I've lost toe nails from running, usually the ones next to the big one. It actually takes quite a while for them to grow back completely. I can't give a better amount of time than that because I'm not sure.

Yes, happened to me once. I can't remember how long it took to grow back. My sympathy.

It won't hurt like it does now once it falls off, so that's good news at least. Ouch.
They take a number of months to grow back.

I just wonder about the sensitivity of the toe once the nail is gone to protect it? Will probably keep it wrapped for quite some time!

I lost my big toe nail when I was about four years old after a can of peas fell on it. It seemed like it took forever to grow back. Maybe 3 or 4 months in adult time?

I just wonder about the sensitivity of the toe once the nail is gone to protect it? Will probably keep it wrapped for quite some time! It hurts right now because the nail part that is still attached is "alive" so to speak, and the tissue it is attached to is also alive. Once it falls off, all that dries up pretty well and almost gets a little callus on it - it won't feel so tender, and part of what hurts is that the nail is moving and tugging on that flesh on your toe. If you can leave it uncovered, it will probably dry faster and fall off faster, but I don't know without seeing it. For me, the pain stops once the nail and I part ways. Hope that's true for you too.

How did you lose your nail? Mine were always a gradual process. It would loosen up and then work it's way down for weeks and then by summer's end it would come off. I have one doing that now. There was not a lot of soreness when it came off. Hopefully yours will heal up fast and I would guess it will become a bit of a nonissue after that.

DD informed me just last week that the big toenail grows at a rate of less than 2mm a month. Measure the existing one once it comes off and that should give you an idea of how long it will take to grow back!

Big toenail will take 6-8 months to grow back. The nailbed is somewhat tough, so it won't be like tender skin. You can also get glue-on toenails and glue one on to protect the nailbed and have it not look so bad. I lost a big toenail and kept using glue on nails until it had grown back enough not to look scary.

I agree, the pain is worse while it is hanging there than it is when you finally can take it all off. I lost my pinky toenail. I don't remember it taking terribly long to grow back, but since it is a much smaller nail, it probably took less time. Good luck, I think the thought is much worse than the actual pain once it is off.

I have had some yellowing of the nail and at first contributed it to always wearing dark polish and it was stained. Then last few weeks noticed it seemed "loose" like separating from the bed. Yesterday I stubbed it and it came much looser..and is really sore. I have it wrapped to "hold it down" so it wouldn't catch and tear. Wondering if warrants a Dr visit?

Took about a year for me to grow back, after I lost one by running a marathon.

I lost both big toe nails after hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It took over a year for them to grow back. The nail bed toughened up after about a week and didn't need wrapping.

I've lost pinky nails before and it took awhile to grow. A couple of months. Big toe nails take closer to a year.

I lost 4 toenails doing the exact same thing. I thought it was because my boots were slightly too small but maybe it was just all of the hiking on a decline.
