuff and bothers to ask me if I found everything I was looking for. Yeah, right, like you are going to slow down this line to help me find some oddball thing that wasn't where it ought to be? Didn't think so. :rolleyes. We ask this at our store, and if you say no....we WILL take a minute to see what you needed. If we have it, we call someone up to help you find it. If that holds the line, we call for backup cashiers or ask politely if you mind if we ring up the next person while you speak with our team member. Not all retail is the devil.....

If that holds the line, we call for backup cashiers or ask politely if you mind if we ring up the next person while you speak with our team member. Not all retail is the devil..... My eye roll was directed to the crazy stupid contradictory policies that management comes up with, that only make it more difficult for hardworking people to do their job. For example, someone on the GS board mentioned something that they saw at Tuesday Morning that I thought I could use. I called the product locator number with the SKU to see if any of the stores in my area had it showing as in stock, and the new store near me allegedly had ONE. So I went, combed through the area where it should have been, and didn't find it. When I went to check out with my other items, the (obviously new) young cashier quickly started ringing my stuff and offhandedly asked if I found everything I was looking for. There were about four people in line behind me, and I'm sure they all mentally groaned when I said, "Actually no. Is there a way for you to tell in your system if you have a particular item in stock if I have the SKU number?" The poor girl got kind of flustered, looked around for a minute, and eventually had to page someone up to the front to go somewhere else to check. Meanwhile she had my stuff half rung up, so she was kind of stuck with needing to finish ringing what I had in front of her so she could get to the other people in line behind me, and if the missing item would have been found I'd have to go through and do another separate transaction to pay for it. Ideally, I would look for someone working stock in the aisles or go to customer service to check before going to the register, but let's be real. There is NEVER anyone working stock in those stores and the only time you see an employee is at the checkouts so it all ends up on them. They also don't have a customer service desk where someone could go to find someone with a request like that. The lady who came up to check on the item basically did the same thing I did when she checked her computer in back and said, "Well, if it isn't on the shelf somebody probably bought it already." Gee, really? My point is that the people coming up with these 'customer service' talking points have obviously never witnessed how they don't work in actual practice and typically disrupt the flow of traffic at the point where everyone is already feeling rushed and stressed. It's ridiculous to me to expect the cashier to stop what she's doing to help someone find something when they're already at the point of purchase and there are other people in line waiting.

I thought of you all this morn when I was at the grocery store and noticed the woman in front of me writing out a check (after her order was rung up, nothing pre-filled.) It didn't bother me in the slightest, although I haven't encountered a check-writer in a long time. I'm of the mind that other people aren't responsible for helping me hurry up, and they're not the reason I'm behind/late if I am, whether in stores, traffic, wherever. If I feel rushed, it's my own problem to solve. (Someone is likely to interpret this to mean I don't care if I hold others up. Don't be that someone.)

I was curious so looked up wiki for more info. Sure enough, cheques are definitely in decline here and lots of stores do not accept them at all. In addition, banks have stopped issuing cheque guarantee cards. According to Wiki, in a lot of European countries cheques have almost vanished. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheque
