A rescue or a shelter. Can't imagine going anywhere else for a dog.
Our lab was a rescue from a backyard breeder. We got her at 5 weeks old.

That so called breeder is running a puppy mill! Walk away. Also, I have yet to meet a doodle that isn't a barking maniac. Anyone own a quiet one? I seriously can't stand dogs that bark just to hear themselves!

I seriously can't stand dogs that bark just to hear themselves! This made me laugh. Turriff does like to bark, but it isn't excessive and he has a lovely deep bark. (Unless he's in the car, where he sounds like a big girl.) And it's not just me who is saying he doesn't bark excessively, my neighbour whose living room is separated from mine only by an internal wall, says the same. She has two Bichon Frise puppies, and they never shut up! Give me a big dog WOOF over a little dog yap anytime.

I seriously can't stand dogs that bark just to hear themselves! My 6 month old goldendoodle is not a barker at all. She does not bark when the doorbell rings or when she hears neighbor dogs barking. We went camping with her this weekend and she did not bark at anything. She may be an exception to the rule, but she doesn't bark or whine.

A rescue or a shelter. Can't imagine going anywhere else for a dog. I totally agree with you, but at least here, it's not like it was when I was a kid. We knew when we bought the house last year that a dog would be close behind. I started watching a couple of rescue sites here and the vast majority of the dogs that are left are pit bull or pit mix. If you happen to find one that isn't they're adopted within an hour or less. I have nothing against pitts, but to own one means you become an ambassador for the breed. As a first time adult pet owner I'm not willing to take on the responsibility of both the dog and the stigma of the breed. I barely knew what I was doing with George, and even with his sweet disposition I'm still on the kids about understanding when he indicates he wants space. A friend was also looking to adopt at the same time, but they wanted a dog that wouldn't be very big, (under 30lbs full grown). Again, the majority was a chihuahua, which was not the breed they wanted. She looked for over 4 months, when something that resembled a Lasa, or other non chihuahua breed would come up they would have a wait list within 30 minutes. They ended up buying a dog and felt terrible about it, but she was done spending a good portion of her day tracking the local rescue site for the right dog for her family. George came to us via a DH's co-worker who lives on a farm. Again, I felt terrible about not going through a shelter but at the same time to get what works for us and our family we needed to go elsewhere. All this to say, I understand and validate your point. I donate to one of our local shelters, and we participate in events that directly support the local humane society. But it's just not the way it was when I was a kid and we would go to the local humane society when we were ready to get a pet.

But it's just not the way it was when I was a kid and we would go to the local humane society when we were ready to get a pet. ITA. When we moved south, one of my first priorities was to get a dog. I fully intended find one through a shelter or rescue. When I was younger, that was what we did. Totally different experience now. All of the shelters were full of pits and large dogs. Nothing else. Truly, nothing else. I went to a regional dog adoption fair and they had 450 dogs. I truly believed I was coming home with a dog. Nope. Only 1 was less than 50 pounds and that dog was snapped up by the lady who came hours early to be first on line. As far as the rescues, either their requirements were ridiculous or they simply never answered my calls or emails about specific dogs on their websites. After months of dedicated searching, I finally found a dog through a rescue hours away in the city one of my girls lives in, and ended up paying a premium (and it turned out the family who surrendered him lied about his medical problems, which my vet said is very common.) Next time, I am going to a reputable breeder.

Something else that occurs to me, what happens if your dog in heat jumps the fence and is accidentally impregnated by a random neighborhood mutt (or the mutt is the one that jumps the fence)? It happens and isn't always in your full control, this is basic biology on the part of the dogs, how does this affect the breeder's schedule and profit margin and how does that affect this contract?

What happens if the dog dies? Either during birth, due to an accident or illness, whatever.

She will stand in the window and bark at the leaves blowing in the trees. Outside she is simply inconsolable. Drives everyone crazy! My next-door neighbor's gdoodle is the exact same way. She knows us. She sees us outside every single day, and YET she feels the need to bark her face off at us every time she goes outside. When she is in the farthest back part of their yard she can see us inside our house and she will still bark at us. She's super friendly, but I wish she would kindly stfu. Cute dog, but hard to actually like her. SaveSave

We had a Cocker Spaniel poodle, a cockapoo. Poodle mixes used to be found at the pound more than any other cross. Now it's bullies.

Be back in a few years with the update! The best part, no pesky AKC to deal with. $2700 for a mutt, woo hoo! All aboard the gravy train!

The moment you mix 2+ breeds, its a MUTT. Ugh. Would I pay $1000 for a king charles? Yes because they are hard to come by here. Would I pay $1000 for a mutt? Shit no. I'd go to the pound. One shih tzu is from a breeder. The other is from the pound. Both great dogs.

We decided not to get a dog. I'm sorry it's not the right time for a dog, but glad you are not going with this breeder.
