In a shameless spin off of librarylady 's egg cup thread, I have my own question: Do you own a kettle? I remember reading something a few months ago that people in the US don't have kettles. Then on the thread that LibraryLady posted, the link showed this tweet, which pretty much summed up my thoughts: For those who don't have a kettle, how do you make a coffee or a cup of tea? I guess coffee is an easy one, you must just use a coffee machine or percolator or something. But tea? Or anything that requires boiling water?

I do own a kettle, but I've gotten out of the habit of using it and just boil water in a pot when I'm making tea.

I don't own a kettle, but I rarely drink tea. I missed the egg cup thread, but I'm wondering why it's weird not NOT own those. ETA: Kettle as in electric tea pot? I think that's what you mean.

I have a stove top kettle and an electric kettle. I'm an America married to a Brit. I prefer tea, he prefers coffee.

I'm a coffee drinker but don't use a coffee machine. I use a kettle to boil water for my drip coffee pot. DH and some of our visitors like tea occasionally so it gets used for that too. As well as when I need boiling water for a recipe or something. My kettle gets used all the time.

We don't have a kettle, but we do have a Keurig. It makes hot water, which we use for tea. Or add a pod to make coffee. The water for the tea just comes out as hot water and we add a tea bag or tea leaves to that. It takes about 90 seconds tops to get a cup of hot water for tea.

I have a stovetop kettle as I like tea. I have mochamaster, a nespresso, and a Keurig for coffee and lattes.

Have a tea kettle and use it every day.
It is stovetop. I purchased an electric one, but did not want to give up my counter space to another item.

I do own a kettle, but we now make our tea using the Keurig. We have an ancient Wolf range that the pilot lights are always on. I leave the kettle on the stove with the lid open to act as a humidifier.

ETA: Kettle as in electric tea pot? I think that's what you mean. They're not called electric tea pots here, but I assume we're talking about the same thing! This is what I mean by kettle: Mine is the red one in the bottle left corner.

My Dad was the tea drinker at home and he had an electric kettle as far back as I can remember. I'll be 40 this year. I remember them at both my grandparents homes as kids also. Until a few years ago I never seen a stove top kettle until they came out with colourful retro ones. I've always had an electric kettle also.

Or anything that requires boiling water? I got a kettle for a wedding present, but rarely used it, so I eventually gave it away. DH doesn't always drink coffee, but when he does I use the coffee maker. I'm not a tea drinker (it never tastes as good as it smells), but when I make it for DD, I used to heat up the water in the coffee maker or the microwave. However, she has been shown the proper way to make tea, so (if she's watching) I'll heat up the water in a small pan on the stove, heat up her little ceramic tea pot, and steep the tea properly.

If it's electric, we (the Americans) call it an electric kettle. Otherwise, a kettle for us can be used on the stove. Of course I have a kettle, but I just cannot justify an electric kettle when I have a regular kettle and a microwave.

I had one in college, but now I use either a stove top kettle, a microwave, a Keurig, or a boiling water dispenser, depending where I am at the time.

Of course I have a kettle, but I just cannot justify an electric kettle when I have a regular kettle and a microwave. To the average American, a kettle is the old fashioned kind you use on the stove top to boil the water. I've had electric kettles when we've been overseas and like them just fine. However I have a professional stove that boils water quickly in my kettle that whistles. I like hearing that whistle! It works great and I don't want to give up counter space for another appliance. It's really not difficult to boil a kettle of water! DD has a very nice Breville electric kettle/tea maker. We used it when she lived with us and it just ate up too much of my limited counter space. It does work very well though! For coffee I use a drip coffee maker while DH will boil water (in our stove top kettle) to make espresso in a French press.

I had to look up the word kettle to see what you were asking. Yes, we have a tea kettle. We never called it anything. Instead, it was...Do you want tea? Proceed to heat water and wait for the whistle. We have one because the boy wanted it. I can't remember what brand it is. But, I do remember it was ridiculously expensive. Originally, I was thinking he could take it with him when he goes. However, I have gotten very fond of tea since we bought the kettle. Why would one need an electric one?

We had a kettle but dh left it on when it was empty and it got destroyed. We didn't use it often so I have t replaced it. Dh makes coffee with a French press and we just boil water in pan on the stove.

I've always owned an electric kettle but I was raised by tea drinking Brits. What I don't own anymore is a teapot. Now I just make my tea directly in my mug although I do heat up the mug first so it's not as bad as it could be.

Why would one need an electric one? It's very quick. You wouldn't need both but the majority of Brits have one, probably far more than have stove top ones I'd guess.
