We are finally going to replace the nasty carpet in our living room, dining room ( who DOES that?!) and staircase! My dream is to have the entire first floor ( which would include foyer, kitchen, a small hallway and guest bathroom) all the same flooring throughout. We want a wood look, but nothing I've seen so far, I trust in a kitchen. I wouldn't mind the wood look tile in the kitchen, but don't want that for the whole house, and besides, how would you cover the stairs in tile!?
UGH so many choices and none that I've found are exactly what I want - wood style (probably not solid wood, don't want to mess with sanding and refinishing) sturdy and tough as crap for high wear and tear, a dog, and two boys, tougher than water and food spills in the kitchen, and not tile.
Is there such a beast?

My son and his wife just had vinyl plank that looks and feels exactly like hand scraped oak floors installed in their house. They have a 2 year old and soon another baby plus a medium sized dog (who will pee on the floor if he feels he is being ignored) and a cat (who barfs for random reasons). They love it & I think it's very pretty. They don't have stairs, though. They priced true hardwoods (which is what they wanted), wood looking ceramic tile (which they liked the look of) and this vinyl and there was $10,000 difference in the price between the 3 choices. For the size of their home (1600 sf) they decided to go with what would be easiest to keep looking nice & still be trendy.
I really like it, too, and am now trying to convince DH to have our floors done, too.

Just a FYI, I've had wood floors in 2 of the 4 kitchens of the homes/condos I've owned. They've held up beautifully in the kitchens as well as powder rooms (also water and high traffic) and are my preferred floor surface for kitchens. If you haven't found one that's durable and/or the finish you want keep looking. It's out there!

We used Mannington Adura Distinctive Luxury Vinyl Planks. Our kitchen already had hardwood in it which did not need replacing, so this was only used in the other living areas of the house. The flooring has been down for three years, and there isn't a mark on it. I would not hesitate to use it in a kitchen though. It's much more comfortable to walk on than the hardwood too. I don't know if it is suitable for stairs. I painted our stairs in a color that complemented the vinyl planks.

We put in Aquaguard throughout the house and I've been really happy with it. It's very water resistant and durable - and believe me we've put it to the test! I think it's only carried at Floor and Decor

bamboo -- it is hard as nails and you *can* find it on sale ... but it is expensive!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! There's a floor and decor not too far from me and i had planned on going this weekend. I'm glad I have some specific things to look for, instead of just wandering around. I have a good idea of the style and finish I'd like, just not the material or construction. Thanks for giving me a new starting point!

Try looking in showhomes to see what kind of flooring is in them and how the flow of the flooring is from one room to the next.
