We leave in 2 weeks for a cruise and I would like to purchase a waterproof camera to use on the water related excursions. I have an iPhone 7 but I don't trust it to be safe in a waterproof pouch.
The Amazon recs are all over the place, so I am looking for "real life" recommendations. I would like to keep the cost under $150 if possible.
Thanks!

We have a Kodak PlaySport which I think takes great photos and videos. DH has a GoPro and loves it but is more than your budget. We were at Costco on Saturday and noticed they had something similar to the Kodak camera (can't remember the brand right now) so you might check there.

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC6 and it is great. I wanted one that could be a "normal" camera that took good shots as well as underwater ones. The great thing as well is it is a tough camera so good for any outdoors stuff. We probably don't take a great deal actually underwater (great shots though) but more for when fishing, kayaking etc where you may get the camera wet.

I've had 3 waterproof P&S cameras and I haven't loved any of them. I can't offer any suggestions on what to get, but I can say what not to get! My first one was a Panasonic Lumix, I can't remember the model (it would be obsolete anyway). It was a pretty good camera but the pictures weren't as good quality as the other non-waterproof Canon P&S I had at the same time. When that one died I bought a Canon PowerShot D10. The pictures were OK, but again not as good as my other non-waterproof Canon P&S. It didn't have the speed burst that the Lumix had, and I really missed that functionality. When that one died (the waterproof cameras don't seem to last as long as other P&S) I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT30GN . I bought it at the last minute the night before we were going to the snow. The pictures are average at best and the video is terrible quality. I wouldn't recommend this one at all. Good luck in your search, and I'd love to know what you end up buying.

I have an Olympus TG-4 and love it. I bought a floating handle for it for when I'm snorkeling, just in case. Lots of options or just put it on auto and let it go. There's an underwater setting that is easy to set. Great pics, easy to use, lightweight - I can't say enough good things about this camera. Whatever you get, buy a second battery for it - nothing is worse than being somewhere on vacation and having your battery die. I always have a second fully charged battery with me.

I've had Nikon, Canon, Panasonic Lumix, and Olympus "tough/waterproof" cameras. I would have been better off buying disposable waterproof cameras because non lasted more than two years. My favorite out of the four was the Nikon. However, none of them shoot in RAW format. I went ahead a bought a waterproof housing for my Sony A6300. I'm taking it to the beach next week for its first run knowing that it is fully insured if the housing leaks.

I just bought a Fujifilm xp120 to take on our trip to Mexico next week. I haven't tested it underwater yet, but I did a lot of research before buying. It was the best for my price range. I paid about $150. Costco had a bundle with the camera, float strap, and a memory card and Best Buy price matched.
The Olympus were also well reviewed, but they are about 3x more.

I have a water housing for my Canon A540 that I've had FOREVER. It takes great pictures.
My friend just went to hawaii and bought a vivitar underwater camera. She LOVES it.

I have a Canon like this and the photos are amazing! That's the one that I mentioned I had and the photos were OK but not as good as my non-waterproof older model Canon P&S. It was the best of the 3 waterproof cameras that I've had. This is an example of the pictures I took at the snow last year. The first picture is with the Panasonic Lumix waterproof and the second picture is with my Canon DSLR. You can see just how crappy the photos are with the waterproof Lumix. They can be improved a bit with Photoshop.

I bought one from Amazon right before our trip to Punta Cana. It was awful. Can't remember the name, but no one has mentioned it yet. I was refunded my money when the water got in the battery area.
I did want to mention that people on the beach were using their iPhones in waterproof cases like crazy. And their pictures looked so much better than the waterproof cameras I have used. Someone mentioned getting the cases for the iPhones at Walmart. I will definitely be getting one after so many people I met said they loved using their phone. The picture quality, brightness, and ease of using the phone was what most people mentioned. Just wanted to throw that our there. People on our snorkel trip were sharing some of them and they were definitely better than the waterproof camera pictures.

I bought a Kodak (yes, Kodak!!) Easyshare about five years ago and it worked great.
I don't know if i can even find it now so I did not use it much. It was good for what we needed it for, whitewater rafting, etc, plus I bought some "floaty thing" (bright yellow) that we attached to it so that if you dropped it in the water it would float and you could hopefully catch it.
So consider that the camera doesn't have to last forever and won't be used over and over unless you do a lot of watersports, etc often.

It may be cheaper to buy an underwater housing for any point and shoot you already own (and love) then to buy a new camera.
When I dive, I use my Canon G11 in an underwater housing made by Canon (approximately $140 when I got it years ago).
I've also heard good things about the Nikon Coolpix W100 White, waterproof to 33ft.

I got a Fuji at Best Buy before my trip to Roatan. Worked great and it's good up to 60 ft.
