I never drink from any glasses in hotel rooms and I have been sticking my head in the sand when it comes to sheets. Going to be really hard to do this any more. I feel like I need to start asking for fresh sheets that have been packaged after laundering when I check into a hotel. I will make the bed myself. Gross.

This doesn't have a gross factor for me unless they can somehow prove the sheets aren't changed for new guests. That is exactly what they proved.

Oh... I already have bed bug issues. I won't let anyone in the room until I do a good check for them.

Beyond gross! I do wonder as to how much of this is the fault of the hotel vs. a lazy cleaning staff. You would think those that a simply laundry room tally would tell you whether you aren't laundering as many sheets as your average occupancy.

On my last cruise I walked into my room, bed freshly made with new sheets, however my pillows were sitting on top of my dusty suitcase. I flipped a lid! It made me realize that he must put my pillow cases there every time he makes my bed and then May or May not remember if it needs new pillow cases. And thus I thought that must be an easy mistake all maids do who have to put the pillows somewhere aside when stripping a bed.

I was reading the comments elsewhere about this and 2 maids chimed in. One worked for a cruise that had time limits for how many rooms she had to do within a certain period which was unreasonable so of course things got skipped. The other one said she worked for a small boutique hotel and cleaned rooms in pairs so this never happened but also knew that large chain hotels do things differently, mentioning the time clock,

One time we got a room and I went out with my sister in laws. My husband stayed in the room and watched tv laying on top of the bed. When I got back (midnight) we pulled back the sheets and you can see where a woman who was on her period had sat on the bed and leaked. It was literally like 9" long. It leaked all the way to the mattress!! We had a fit, had to change our own sheets. They wouldn't give us our money back at all. Had to call corporate who refunded us the $100 for the room.

I am to the point where I will be bringing my own sheets with me to a hotel stay if I can (am driving) or asking for clean sheets off the cart or straight from the laundry room (if I've flown) and changing the beds myself.

I think it comes down to how much time a housekeeper is given to clean a room. My suspicion is that the times are unreasonably low, which makes it tempting to cut corners. So although the official line is that linens get changed between guests, if the room is left in a mess, the housekeeper may "sacrifice" changing the bedding to stay within the limits.

I'll be staying in a hotel in Aug for a week. I'm going to check in and then ask for a couple sets of clean bed linens and I'll remake the beds myself. That's just so gross.

Many years ago, I worked at a Hampton Inn as an assistant housekeeping supervisor. It was their policy to change sheets EVERY day, unless a guest specified not to. We went through so many sheets sets every day!! If a housekeeper was caught of not changing the sheets, they were fired on the spot. And I did have to fire a housekeeper for not changing the sheets in a checked out room.
She was suspected of not changing the sheets and we marked the sheets on each bed in every room she was to clean. Sure enough, we found one with the x we marked on the sheet. She was fired right then and there.
I also worked at a 5 star hotel in our area. Their housekeeping was sickening!! They did not change the sheets if the bed did no look like it had been slept in. ( I always made my bed because I didn't like it unmade.) They would wipe the tub with the USED guest towels. And wash the sink with the same potty brush they used on the toilet. Needless to say, I quit after a couple weeks. I had previously worked housekeeping in a hospital and was totally grossed out at the hotel.

It makes me want to take the sheets off the bed and put them in the floor every time I check out of a hotel. Force them to put on new sheets.

It was midnight and they handed her sheets. She had to call corporate also to complain. They reimbursed her for the room.

I didn't try to leave the night because I already knew that the town was booked because there was a race in town (kansas city) and everything was full.

This summer I have traveled an extraordinary amount. Each time I've traveled I've stayed in a hotel. I never let housekeeping into my room because I've heard how they sometimes go through your things. It sounds like I also need to get into the habit of asking for a set of fresh linens upon check in and plan on changing the sheets myself. This really does take some of the fun out of traveling.

This is part of the reason we bought a travel trailer. Everything about hotels is gross. While we still stay in hotels when traveling farther from home, I do enjoy sleeping on my own sheets and using my own things when we get away for short trips. We also get to bring our dog, which is a plus Chris (Houston)

One time we checked into a hotel and when I pulled the covers back, the sheets were smeared with makeup and, um, evidence of a tryst. Sheets that look unused, I can see someone trying to cut corners. But when it's obvious they were used? That was so weird to me (and of course, really gross!).
But another question - don't other people leave wrinkles kind of pressed into the sheets a little bit once you've slept on them? It seems like the majority of the time, you actually can tell just from looking if the sheets have been used. I'm NOT saying this excuses housekeeping not changing them, I'm just wondering.

When I worked at the Hampton, we did have a time limit to spend on a room. It was right about 22 minutes for a check out and less for a stay over. To help our housekeepers out, I would go to the checked out rooms and strip the linens and empty the trash cans. If I had time, I would also make the beds with fresh sheets. Not all hotels have a time limit on cleaning. My DD worked the front desk at hotel and the housekeepers would take their time on cleaning rooms.
Bedspreads were rarely changed, only when obviously soiled. It has been over 15 years since I worked there and I am sure many things have changed.
