My husband used to travel to China for business a lot. He has a lot of cool stamps in his passport. We have to send it in to be renewed and I have no idea if he will get the original book back. He's kind of loathe to give up the book, if not.
Anyone know?

Yes!!!!
I was sad to turn mine in for renewal, but they mailed it back several weeks later with a hole in it!
ETA: I have a Chinese visa in mine and lots of stamps, so I was really happy to get my old passport back!

We got ours back. I think they punched a hole through it though.
From Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs:
Yes, in most cases, we will return the old, cancelled passport to you. It may be sent separately from your new passport. It is a good idea to keep your old passport in a safe place as it is considered proof of your U.S. citizenship.

Yes, you will get it back with a hole punched in the front cover. They mail it and the new passport separately, so don't be surprised if the old one shows up first.

Just renewed mine before my trip this May and they returned it with a hole punched in it. I didn't realize they did that and also had some cool stamps in mine so before I sent it off I took photos of those pages for scrapbooks I still plan to make. I was very happy when it came back-now I can just tear out those pages and use those instead.

I got the new one about a week before the old one made it back to me. Yes, they return it

No, they did NOT return my old one when I renewed. However, my old one was in my maiden name. So maybe a name change had something to do with it?

I was very happy when it came back-now I can just tear out those pages and use those instead. Even when your passport is expired, I'd be wary about ripping pages out. As seasidemermaid it's considered proof of your citizenship. If you ever need to use an expired passport for that purpose, it has to be undamaged.

Yes. We just renewed ours. The new ones came first and then a few days later our old ones arrived. They had two punched holes in the cover, but we do have them back.

I would imagine you could say that he lost it to keep it undamaged. I did actually lose my old one and found it later on. I can't remember if it cost me any more or not.

I guess I could just photocopy the pages to use in my scrapbook. If my parents hadn't lost my expired passports from my baby and childhood days I'd have more (we moved around constantly when I was a child). The 5 I have are only counting back from when I was 16. I made my first visit to the USA when I was a year old and then we moved back to Germany very soon after that.
