I have some garage cabinets open and want to overflow some craft/scrapbook items and make a little space in my craft room. I'm thinking idea books, yarn, maybe buttons. But am wondering if there are some other things that would be a good fit for that space that wouldn't be damaged by a less than ideal temperature.

I think it would depend on your climate.
In a dry climate, paper and metal (like dies and tools) might fare okay, but in a humid climate the paper would probably pick up moisture and metal would rust. I honestly can't really think of anything that I'd want to intentionally store there, though. I'd rather take over a closet and pack up winter jackets or infrequently used linens (maybe in vacuum sealed bags) and banish those things to the garage. I think of the 'my precious' meme from Lord of the Rings in terms of my scrappy stuff. The few things I keep out there are things I haven't felt compelled to find room for since my remodel (mostly things I can't bring myself to get rid of but obviously don't use). I would even worry about yarn long term because of the risk of bugs being able to eat at the fibers.

Our garage is insulated and has walls, however I put my extra craft stuff in Rubbermaid bins. I felt that added a layer of protection plus they were easy to label the contents.

I would stick to the items you listed I wouldn't trust anything else not getting damaged by heat or cold.

I'll see how this works out - but agree that the humidity and heat are huge factors - can't risk that.

My garage isn't even lined (except the roof) so I wouldn't put anything scrappy out there. I know there are silverfish as well having seen some old paper getting eaten.

Just be sure hubby doesn't decide to clean the garage one day when you're not there.
When labeling the boxes (I vote Rubbermaid or other brand bins) write NANA2CALLIE'S STUFF - DO NOT DISCARD.
Trust me on this.
