I'll be putting together a 12x12 album that will hold 17 page protectors, with pages that are not overly lumpy but not completely flat either. Will most post bound albums hold this many? It doesn't seem like a big number, but post bound albums always look so thin to me. I've only used D-ring albums, so I have no experience here.
Also, any recommendations for a basic black 12x12 postbound? (I'm guessing you're all going to say WRMK)

You can get extenders for the post bound if needed. I would think 17 should fit. And YES, WRMK are the best albums (IMO). Once in a while you'll get a turkey, but I have over 60 of them and they all work well.

I also recommend "spacers" that you put on the posts in between the page protectors, especially for the ones that are a bit lumpy.

I now use 3 ring but when I did use post bound CTMH (Close To My Heart) in my opinion is the best quality post bound albums on the market. They are more expensive though. I realize you only need to fit 17 page protectors in, my CTMH albums fit 50 page protectors (100 pages). Regardless of the brand you choose, I also recommend putting in a few page spacers so your album doesn't fan out.

Most post bound hold 20 page protectors easily so you will be fine.

It all depends on how wide the spine cover is, really. Instead of adding extenders, I switched out the posts the album came with for longer posts from the hardware store. (ask for screw posts or binding posts) The CTMH post bound albums (don't know if they still make them, but the quality was fantastic) held 50-75 page protectors with 3" screw posts. Their spine covers were really wide and slid into the cover instead of being attached to the posts. The albums were heavy but sturdy with the longer posts.
