I have no plans to participate in the ice bucket challenge - although I do feel the ALS foundation is certainly a worthy cause and am happy to see them get the donations they are getting.
My issue with donations to most charities is how much they then pester me for MORE money. I wonder if they don't spend more money trying to get me to donate again. A simple yearly request is fine, but it becomes much more than that. I know they sold my info to other groups also.
I was burned on PBS and Red Cross. I wanted to support them and gave them donations, but I spent years getting mail and phone calls from them for MORE money. It was to the point that I stopped all donations to them and every other charity. I only give local now and as anonymous. I generously support my local volunteer fire departments, school fundraisers, families in need, and other area projects.
If I gave $10 or $100 to ALS, will I be under a constant barrage for more more more? Will they then in turn sell my info so others can start the calls and mail too?

That's a good point. Would donating by money order avoid that? Of course, that means a hassle of getting the money order but at least it might avoid further requests for more.

I was thinking the same thing. I really want to donate and printed out the form, but sure do not want any charity to have my name and address.

Unfortunately I haven't yet met a charity that doesn't ask for more. Which like you I wouldn't mind once a year but the constant barrage if calls is totally unacceptable
