I've been thinking about the way we tend to identify people by what they do for work. Occupations, job titles, careers - it amazes me how people let that shape their identity. So I'm curious. If someone asked you 'what do you do', and you weren't allowed to go by the title of your job, how would you answer them? For me, workwise: I make sure people can communicate to, and work with, each other easily and effectively, in their companies and in their private life. Volunteering: I cook very large amounts of food and serve them to others

I am entrusted to help young people learn how to read and foster their love of books, how to have fun and understand math, learn about the world around them, and learn how to interact with other people in a kind and loving way. I am also the recipient of hugs and love on a daily basis. 💕💕💕

I take care of people who are ill or injured. Some of them are appreciative. Some of them yell at me or try to hit me. I'm on vacation and not ready to go back, can you tell?

beepdave So, there's a design for something, you take it, and in the end it actually exists? Yes indeedy! I've taken scribbles on a napkin and turned it into a whole marketing plan, including print pieces and a website! Fun times! I'm also the resident font identifier and grammar guru/proofreader of all things. ;-)

I manage billions of dollars sent into the state for taxes, I ensure they are all recorded by the proper tax type and sent to the state treasury on a daily basis so they can invest the money. In addition, I ensure that all state taxpayers that are due refunds (corporations, retailers, individuals, etc.) receive their refunds timely and they are 100% accurate. I also ensure that we don't overspend our operations (labor, utilities, supplies, etc) by the allotted annual state funding received. I prepare monthly and annual reports for the state governor's office.

I oversee the retail and wholesale sales for a small eco-friendly kitchen and home manufacturing business. I also manage every other aspect of their US business including production orders and imports, domestic shipping, maintain the website, banking and AP/AR, customer service, and wholesale customer relations. Some days I feel like I'm herding cats with all the various tasks that come up.

First I stopped asking the question a few years ago because someone who moved to my city pointed out to me that was the first question she got asked by everyone she met here. I only ask that question is someone asks me first and I hate it when someone replies with "I'm a consultant". I get that a lot. It tells me absolutely nothing about what industry you're in or what exactly you do.

I coordinate and document the training for all (approx. 150) employees in our nutritional product manufacturing facility. 'Coordinate and document' can mean giving training presentations, tracking % training completed, updating employee training requirements, data entry, etc. (basically it's a lot of computer data entry work and shuffling / filing paperwork.)
ETA: I also have come to dislike that question, because "what do you do?" is 'what I do to get a paycheck' and does not necessarily define me as a person.

I alter genes in mouse stem cells and mouse embryos. I put the altered products back into mice and breed them, creating mutant mice. These mutant mice are then used to study gene function, disease, and disease therapies.

I interact with my company's employees and guide them on how to file for reimbursements, promote to a new position, recognize their work anniversary, pay them when they refer a new employee and calculate their quarterly bonus and whatever else doesn't fall under someone else's job scope.
