I'm asking on behalf of my sister who is 35. Last week she was in the hospital for a yet-to-be officially diagnosed blood clotting disorder and was put on the blood thinner Xarelto.
This week she is having her period and the amount of blood is alarming. She has called her doctor and they don't seem concerned but getting through her days and nights is difficult with the "mess."
Do any Peas have experience with this or suggestions?
She is at a healthy weight, non-smoking, and does not take birth control. Currently she is on a 3 week loading dose of Xarelto but then will go to 10mg less of it.

I had already had a hysterectomy when I went on Xarelto, but I recall reading a side effect was heavier than normal bleeding.

That would be very frightening to me. I'm on Xaralto right now, and have been since late January. I've had no bleeding problems but am careful not to sustain any injury that might result in bleeding. After over 3 months of bedrest I was so weak that moving around was risky and I worried a lot about being injured from being so unstable. Fortunately my strength is returning.
I was on 20's and now on 15's.

Are they planning on more children?
I would think her gyn dr would discuss options to end her periods.

OMG...Me.
I would have her being watched closely by her Doctors and have her blood levels checked. I had serious issues that resulted in many blood and iron transfsusions. They couldn't due a hysterectomy on my because I was on xarelto. Ended up having the arteries to my uterus embolized. I am still recovering and can not get my iron levels back to the normal range.
If she is really concerned, I wouldn't hesitate to go to the er to have my blood levels checked.
TMI...the clots are what scared me the most. They were described by the nurses at shift change as tennis ball size. They would come everytime I stood up. I was wearing depends in the hospital. UGH
Good luck!

yep.. well Im not on xarelto though but I'm on warfarin(off brand coumadin) and have been for 11years..but lemme tell you it looked like a massacre happened every month.. and it wasn't just for a week, it was for 3 weeks(then stop for a week maybe then start again) I kept having to go in the hospital for blood because my iron would go so low--once it was so low it didn't register at all!.. I'm on the blood thinner because I have a mechanical valve in my heart, I can not come off the blood thinner. btw I was 32 when I had the heart surgery and went on the blood thinner I had a mirena IUD put in, but my uterus rioted and rejected it,the IUD disappeared(likely in one of the numerous huge clots).. I had a uterine ablation, only helped for one month then it was right back to massacre scene.. bad. 2 super plus tampons AND a pad ever 15minutes kind of bad. I now take a birth control pill everyday, never taking the week off, and therefore no period. its not ideal, as artificial hormones are frowned upon while on a blood thinner, but it's what has worked. I have no insurance so a hysterectomy isn't really an option

Thank you all for the input so far. She called her doctor's office again and they told her to come in. It seems to be getting worse and she's nearing what should be the normal end to her period cycle. She is reading your responses - I'll keep you updated and if she has any questions. Thank you again.

My dd was on lovenox for 5 months. Her hematologist told her to expect heavy periods for a few cycles after she was off it too. They monitored her blood counts while on it. She needs to watch for blood in her urine, nosebleeds, & excessive bruising. It's frightening to see a lot of blood. Especially when it's your own.
