Who else has a craft space in the basement? My space is beautiful and functional (sez me ). But it's in the basement. I have a hard time getting myself down there to work on projects; in winter, it's cold, and in summer -well, once again - it's in the basement. Most of the time I bring projects upstairs to the kitchen, like I use to do when I didn't have a craft space!

It's referred to by my friends as the post apocalyptic crafting bunker. That's hilarious. I also have a basement craft room. It's a great room, but like gulfcoastgirl said, it's cold in the winter and in the summer - it's still in the basement. I bring projects up to work on in my kitchen, too - I work away all day on Sundays, and my husband and I can get caught up on our TV shows at the same time. Win win. SaveSave

This is why I'm happy with my corner of the family room - I had a craft room briefly (and then it got turned back into a bedroom)...I don't like being shut away from the rest of the house -I like being part of it. I wouldn't like a basement craft space unless it was part of a family space where everyone else was hanging out.

I used to live in a house with an unfinished basement and that's where my scrap room was. I scrapped maybe two or three times during the year we lived there. It felt like a dungeon.

In my last house, I had a small craft room in the finished basement. It was great for temperatures, cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It was out of the way, but the TV was in the room next to mine, so I still interacted a bit with everyone.

I used to be up in our spare "bedroom" which isn't big enough to be a bedroom any longer. No AC (old house AC on 1st floor only) so not much summer crafting happening.
I moved into our sunroom (enclosed side porch) and i love it there. It's right next to the living room so DH and I can talk. I don't feel so isolated. Plus i have 3x more room. Before i moved i dragged stuff down to the dining room. I have AC and 4 windows.

My craft room is in the basement and I love it! Our house is a raised bungalow and the basement is completely finished with a family room and large windows. I don't feel like I'm in a dungeon or cave at all. In fact, sometimes I scrap after everyone has gone to bed and I can use my Cameo and Vagabond (which are a little loud at times) without anyone hearing a thing. The only thing I wish about my craft room is that it was bigger!

I've got my craft room in the walkout level of our split level. It's got 2 windows so it doesn't feel basement-y (except the concrete slab under the carpet whereas everywhere else is hardwood) but it does have a weird trim on the wall and the bottom of the wall sticks out further than the top, if that makes sense, so I can't stack my expedit cubes the tall way. Also, it's a small room that I share with my husband and his desk, which is silly since we have this big house and we spend most of our time in the smallest room together!

I'm in the basement and love it, but it's finished and also part of the family room with a tv. We have a baseboard heater, but I also use a space heater if I'm cold.

I'm also stuck in the basement, absolutely no windows. But I have a TV. But this is definitely why I sometimes don't scrap when I have spare time. I want to hang out with the family. In daylight!

growing up, my craft space was in our basement - but at that time it was an escape, my mom rarely came down except to do laundry and if I was there she would get me to move the laundry for her
I kind of wish I had a basement or someplace of my own to go craft.

When my boys decided they wanted their own rooms, my scrap area was in danger. I convinced my husband that boys belong downstairs and we added on a room and deck. Best decision ever.

I scrap in the basement too- our house is a little strange. I have a walkout basement and we have an old kitchenette in our bedroom- which is now our craft room. Lots of cabinets for storage, small but enough room that all the kids have a little craft storage too( I need the most though ) Fortunately it has a nice window, but the overhead lighting is terrible. On a nice sunny day it is great to scrap in, winter not so much. I honestly have no complaints though, this is the first house I have had a little room and I love it.

I'm in the basement, called the Craft Cave. I recently downsized from a pretty good size room with a closet to a small 7x7 "closet". But this was part of the basement remodel and my family room is right off my craft area. I use it a ton more. Before we had a family room down there I kept a Raskog cart upstairs with my most used essentials, spent quite a bit of time at the dining room table to be near my people.

It's referred to by my friends as the post apocalyptic crafting bunker. We lived in a quad several states ago. My space was originally in the basement. It turned into I would only craft 10 minutes at a time while I was waiting for the dryer or washer to finish it's cycle. It wasn't a pretty basement. I had no mojo there. I eventually started digi scrapping just so I didn't have to go down there. Then I got tired of not playing with my pretty paper and moved just enough up into the family room to make a small area for myself. Since it wasn't everything, it still didn't feel complete, and I still had a hard time creating. Plus I really felt I needed to keep the area clean.

Mine is in the basement and is too small for me and only has a tiny window. I make it work (AKA every wall used for storage space) and it has in-floor heat with my own thermostat so I stay cozy in the winter (which was the drawback of my basement room in our old house). When we built I sacrificed the space I wanted so we could have 2 decent sized bedrooms in the lower level for kids...at some point I would like to join one of those bedrooms with my room so I would gain more space, a full-sized window and a walk-in closet I could take an upstairs bedroom/loft area but I prefer keeping my stuff out of the way. Also, I plan to start up card making groups again in the future or even if I have friends over, I would prefer to set up tables in our family room so I would like to keep it all on one level. All I know is I started out "making do" with unfinished space in the basement and hated it. I loved it when I had finished space to decorate, then I looked forward to spending time there. I'm also primarily a late night/early morning crafter so I don't need something that's more convenient during the day.

I could have taken an extra space in the basement, but I knew I would not like it. It's too isolated and there are no windows. I knew I didn't like being isolated from when I had my craft room in a second floor bedroom.
I now scrap at one end of our formal living room. I can still holler down to DH in the family room. I have LR and DR windows to enjoy.
I'm hoping when we downsize to a one level home, that it will have a finished basement with a walkout area that I can use. I'll set up a tv area there for DH.

Also, it's a small room that I share which is silly since we have this big house and we spend most of our time in the smallest room together! This so us!! When my my kids were young, on any given evening, I would be scrapping, dh would be on the computer and the kids would be watching tv. We have a living room and family room, but all four of us were crammed into a small craft room. Now that my kids have moved out, I miss those days.

Mine is a corner of our finished basement. I love being in the family room with the tv and computer. This room also has wide windows so it's fairly bright as basements go. Unfortunately DH decided the room would function better flip flopped so now my 1/4 of the room keeps getting squished smaller and smaller. I'm working at reclaiming space but it is seriously ruining my mojo.

I have mine in a basement in what's supposed to be a bedroom....I do get decent natural light though, as it's not completely underground, so that's a plus. Now that my kids are older, I like that I can go hole myself up in my "art room" and have peace and quiet to work. For some serious craft room envy, check out what Melody Lane has done--the entire main part of her house is her craft space! Melody Lane craft room tour
Edited to add that the tour starts at about 3:49...she does ramble a bit since it was originally a live streaming tour.

I used to have a basement craft room until it became my son's room. I loved it more than the current space in the living room. My home was built in the late 1990's so there's plenty of light. It's a bit chilly in the unfinished portion in the winter but feels awesome in the summer. My someday goal is to clear out one side of the lower portion of our basement and have it be my office/craft space. I have zero plans on making it spectacular, just functional!

Ha! I just showed DH the video where you could see the whole room and then she pans to her paper wall. He said "Holy shit, it looks like a store!". How much money do people make doing this? I'd really be curious to know.

I'd really be curious to know. Apparently, it can be pretty lucrative. She even has an assistant! I know she was a hairdresser before, so maybe she saved a ton of money or sold a salon or something. I'm not really sure.

My room isn't in a basement, but it is isolated. Not long after this house was built, the owners turned what was the formal living room and dining room into a mother in law suite (I don't know if the 2 rooms it is now were always 2 rooms or if it was one giant room and they added a wall to make it 2 smaller rooms later). My husband has about 80% of the dining room as his office (it's small, but it works for him...when we did the walk through and saw these 'bonus' rooms, he immediately waived any claim to the larger room that I occupy) and I have the large room (it is the living room plus a few feet from what was the dining room...they added a bathroom and a closet, so instead of an open rectangle, it's a very awkward 'T' shape) as my craft space. In the 6 1/2 years we've lived here, it's gone from just a place for the random crafting odds and ends (I wasn't a scrapbooker then) with what furniture I had...mostly just plastic drawer units and my computer desk for the computer and office-y things with lots of room to grow (I even briefly had a playpen for my oldest so I could be in here and didn't have to worry about him wandering off...that didn't last long because he hated it) to full to the brim. It's a great space, but because of all of the walls and such, I can't really fit a HUGE workspace in here that allows me to share with my kids (my oldest will sometimes take over the open space while I'm crafting...but he doesn't fit like I had hoped he would when we did the minor remodeling in here last year). I can't really interact with people in the house while I'm in here and I'm mostly okay with that, but I have bigger dreams.
We have a 2 story living room and my grand plan is to close in the second floor of it and move my craft room up there along with my husband's office and then to add dedicated desks for each of my kids. That way, when my husband is home and the kids are all in school with schoolwork to do, we can ALL be in the same room doing our own thing but still be together. Yes, my crafting stuff (along with my vision for a huge work area that would be at least 6x6 that would go in the center of the room) would take up the majority of the space, but as the kids get older and I can trust them with my 'good' supplies, I'd love it to be more than just MY stuff. I'm thinking it's a $10-$20k project depending on finishes and if we go the route of adding custom cabinetry, so unlike most of our projects that are just the cost of our tax return, it is something we'll have to save up for for a few years to make happen. I think the space is about 18x18, so we could do a lot with it.
Just goes to show that you can be in the main area of your house and STILL feel like you're isolated.
I have a friend who used to use her dining room as her craft space until she bought a bigger house. Now she has a dedicated room and almost never uses it because it's not big enough for her family to join her and she misses the interaction she had before. She's been toying with the idea of moving into the dining area of her current house for a while because she misses being with her family.
Man, I'm long winded!!

I'm kind of in this boat, also. I used to have a huge basement room with room for my kids and I to create in the same space, but now we're in a different house and those spaces are separate. We've been in this house a year, so I'm still getting a feel for how we use the space, but I'm totally open to moving things around. I think so many people get hung up on what a floor play says a room is supposed to be instead of just using it how it works best for them.

My husband and I are planning to get Bar In Basement . We just want a convenient spot to get together with with our friends without crowds or noise, where we can flip on the game or music we want or switch it all off. This is our dread place:
