Second thread starter today.. I'm on a role! So I live in a duplex.. the garages are in the middle (but we do share a kitchen wall).. but that isn't the issue... we don't hear too much noise from them and I hope they don't from us. The problem is: We 'share' a driveway. We both have a double garage and our own driveway.. but they are connected. Down the middle is a red brick.. (or more like red cement) but in a 'pretty' design I guess.. so that is the dividing area between the driveways. In 17 years I have lived here, we (as in us and neighbor) have always respected the red cement. We don't park on it so we don't crowd each other out. On occasion it happens no big deal. But now our 'new' neighbors who rent park right on top of it everyday. At first, since they were moving in and out, I didn't care. But now it's been 6-8 months. They still do it. They are older.. (in their 80s I guess) and then a whole slew of friends and family are there ALL the time. ALL have big pickups, work trucks, etc. They all park on top of the red AND right in front of my house in front of my mailbox (which is a public street and I am not bitching about it but I am in my head... but there isn't much I can do about that). AND the old guy will say something like "oh I am parked over a little far, sorry about that" and I will say something like "yeah getting a little crowded around here".. But anyways, it is annoying cause we have to park one car on the driveway. So we park on the side near them so the other car can get out. I could park on the other side but our tree overhangs the driveway and I get bird poo on it and sap sometimes. Then to add, the old guy smokes like a chimney and throws his butts in the street. And guess where they end up at.. In my grass or in the cracks of the driveway. AND the guy was a firefighter all his life.... OYE... and at 80 years old, he isn't changing his ways. OYE. Now today, an old red pickup is directly in front of my yard and mailbox. AND then I am guessing two people who either own it or they are family members are laying on my lawn. SERIOUSLY.. all sprawled out. I am tempted to turn on the sprinklers. Oh and don't get me started on the three dogs that bark day and NIGHT (because they installed a doggie door) OYE again. I don't want to start anything with them cause otherwise they are nice and we are attach to them. I know the owners of the house and they would say something if I brought it up but the renters will know it is us complaining. I don't like confrontations at all. But really people, it's just called manners. I don't know how much more this will go on before I say something. I try to be a good neighbor. I even snowplowed their side of the driveway when it snowed hard. I stay on my side and my dogs don't bark, we don't smoke, have parties (except on occasion which the only time has been this past 4th of July and they weren't even home), keep our side of the house, clean, mowed and poop free.

There's no reason not to mention to them that they are infringing on your property. You can do it kindly and politely. At the same time you could also ask them to please dispose of their cigarette butts properly. Honestly is usually the best policy.

Ugh, ugh, ugh. All of that would drive me right straight up the wall. As much as I'm opposed to confrontation, I would have to have a friendly chat with them about some of this stuff before it totally pushed me over the edge making me go postal. As for the driveway issue, I would just tell them "Hey, we don't mean to be all nit picky but we really do need the full width of our half of the driveway for our own stuff." I'd even be tempted to put a row of flowerpots or something vertical along your side of the red line, as more of a visual barrier they shouldn't cross. As for the asshats on your lawn, I would go out there with the hose and say in a friendly voice, "I need to water out here right now so unless you want a free shower I'd find another place to relax!" Not sure what you can do about the butts in the street or the people parking in front of your mailbox. Maybe try putting a bucket of sand out there on the boulevard for the butts? It would be really frustrating dealing with neighbors who are that clueless.

Is your mail delivered by a mail carrier on foot or in a vehicle? If it is by vehicle, and your box is blocked, they will not get our of the vehicle to put your mail in the box. (I'm pretty sure they are not allowed to do it.) If that is the case, I think you should gently remind them of that rule and ask that they make sure their guests are not blocking your mailbox.
When we lived in Leesburg VA, we were at the end of a cul de sac, so there was very little curb space between driveways on the curve. One winter we had a ridiculous amount of snow (like four feet in one week!), and the snow plows just shoved the snow anywhere they could, which meant we had a MOUNTAIN of snow in front of our driveway. My husband shoveled a path to the box, which the best he could do because there was NO WHERE else to put it LOL. We still weren't getting mail, and when I called the post office, we were informed that we had to pick it up. It took well over a week before the snow was melted enough to get delivery.
As for the rest of the behaviors, I think it is best to bring it up gently now and risk a few hurt feelings than to let this fester until it becomes a much bigger deal than it has to be.

It is delivered and they will get out of their truck and put it in the mailbox. Randy, the mailman, is awesome. We have a huge neighborhood and he can almost tell you where each family lives! love the guy! Anyways, he will leave a postcard in the mailbox if he sees regulars doing that. I could catch him next time and ask him to put a postcard in neighbor's mailbox.. .. Regarding Randy.. once I received a box and I happened to be out and stopped to talk to him. He recognized the box (design) from our old neighbors (not duplex, but just in neighborhood) because they have a home business and moved out of state.. they mailed us something and he goes.. well that box is Jim's.. where did Jim go? LOL...

It's legal to park on the public street but illegal to park in front of mailboxes ( at least here ) So yeah that would bother me because the mail carrier would not deliver. So I'd also mention that.
And yes my sprinkler switch is inside so I might just think about turning it on depending on how crabby I felt - if they said anything I could blame the timer. But most likely I wouldn't have the guts to do it.

Only 1 of the 3 cares if the mail is even in the right box, so they'd definitely skip delivering.

So postcards get put in the box to gently remind people not to do it. I can't swear this time if the truck was there before or after mail delivery. But like I said... our mailman is great and gets out of his truck. I wish I would have thought of the sprinklers at the time... I might have done it! Maybe... sorta.. ummmm..

I would be irked too. Go over with a plate of cookies or bowl of cherries (since they are in season) and just talk to them. When you bring food as a offering things seem to go smoother. Keep us updated. Jen

That would bother me too.
How weird about the people lying on your grass. And the cigarette butts would disgust me.
Sorry you have to deal with that.

They are still doing it because they think it is okay. It sucks, but nothing is going to magically change unless you tell them nicely how the shared spaced and your space need to be respected. When we first moved here, our neighbors teenagers parked in front of our house and their friends would all gather to work on their cars. I didn't realize DH had been picking up their fast food garbage every morning until he complained one day. I suggested he talk to them, but instead he decided to put the garbage on their front step. It took a couple of days, but the garbage problem was resolved. Good luck. SaveSaveSaveSave

Forget to say, the same teenagers started sitting around on our lawn when spring came with longer daylight hours. Again, we didn't realize it at first because we hung out at the back and opposite side of the house. DH decided to test the sprinkler system and figure out which valves control which zones.

Good neighbors are priceless! I'm surprised they're getting away with parking in front of your mailbox - our carrier rips into anyone who does that. And he will refuse to deliver mail! This might be another thread for another day Use him for an excuse and tell neighbors to cut it out. Good luck!

Have you spoken to them much before? I don't think it hurts to go over there and meet them, chat about some other stuff and ask something along the lines of "We've noticed XYZ, do you think this is going to be consistently happening? We haven't had this happen in the past and are struggling to get used to it. Can we make some compromises?"

Regarding the cigarette buts - -give the old guy a bandaid tin with a shower hook on it to hang on his belt. Show him how he can put a little sand it and have a portable ash tray. Let him know you don't like cigarette butts in your yard and driveway but are wanting to help with the issue. Perhaps a sign by your mailbox asking people not to park there might help as well. Many people are so clueless, they need reminders of how to be polite.
