My DD who is 16 is far more into makeup than I ever was or am. Also, unlike me, she has an oily face. She keeps asking me to take her to local drug stores and buys oil free make up and supposedly other products that she thinks will work. I have tried convincing her that we need to see the help of a makeup professional.
We we have been to a dermatologist. When she is not wearing makeup, she manages her skin well. She has cleanser and stuff from the dermatologist that helps with cleaning and clearing acne. So, without makeup, her skin is fairly normal.
Where should I take her to be taught and buy the appropriate foundation system for her problem? Another reason this is an issue is that she is a member of 2 performing teams at school and their makeup is not optional. They all have to wear the same face (responsible for their own foundation).
Thanks for helping this weary mom out!!!

Take her to Sephora or Ulta. And make sure she keeps up with her skin care routine when she wears make up. She needs to remove all her make up before she starts cleansing and washing her face.

I know a lot of people who love Sephora and/or Ulta, but I started out going to the Clinique counter when I was in high school. My mom scheduled a makeover for me and the lady who helped me was awesome. She picked out foundation, powder, a cleansing system, subtle eye makeup, and blush that complimented my skin tone. I am extremely pale and have a hard time matching foundation sometimes. I still use Clinique for my foundation, powder, and BB Cream. Love Clinique! You might have good luck there with your DD.

Do people that work in these stores have skin care KNOWLEDGE or are they just sales people? These stores are very over whelming to me.

Another reason I agree with going to Sephora or Ulta is that if the makeup doesn't work for her, you can return it. So be sure to keep the receipts. Also, she can get samples of most things so she can try it before you buy it.

You might want to look for an oil-controlling primer to use before the foundation.
Also, make sure her brushes/sponges are clean.

I used to have very oily skin. Clinique would be a good place to start. Oil-free, or non-comedogenic( doesn't cause zits) make-up. There are some decent liquid blushes out there now. Blotting papers, which you can get anywhere. And she needs to make sure that she is removing all of her makeup at night. Also, she should be wearing sunscreen under that makeup. She'll thank you in about 20 years.
You can buy some decent products in the drugstore. Cover Girl makes a decent foundation, and their Clean line is made for oily skin.

As someone who also used to have oily skin, I 3rd Clinique. A very good drugstore option is Revlon ColorStay.

Many people at Sephora ( and Ulta ) do have knowledge, but not all. Even if they don't they are experienced with the tools Sephora has to guide you in the right direction.
One thing I learned a little late in life, my oily skin responds better when I give it oil. I use Josie Maran products and they've helped reduce the oil and breakouts.

I just want to add a HUGE yes to this. I have oily skin and was frustrated for years until I learned that it's better when I moisturize. I agree with Sephora or Ulta. Ulta has Clinique now, so she can learn about that, but also many other options. The generous return policies are a must for the learning stage. She can try lots of different things and learn what works for her without you wasting a lot of money.

I always liked clinique...right up until yesterday. I should say that it is just the one clinique lady at the one counter, but dang. She made me feel like poo on a stick because I very nicely asked for a moisturizer that doesn't have sunscreen. They make it, so I know that other people ask for it too, but she gave me the full on stink eye and a five minute lecture on why I am wrong in not wanting it. I live in Florida, I get the need. I really do. But...the fact of the matter is that amount of moisturizer you use doesn't have the amount of sunscreen you need for it to be effective. Not to mention the fact that in order for sunscreen to be at it's maximum efficiency, it needs to be reapplied every 80 minutes or so. By the time I leave my house, 45 minutes of that has already elapsed-it doesn't last all day. I wear sunscreen faithfully when I am outside for any length of time, and usually a hat, but goodness, to lecture me?? No thank you. (apparently my vent of the day. lol) Anyway, I am going to say in spite of my major irritation with the Clinique lady yesterday, I would head that way. They are generally really good with people and they have great products for teenagers.

The problem with a lot of oil-free products is that they actually strip oil from the skin, and then your skin over-produces its own oil. It's a vicious cycle. As a couple others have mentioned, it's often better to use things with a little bit of oil in them to help regulate the skin's oil production.
I would recommend Sephora. At least around here, the staff is much more knowledgeable than at Ultas. Also, I like Sephora (and Ulta) over an individual counter like Clinique because they can draw from a lot of products and recommend what's actually best for you, regardless of the brand.

I also want to reiterate the need for moisturizer. My skin does so much better when I moisturize daily.
Several Youtubers that I watch have oily skin. I linked a video below that's from a Youtuber I watch. She has a drugstore and a high end foundation recommendation video too. I like her foundation routine in the video I linked.

anxiousmom I'm sorry you had a bad experience at the Clinique counter! That's terrible. I have always had a great experience at Clinique, but I know there are bad eggs out there.

I would go to Sephora, that way you can try samples, before investing in the products.
Some of the staff knows a lot, and some don't and only recommend what they like or have used. Ask to speak to a skin care specialist.
I went through some trial and error, and tried many samples that didn't work for me. One day, I talked with an extremely knowledgeable staff member, who inquired what I do in the morning and evening as far as skin care routine, what I was wanting to achieve makeup wise, what my problem areas are, and what have I tried and didn't work. Based on that, they made recommendations and gave me samples. Those recommendations were awesome and I finally found skin care and makeup that works for me.
Be patient, sometimes it's trial and error, because what works for one, may not work for another.

I would go to Ulta if possible. They have drugstore AND high end brands (including Clinique) at that store. I would ask to speak with the manager and then have them recommend the best person on their staff with skin care knowledge. I also would do some research beforehand, if possible. Good luck!
I also have greasy skin and some primers and foundations make my skin look great for a while and then I look like a grease ball in a few hours. GROSS. I want to be matte all day!

One of the problems with drugstore cosmetics is the chemical warfare on your face that can ensue. Some product lines put their acid neutralizer in the toner, others in the moisturizer, others in the foundations. The same with other aspects of make up like anti oxidants, retinal and other active ingredients. Once you determine a skin care regime, it should be the same if you are wearing a foundation and other cosmetics or not. You skin needs taking care of. Like others have mentioned, if you have oily skin and skip moisturizers, then the skin works overtime to replace moisture and gets oilier. My daughters had the hardest time believing that.
Figure out what she is going to go with and stick to it for at least a month to determine if it is going to work or not. Once you know what you are going to use, THEN you can go to the drugstore or WalMart and pay less for it. If she gets a makeover and follows the recommendations given she should be able to return the product if it becomes a problem like a rash or wrong color whether she goes to a Clinque counter or to Ulta.

Yes, please moisturize. If she doesn't, then the body will produce excess oil to compensate. And oil and moisture aren't the same thing. The skin's oil is sebum which is there to protect the skin's surface. Moisture is the 'water' content of the skin cells which makes them plump.

I would also invest in a Clairsonic face brush if it's in the budget. This will ensure that she gets her face as clean as possible. I use my brush with a Philosophy's Purity cleanser. I don't use my brush daily, but I don't wear foundation every day, either. I love Josie Maran's cleansing and moisturizing products. I use Smashbox BB water when I wear foundation. It provides light coverage but has never caused me to break out or have clogged pores.

To this day, I use an oil-free or water-based moisturizer, even in the winter. Everyone's skin is different. I have never been able to use oil of any sort on my skin; I get whiteheads almost immediately. This winter I found a nice, water-based moisturizer by Neutrogena, and used it under my sunscreen. It really helped keep my skin from getting dry. I like a mix of high end and drugstore makeup. I have some oil-free Cover Girl foundation that I use, and also some MAC and Lancôme. Sometimes I use MAC blush; sometimes Tarte, and sometimes Neutrogena. Works for me.

We went to Sephora and they have these things that they held up to her face to match her skin tone to a foundation. It was great! I am terrible at matching colors, and as expensive as foundation can be to keep buying it to find the right color, Sephora was worth it!
My daughter also had acne (I never had it as a teen, but her dad did), so she went to a dermatologist, and finally after a year and a new doctor, they got it right! When she was at college, her face cleared up, but when she came home, it would break out again. Her dorm was very old, and we joked that their water must be good for skin!

maybelline fit me matte and poreless foundation and setting powder i live where it's hot as hell and that is the only thing that hold up on my oily skin. Also pick her up blotting sheets they will save the day. You can try a oil control primer as well.
