Being stuck in traffic on a bridge or overpass when an earthquake hits. This stems from the San Francisco earthquake of 89. The funny thing is, I've been stuck in traffic on the Bay Bridge several times in the last few months, and I've been fine. But at home in Arkansas, where I've never been in an earthquake, I start to panic. I also don't like really tall, multilevel overpasses, especially if they curve. I'm terrified I'll lose control of my car and fly off the side. So I drive slow, but then I worry someone will come up behind me going normal freeway speed and push me off anyway. Way too stressful. Not irrational at all. My parents were in Ghiardelli Square waiting for a cable car in SF for the 89 earthquake. My sister called me in tears saying "MOM AND DAD ARE THERE RIGHT NOW" and I was "HOLY SHIT!!! Are they ok???" We are your average Canadians who spend a couple of weeks a year in the US. We are not locals or anything and to have had my parents in SF at that time was so terrifying.

Being killed in a car wash at night. I figure one car can block me in the front and another in the back and i would have no place to go. I've had the fear since my teens We have a small one-way tunnel under 1-25 close to my house. I always check to make sure there isn't a car behind me before I go in it. Then I speed through it. Weird. I grew up working at the local mall (huge). We had to park in employee parking that was far past the closer parking. I always checked under my car before I walked up to it because some girl had (allegedly) had her ankle slashed so she couldn't run. Before I get into my locked car, I only open my side and then lock it again before I shut the door. The mall made me a cautious beaver!

I have a fear of getting lost and not being able to find where I want to go. I've gotten lost twice, both times outside in the woods. I now will not go into any wooded area where I can not see the parking lot. I won't go on wooded trails, ever. Our place in Florida has woods surrounding it but that's fine - I don't have to go into them and they are within the town so only each 1 block deep. I have dreams where I am walking with a destination in mind and don't make it, forever trying to find my way. This is a huge one for me, but it's also very rational/realistic. I have zero sense of direction - absolutely no internal geography. It's a real problem a lot of the time, because telling me directions means absolutely nothing. I have to have it written or highlighted on a map and even then many times I get confused.
I literally once got lost "in my own back yard." We were just married and lived at the farm until we went back to college. DH was down at the creek and I was wanting to go join him, so started walking through the pasture. Ended up completely unaware of where I was, with no landmarks or buildings visible, and no clue of which way I needed to go. Was terrified I'd be out there all night. It took about an hour for them to realize I was missing, but DH did finally come and rescue me.
(sorry for the tangent )

I'm terrified of being buried alive Me too. I am afraid to drive over long bridges over bodies of water. I am afraid of that too, because I am afraid that for whatever reason the bridge will break and my car will plunge into the water. I am also incredibly fearful of being in a terrible car accident with all four of my kids in the car with me, and not having enough time to get them all out. Thoughts of sliding into a body of water and them drowning, or a drunk driver hitting us and the car catching fire and not being able to get them out freak me out horribly.

I am afraid of falling off the side of a mountain. I've had this fear since childhood. I think it has to do with a trip up a mountain on a snowy day and the wheels spinning. I've also had 2 or 3 dreams where my husband kills us by driving off a mountain. I did fall off a mountain. Not really, but it seemed like it. I was very young. It was our first day of vacation. My brother and I were climbing these huge boulders in the words by the property we always stayed at. When I reached the top, my hand slipped on the slippery grass. I felt myself spinning through space for what felt like forever. My brother ran to get my parents and we went to the doctor for a once over. We went back a different year. When I saw that "mountain" I was like, it's impossible this is the same thing! In reality it didn't measure up to what I had built my experience to be in my imagination.

I have to drive on the Pa turnpike from Pgh. going to Maryland and it's very curvy, lots of trucks, mountainous, and always foggy. Terrifying! We took my daughter back to college after winter break and drove through fog there and back. The year before we hit bad fog going a back way and I decided we were staying in a hotel!

My most constant fear is that I'm going to walk into a public bathroom and find someone who has overdosed. It becomes more and more rational around here by the day sadly. It seriously makes me anxious amd sad anytime I have to use the facilities anywhere.

Can't leave the bedroom closet door open. When I get up in the middle of the night to pee, I don't turn on any lights and I can't look in the mirror over the sink.

I am a Type I diabetic and have been getting shots and home blood tests my entire life, but if I go to the doc to get blood drawn or a shot, I have to take something really strong to calm me. My "fight or flight" kicks in if I'm not medicated and I have also been known to pass out cold. It is so ridiculous and irrational since I do shots and blood at home every single day, but doctors terrify me.

Deep water far from shore. I'm a good swimmer and have been on the water my whole life, but I hate jumping off a boat in deep water, far from shore. I'm not sure if it is a fear of not knowing how far down the bottom is, or a fear that I am too far to swim to shore. Oh, this too! Also afraid of dark water. As a kid i was scared of the beach at night and wouldn't go near the water.

It was a mess. They wanted to get gas for their car later and there were no service stations open. My dad drives with the gas light on and drove my mother and I crazy. I think they came home a week early, too. I lived in Edmonton at the time this happened. I was really scared until I heard from them.

It seriously makes me anxious amd sad anytime I have to use the facilities anywhere. That is happening all the time here unfortunately. It's more in parkades (parking garages downtown, though). Too many people are overdosing and it's a daily thing for our city. They have all first responders carrying Narcan now and if you know someone who is a user I think you can carry it on your person if you know someone at risk. It's an effing nightmare.

It's an epidemic. We all have Nathan, I've had to use it 3x and the town closest to me had 8 overdoses in a 24 hour period with a population of 25k. 2 deaths in the jail yesterday. It's just awful everywhere.

The good news or better news is we have a new government forming and there is going to be a Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and he/she will be responsible for getting rehab for people who want/need it. I really hope this takes off. The drugs are getting into my country fairly easily, too. You hear of a $3M drug bust but what about all the other ones that haven't happened. We have Carfetnyl which is to anesthetize an elephant. It's made in China and 100x stronger than morphine and 2 grains of if it can kill a user. How is it getting in? Border control. When we got home from China we got our luggage and I did not see a drug sniffing dog anywhere. Are people just walking off the plane with it on their person? It's getting in somehow.

bridges over water also...and wind. I live in AZ, so we are not exactly in the path of tornadoes or hurricanes. We do get some pretty damaging winds from microbursts though. I realize those fears can be valid, but I think I am overboard in my concern.

I am afraid to drive over long bridges over bodies of water. I fear I will suddenly turn the wheel of the car sharply and careen off the side. Totally this. I particularly hate it when I am a passenger in a car driving over bridges...and am inevitably having to watch other cars zooming by going the speed of light where it would take one little bobble and I am heading over the side and totally not having any kind of control because I AM NOT DRIVING. I won't even tell you the great lengths I drive to avoid the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. *shudder*

Driving. I don't drive if I don't have to. Literally. I was thrown from a car right after high school. Haven't since. Which is kinda funny cause my brother was the one driving he fell asleep at the wheel. We were going to Disneyland after graduation. Never made it there. We walked away from it sort of. I had serious leg injuries since I landed sitting up in a bush. Oh and my fingers were bloodied from my hand breaking the glass. I don't remember any of that fortunately. I don't tell the story very often unless people press me about why I don't drive. It is quite a story though. We were VERY lucky. He broke his hand grabbing the window. He's never forgiven himself for it. I also very rarely sit in the back sit. I was in the backseat and went out the window. I was asleep or it would have been very bad for me.
My other fear is just being in the pitch black. And rodents-mostly mice I will cover my ears, anything it just sends me in shivers! Won't even watch them on tv. lol!

On the freeway, I fear that when I am passing (or being passed by) a semi, that the car will be sucked under the rig.
When I was a young girl, my cousin (one year older) told me that motorcycle riders would go out of their way to try and run you over. I was afraid of motorcycles for years...if not decades.
When I was a young girl, we lived very close to a city park. My mom was walking my sister and I to the wading pond in the park. She was holding us both by hand. She always told me that bees are more afraid of us than we are of them and that if we left them alone, they would leave us alone. Well, as we were walking across the baseball diamond, I saw a bee in the grass. I planted my feet and would not move or say anything. I was NOT going to upset that bee. Mom was pulling my arm and I would not budge or say a word. Wouldn't you know it? The bee walked up to me and stung me on my foot! I left him alone, but he certainly did NOT leave me alone. I was panic stricken by the sight of a bee or a very, very long time. Again, decades.
And then there are earwigs. I think one of my brothers told me they would crawl in your ear and lay eggs. They still give me the creeps. I do not panic at them outdoors. But if I see one in the house, DH has to go into hero mode and take care of it for me post haste.

I was afraid of the dark until well into adulthood. Victim of an overactive imagination combined with a love of horror novels and movies. I couldn't calmly turn out the light and walk to my bed and get in. I had to turn it off then quickly jump into bed so nothing could grab my feet from under the bed. Same reason I can't sleep with my feet hanging over the side of the bed. I don't do the run and jump thing any longer but feet over the edge gets to me sometimes still. Me too. I used to wish I had an arm extension to turn the overhead light on and off when I was a kid. When my husband works late I sleep with the light on til he comes home. It's ridiculous.

Vomit. Not just in a "Yuck, that's disgusting" way, but full blown panic attack if someone around me vomits - or even if I think they might. I've managed to control it better over the past 5 years or so, but there was a time where going to a pub or a train or on a plane was a hugely stressful experience. Interestingly, whilst I absolutely panic, I can *just* deal with it if it's one of my kids. Can't deal with DH though. Can't even deal with it if it's me! Fortunately we're about the least puke-y family I know. I haven't vomited for 12 years, 6 months. I know precisely, because my youngest was 10 days old at the time and getting up and down off the bathroom floor with caesarean stitches was not easy!!! Now I'll be worried that I've jinxed myself and will get sick now....

Snakes. When I was a young teen my sister and I were very close to being bitten by a rattlesnake while on a youth church camping trip. Since then she and I both have a snake phobia.
