I have a stovetop kettle but if I'm only making one cup I microwave the water. If I'm making a pot of tea I'll use the kettle. I remember going to a scrap retreat and my friend called the owner to tell them they didn't have a kettle and would need one asap. Add if they didn't have a microwave or a pot. I mean I could see if you were living there permanently but in a weekend situation that's where I'd just make do.

I use a kettle everyday to make coffee (drip method directly into cup). I recently purchased an electric one I love - ELECTRIC KETTLE. It is fast, energy efficient (replaced my stove top one used on electric range) and cool looking!

But would I know the difference between tea made with water boiled in a kettle and water boiled in the microwave? I doubt it. I beg to differ, water 'boiled' in a microwave is flat and revolting. I can not imagine life without a kettle. SaveWell...I have no doubt that *other* people might know the difference... but would I? That was my question.... So, if I boil my water in a saucepan (since I don't own a kettle) would that work for my taste comparison?

That doesn't happen in a microwave. Sorry I came across all bossy British lady with a kettle

I own a kettle and use it quite a lot. It stays full of water on my stovetop and I use it to boil water when I wash dishes, for the netipot, mop water, etc. Honestly, we don't drink a lot of tea, so I rarely use it for that.
Before I had a kettle, I just boiled water on the stove in a regular pan.

ETA: Kettle as in electric tea pot? I think that's what you mean. They're not called electric tea pots here, but I assume we're talking about the same thing! This is what I mean by kettle: Mine is the red one in the bottle left corner. mine is second from the left in the bottom row

I have both a kettle and egg cups. But in full disclosure both my Mom & Dad immigrated from Scotland. So that is probably why I do...

Electric kettle for recipes mainly. Although I bought it when we were living on the island in the Caribbean, mainly to use in case we needed to heat water for showers. We stored water for days when they would turn the water off because the drought there. Yes, they would turn the water off for the entire house for 24 hours at a time (some areas got water turned off for 48 hours or more). Luckily, the house had a pool, so that served for bathroom water. Big pain carrying in buckets of water to store by the toilets.
Coffee machine for coffee, and usually I'll make 'sun tea' without boiling any water.

Yes, we use a kettle---multiple times per day. In fact, we need to go buy a new kettle, because recently our back-up kettle kicked the bucket and we realized that we never bothered to replace the first kettle that kicked the bucket and so now we are using a Christmas kettle, LOL!!! I'm just pretending it's Christmas in July. So yeah, time to go kettle shopping. Oh, and we're in the US. And it takes very little time for our stove to bring a few cups of water to boiling which is why we've not previously bothered with an electric one. Besides, making tea is a bit of a process, and DH likes the process. So I doubt he cares if the electric kettle shaves a minute off of the overall process. He's the official tea brewer here. The rest of us just drink it. Save

Yes, I have an electric kettle. I use it tons in the winter, not so much when it's hot out. It does stay out all the time, though, and I do love it!

I use the microwave!!! #noshame #myenglishbreakfastteaistainted NO! NO! Whatever you are drinking does not resemble what tea drinkers are drinking!! I confess, there was a time in my life when I thought my mother was being a picky SOB for saying microwave hot water did not do the job. Then, we were in a kitchen remodel and I boiled the water in the microwave. BLECH! The physics of the process does something to the water and it does not brew properly and affects the taste. My mother was in her grave and could not hear my deep apologies. If you are convinced I am a nut case, do a taste test yourself. I agree wholeheartedly! My husband and I argue about this all the time. His argument is the microwave is quicker. The day we bought the stove top tea kettle, he griped because we did not need it. It was a waste of money because we had a microwave. The boy wanted one. Since he doesn't ask for much, I bought it. We, the boy & I, use the tea kettle all the time. The microwave changes the taste.

The tea doesn't stay hot as long when you microwave the water. It's hot one minute and cold the next---well, it seems that way, anyway. But when you take the time to boil the water and warm the cups, the tea stays hot or at least very warm for a long time.

Yes, it's standard equipment in New Zealand kitchens

It's faster to heat water in the microwave. Ah but speed isn't everything when making tea here and water boiled in the microwave to make tea just doesn't taste the same Totally agree. Water from the microwave isn't heated at the right temperature for tea.

we have a teakettle, but I don't think I've ever actually USED it for anything, lol! It pretty much just sits on the stove as part of the kitchen decor. I think it reminds my boyfriend of his Grandma's house, perhaps because she used to have one. But since neither of us drink coffee or tea, it's more decoration than useful.

It's very quick. You wouldn't need both but the majority of Brits have one, probably far more than have stove top ones I'd guess. I don't know anyone that has a stove top kettle anymore. My grandmother used to have one years ago when I was a child that whistled but even she ended up with an electric one eventually. I don't know anyone who has a stove top kettle anymore either. We had one in the 70's but once the electric ones came out that was the end of the stove top kettle in this country! I love, love my pink SMEG kettle Ooooh yes I have my eye on the Smeg kettle as well, even though my red Russell Hobbs is only a about a year old. I can't decide between the pink, blue or green Smeg. It depends on what colour splashback we get in our new kitchen. It has to match/complement that!

I have a microwave to hear up water if needed.
I don't like hot drinks, except hot chocolate so no need for a kettle

I don't have a kettle. I either run water thru my coffee pot for tea or boil it in a pot on the stove.

No kettle here (no egg cups either, although DH's parents had some). I don't drink coffee or tea of any kind. DH makes coffee in an electric coffeemaker. The smell of his coffee brewing in the morning is enough to make me hurl. If I want a hot chocolate (which is also pretty rare), I'll heat the milk in the microwave. I generally don't like hot drinks.

well my "drip coffee" is made in a... gasp... drip coffee maker... have never owned a kettle and never will - i've never had to boil water to wash dishes unless i was camping and i've never heard of boiling water to mop... i guess i need to get out more, but the only person i ever knew with a kettle was my grandma who used it to make instant coffee...

I would have a stove top kettle, but in this house that we've lived in for 20 years we have well water and because of this we don't drink the water that comes out of the faucet. Instead we have a water delivery service that brings us 5 gallon jugs of bottled water that we then put on top of a water cooler. This cooler dispenses both hot and cold water. I make coffee in a french press. When I need hot water for it the water comes out of the water cooler already hot.
I used electric water kettles in the two airbnb's I recently stayed in while in Poland and Germany. I thought they were very handy and heated up fast.
We plan on selling out house within the next 3-5 years. I hope the next house has city water. If so I'll be buying a stove top kettle then.

That's a very good point. My father who is in my eyes a coffee perfectionist has always said to me that the proper cup of coffee must be made with water that has come to a rolling boil. Maybe the time for me to invest in a stove top kettle is now? I told him on the phone the other day I was going to reheat my cup of coffee in the microwave and he said, "Yuck, don't do that. Coffee is cheap. Make another cup."

Another one that had a stove top kettle but rarely used it so we donated it. We don't drink tea very often and if we did we would just heat water in the microwave, stove top in a pan or use the Keurig.
