People are beginning to ask me what I'd like for my birthday at the end of July, and I'm coming to the conclusion that I really want an action camera, but can't justify the cost of a go pro.
Anyone use a similar type of camera that doesn't cost 300 bucks?
Ideally, it's under $100, is waterproof and is meant to shoot action video. (but really is going to wind up shooting video of my kids goofing off on the beach)

We bought a knock off go-pro for about $40-50 on Amazon. My DH just based it off the reviews. We haven't used it much yet but it works well. The camera function itself isn't great I think it's only 5mp so they are a little grainy but the video is good. My DD has it with her in Costa Rica right now, I'm excited to see her videos.

I got a $47 knock off on Amazon for my birthday and it works well and fits all the go pro accessories.

Amazon has a couple different brands with decent reviews for under $100. They look almost identical to the Go pro and even use the same accessories.
I personally bought the Lightdow LD4000 1080P HD Sports camera. It works great. At $42.95 It was perfect. It comes with some accessories and I bought an additional accessory pack.

We bought 2 of these for our boys. They take great pictures and videos for the price. Their underwater videos are pretty awesome. Can't beat the price either! Vivitar Action Cam

My boys ( who are 14 and 21) both bought this camera Last summer before going Mountain Biking in Colorado. Action CameraThey also bought these accessories to go with it. Action Cam Accessories. All off of Amazon. The camera is a pretty good one. They have both been really happy with it. They use them biking all of the time. our youngest had his mounted to the side of our truck recording while going through the National park. The oldest uses his in his car all of time. We are headed to Yellowstone and Glacier National park this summer for site seeing and more mountain biking for the boys, they have already started talking about which mounts they will need to take for the cameras.

DH has a Contour action cam w/ waterproof housing. The video quality and sound are good, and it's been very durable. He's had it for maybe 4-5 years, and it still charges well, works well, etc. He's used it in situations ranging from the waterpark to strapped on his helmet in working fires. I don't know what model it was, but he's been completely happy with it.
