A couple weeks ago my friend pulled the sheets back in her hotel room and it too had blood through to the mattress. The hotel claimed they had no more rooms and would not refund her. It was midnight and they handed her sheets. She had to call corporate also to complain. They reimbursed her for the room. That was pretty much my exact experience. I didn't try to leave the night because I already knew that the town was booked because there was a race in town (kansas city) and everything was full. Similar experience. They did send a maid down to change the bloody sheets, however. Then the lock on our door quit working. They gave us a new key card, no luck. They said the lock needed to be changed but the maintenance man was out of town. This is a resort hotel, in a resort town during their busy season on a tourist weekend. The claimed they had no way of getting us back in our room, where all our stuff was including our car keys. I asked for the manager. He was on vacation and was refusing to take their calls. Finally Someone decided they would try to dismantle the door. We there with a group for a tournament and it was our sightseeing night, and we missed the entire outing and it was the only sightseeing opportunity we had. About 10 pm they got us in our room after 3 hours of standing in the parking lot being offered no other accommodations. Between that and the bloody sheets I asked for a refund and was refused and told we would be physically removed from the property by police if we mentioned the bloody sheets to anyone. We were there with a group and there were no other local vacancies. They also threatened my teenage son when he defended me when they called me a liar. And so much more. I never even so much as raised my voice when talking to the staff. I let them think they were intimidating me. There were 2 staff members who stood in the background looking appalled. One followed me out and gave me the owners name and number. I assured her I had it covered. As as soon as we checked out, before we even pulled out of the property I started a long, detailed review that told it all. I posted it on multiple sites. Our drive home was 3 hours. Before we even got home the owner was calling me and apologizing. Apparently the staff denied my story except the two staff members who sympathized with me. They sang like canaries and backed up everything I said. He told me the blood on the sheets was a hygiene issue that could get him closed down. I was given a full refund for both nights we were there and a 30% off discount for a future stay. Nice as that was, we will never return.

It makes me want to take the sheets off the bed and put them in the floor every time I check out of a hotel. Force them to put on new sheets. I did this for years until we started staying at Hilton properties.

I wrote here not too long ago about driving 5 or 6 hours with my little kids alone, one of which was a baby, and checked in late to find crustt, dirty sheets. It was a Hilton Garden Inn. There were no managers, but the front desk girl helped me change sheets. I had planned on just writing a review on Trip Advisor, but with several issues I had with the maid, I finally pulled a manager aside and complained. Almost the entire stay (5nights?) was refunded. I didn't write a review because he fixed it. I should say I don't usually consider the sheets unclean if I find a head hair. 95% of the maids I have personally encountered have long black hair, so if/when I find one, I give it a pass. I know I find my own hair all over my house and on stuff I touch, like laundry, so I almost expect to find an occasional hair. But short and wirey, and pube-like? Barf.

It was a small, family owned hotel and the owner seemed sincere in correcting the issues from within and I trust he did. If you plan on staying in petoskey, mi in the near future PM me and I'll give you a name. But in light of his reassurances that he was taking care of the situation I'm not comfortable naming the hotel publically on the board.
