I missed it on the Today show but saw it on FB and plan to dvr the show. It looks interesting. There could be something to it since they even had postage stamps but if they are real why didn't we hear about it years ago. So strange. So many rumors.

Very interesting. First I thought no way they are really reaching until I watched the video. Then I though-Hey there very well might be something to this. Can't wait to see the show on Sunday. Off to set the DVR.

Wasn't her plane set up for spying too? I really don't think it was. My understanding is that it was very, very stripped down to truly bare minimums to make it lighter and thus able to travel farther between refuelings.

I'll be watching the documentary - I find this fascinating.
I have a personal interest in her, I have a picture around here somewhere, she was the Matron of Honor in the wedding for Porter Adams, who is a distant cousin of mine of some sort - I'm hurting my brain trying to remember/figure it out, I think he's the nephew of a great great great grandmother. DD brought in a copy of the photo for school, she had to pick a female women in history and dress up like her and act the part of her at a "social gathering" her teacher held in either 4th or 5th grade, everyone dressed up and walked around pretending to be someone. Anyway Amelia being a pilot was friends with my we'll call him cousin's wife and so she was in the wedding. Porter was the head of the Aeronautical Society at one point which is how they were associated.

I think it's interesting that just in the past few years they've produced evidence that she and her navigator died on Nakamura Island, with evidence of a campsite and bones and glass fragments from her facial lotion bottles as "proof". They even have a picture of what may be her plane on the reef. And now this "proof" that they were captured by the Japanese. I think it's pretty compelling that local stories talk about her. I am looking forward to watching this.

very cool; thanks! I need to remember to set it to record. And can I also just say how cool it is that our community here is so varied and broad that a Pea would have photos of Amelia Earhart in a family wedding, and that another Pea's relative once met her?!? I bet we could find connections to just about anything or anyone if we ask the Peas about it!

I was all set to record--and then I heard an interview on NPR. The man interviewed has done a lot of scholarly research on Amelia. He debunked the story for several reasons. I'll try to remember all that he said. (Interview was on radio in my market on Friday morning before noon.)
#1. The photo has been around with those who study her for at least 18 months, I think he said. He has a copy of the photo and has examined it. He objected to calling it a "new photo just discovered" #2. He says they reversed the photo to make the hairline match Noonan. #3. When she disappeared, she gave lots of May day calls and some "pings" from her plane. The pings went on for 3 days. For the pings to continue that long, they had to be on land where a generator could charge the battery to ping. He thinks they were on an island/sandbar that was covered over with high tides and the ping had to stop. #4. Bones were found many years ago. The British mistakenly identified them as a male and now say they were a female about same height as Amelia.

We are watching it now- the parts with the photos are chilling...and how they did the comparisons. That leaves it very open. This show is similar to the Finding Hilter series that we have also found chilling and fascinating. Also Josh Gates who does Travel channel has done several on her, I'd love to see his reaction to the photo comparisons. He has said that Ameila has been his passion. I just can't figure how they would keep it unexplained for so long and what happened to the plane? After watching part of this she may have landed somewhere.. hmm.
ETA - Dh is reading on twitter that now the photo has been debunked off to do some reading...
I still think my theory is that she could have landed on an island somewhere with trouble, it's what happened after that.

Is anyone else watching tonight? We are and it is fascinating! We thought it was fascinating and tragic too. What was particularly sad was when the US felt they had to let her go rather than let the Japanese know they were able to crack their code. She could have been saved but that would have compromised National Security. Tragic. Btw, I believe eve that was them in the photo.

I am impressed enough by the credentials of the participants to conclude that this is a logical explanation of the events surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator. (In my best Mr. Spock voice) Doesn't surprise me at all that the US would proceed with a back-off and cover-up so as not to compromise national security. We'll see I guess.. looks like the debunkers are in full force but so far, this timeline seems to be holding up to scrutiny. We thought we'd watch an Amelia Earhart movie tonight, I think that one with Hilary Swank. Layce

I can't remember what network it's on (was it History?) but they replay things like this quite often... it may be airing again in the next week or two.

It was on history. A quick search for Earhart through OnDemand found the show. I watched it yesterday and found it interesting. It does offer a very plausible explanation, especially if you have an understanding of the history of that time period.
