Oh, but he didn't MEAN to do it. It isn't like he CHOSE to kill anyone. And, and.... alcoholism is a disease, ya know... we don't know his situation... surely his guilt is enough....
Ugh, I'm right there with you.
I know a guy that has had a few DUIs. For the first two his lawyer was able to get him off. The third one resulted in his license being taken away, temporarily. During that time his wife left him. He still managed to get a fourth DUI. That time he spent a year in prison. Amazing how he is able to keep from getting behind the wheel after drinking now. He hasn't stopped the alcohol but he has learned how to call a cab.

I agree. I wish it were treated as murder and had a lot stiffer sentences for all infractions. Until it does I don't see much changing. I know someone who was arrested twice for did, non injury accidents, them ended up killing a man while drunk driving, fled the scene and still only got less then 6 months on jail. Drunk drivers disgust me.

I agree. There's never a reason to get behind the wheel after drinking. Ever. Saturday we went to a party where I had two drinks over the course of 3 hours (I was very intentional in my alcohol consumption and had my husband who doesn't drink to drive me home) when we left dh asked if I was buzzed and I told him I was. He asked if I would be able to drive if I needed to and I told him that if my life depended on it I wouldn't drive. I just couldn't put someone else at risk.
My ex husband killed his friend who was a passenger in his car while drunk over 35 years ago. He served one year in jail. And his life has been seriously f-ed up since but he's alive. He got married and had kids and is a grandfather now. His friend died. The friend's mom lost her son. Ex husband made a stupid choice but could never pay for it. The friend's family pays every day.

my friend lived in moscow in the early 1960's. if you were caught drunk driving.. they stopped you and took your car. game over. maybe we could do that here.. a $1-40,000 lost would get their attention.

If Arizona is like Texas, he will get a slap on the wrist and be back behind the wheel. I hate drunk drivers.

So sad that this is happeneing way more than it should. I am so sorry you got stuck in that mess and especially sorry for the loss of life in senseless stupid action of others. My heart goes out too all those involved. There have been so many of the wrong way driver incidents in just the last year here. They keep trying different things but the only thing that would work is take the keys away.

I hate drunk drivers with a passion.
I think it should be prosecuted as attempted manslaughter every single time.
I love the idea of impounding the car immediately and selling it to be used for victim funds. If it isn't your car, then the owner could get it back.
Colorado has a felony dui law, but it's got to be the 3rd or 4th dui to kick in.
I'd like to see it be a felony by the 2nd time.

Me too. There's never a reason to get behind the wheel after drinking. Ever. Exactly. Not one reason, ever.

So so sad. People just think a few is Ok. It's NOT ! When we're out to dinner, which is usually at least once a week, most days I can't find anyone drinking water or soda but me !! How are they getting home ? It's a disgrace. Like someone above said, without stiffer penalties, this will continue.

Great idea! They cars could be given to deserving people instead of a drunk driver. So many lives could be saved!

It is disgusting how we tolerate drunk drivers. Once is horrible, but the second time you are caught should be automatic jail and your car should be impounded.

Drunk drugged whatever
The tiny sentences they get when convicted is sickening. The asshat who killed my sister only got 3.5 years ( well 5 years of which he is expected to serve 3.5 max )
ok I'll stop there - touchy touchy subject for me

If I didn't like your reply on this thread, that's probably necause It was too sad for me and I didn't want to "like" it. I am sorry for all you peas who lost a loved one to these assholes or to those who deal with them.
We "lost" few friends over the years because, "we can't gi to prapea's house for dinner because she will force us to stay or one of us can't drink". I told the husband, i will not miss those people nor will I change for them

I agree!!! When I was 5 years old we were leaving my aunts house and I went and sat in the back seat of the car which was parked in her driveway and laid down in the back seat. (1960's no one wore seat belts). While my mom and newborn sister were standing on the porch saying goodbye to my aunt a drunk driver crossed the road came into my aunts yard, hit mom's car with me in it and totaled it! It flipped twice before it stopped. Miraculously, I wasn't thrown from the car. The drunk driver got off with a slap on the wrist and I got years of back problems. I think there should be harsher penalties on the first offense.

That's just heartbreaking. This guy is a total idiot, as are all drunk drivers. My sympathies go out to the victim's family and friends.

I'm here in Nebraska marking the 10th anniversary of my parents being killed by a drunk boater. He only spent 7 years in prison for killing 2 people. So I concur with your sentiments.

I hate them too. And my live in BF got picked up last September for it. That did not go over well with me, and he knew it. I never held back in my lectures, looks or anything. He lost his license for 6 months, spent 2 days in jail, and was pretty much house bound the whole time. He was also laid off of work (seasonal work), so he was really stuck at home unable to go anywhere. Looking at his truck parked on the curb outside. He had to ask for rides from me, in front of my kids. He was humiliated, and I loved every second of it. He has learned his lesson big time, and I make sure he is reminded of it quite a bit. Luckily for everyone, not a single person or property was hurt at all. Just his pride. And now his bank account still paying off fines and high insurance. I'm so sorry for the people who have lost loved ones because of idiots

My dear, dear friend from middle school called me this morning. Her dad, a retired firefighter was at a stoplight. Some drunk came barreling down the road, slammed into friend's dad, shoving his SUV into a box truck. He died on impact. Driver blew 2 times the legal limit..... At 2in the afternoon. I agree, drunk drivers suck.

I agree, drunk drivers suck. OMG...I'm so sorry. My best friend growing up spent 37 days in a coma, along with many other injuries our senior year in high school because she got in the car with someone who was drunk and they hit a tree at high speed. She and another passenger were damn near killed, and still have issues from that accident 25 years later. I wish all states would have the yellow 'scarlet letter' plates like Ohio. Anytime I hear it mentioned for other states people cry about them shaming the owner. They SHOULD be ashamed of themselves! It's very easy to avoid the embarrassment and shame of those license plates on your car. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. There's just never, ever an excuse for it.
