We are heading to my BIL's place tomorrow, he's supposed to have scoped out a place north of him that we can view from. He says he knows a place off the beaten path. Fingers crossed. I've had our glasses for about 3 months. The news stories are apocalyptic, I really really hope they are over exagerations. We are headed for the ID/OR border.

I will be working that day as usual, no special plans... We are in Brooklyn, so we are not in the path.

For those who didn't get glasses, there are cool crafts you can do that can make viewing safe. I remember when I was a kid, we just punched a hole in paper and let it project the shadow onto another piece of paper, but there are some cool DIY viewers out of pringles cans that are essentially the same concept that look fun.

For those that can't find glasses you can safely view it in totality but once it moves (before and after) then it's not safe to view anymore. We are driving north for about an hour to be in the path of totality. I'm excited to see it- even with all of the crowds of people everywhere. It will only be about 82% here, so there won't ever be a safe time to look without the glasses.

we will only see 60% of it here in L.A. so there is no need for me to be ready about anything.

We live just south of KC and about an hr and 15 mins south of St Joe ( which is in totality, 2 min and 30+ seconds) My daughter is in a Science Program at the highschool and they are taking buses North to St Joe at 5am from here! My plan is to follow them right now, but we will see how bad traffic is once we hit the highway. Hoping at 5am, traffic is increased but not stopped! They are expecting over 500K people in St joe. I am sure it will be much crazier than that! I guess Mo highway patrol will be patrolling highways all day so that what happened at the World series Parade does not happen again. For those not from around here, When the Royals won the world series and we had the parade. School was canceled, Businesses closed and a Massive amount of people headed for the down town area of KC. People we so afraid of missing it and traffic was not moving, they abandoned their cars on the side of the highways ( main interstates) and walked to down town. it was insane!
Everyone around here is having trouble finding glasses ( thankfully I ordered mine in June) Our Hyvee store sold out of more than 20,000 of them in just a few hrs. I guess some of the local gas stations are selling the paper ones for $10 each! Same ones I paid $1 for online. I was nice enough to order for lots of our friends, but hubby said, Dang, You should of ordered a bunch! lol
Happy viewing everyone! We are praying for no clouds, cause right now there seems to be a small % in our forecast.

You can make a pinhole camera in about five minutes with a cardboard box and some tinfoil.

I think we are only expecting 70% totality. My plan is to stay inside and watch it on tv because it is hot as hades here. I'm going to protect my eyes and stay cool! The town I lived in during jr. high and high school is going to have totality, so I thought about going up to visit. However, I figured with my luck if I went to the trouble to go up there, it would rain all day. My staying home is insurance that there won't be rain!

88% here - DD17 will be in school (her decision - she's an AP senior and doesn't want to miss class), we're considering pulling DD10 and keeping her home. We'll make a viewer and maybe tee-shirts over the weekend...

I only have to step outside to our deck, put my approved glasses on and see 95% totality. That's good enough for me for not having to travel anyway and stay away from the crowds.

We are ready. NASA is coming and I am pretty sure it's going to be busy around town. We're going to relax, swim and enjoy ourselves.
It's crazy the number of people hawking eclipse glasses in my town today. 😎

Got a pack of 10 glasses months ago. They're all spoken for now and more family and friends are looking for some.
We're traveling ( I hope) what usually takes 45 minutes to camp out on a friend's property Sunday night. They are in the band of totality, but not the center.
It will be fun if the traffic doesn't stop us.
Plan b is to go up to my sin's house. They are 99.6. It won't be the same, but at least away from traffic.

We are driving to South Carolina to watch it in totality. Leaving in the middle of the night Sunday. DH has had the room booked for a year. DD lives in tiny town Idaho. Her apartment management said if there are any airbnb ads online it would be grounds for eviction! There are no hotel rooms in Idaho!

I have to work, but I have my glasses at my desk. I'll take a late lunch to go view what I can. I feel for DH. he works right in downtown KC. It's going to be a zoo and he may not make it home for a while after work.
I also put the dog in doggie daycare that day after they assured me they were keeping the animals inside during the eclipse. I figure you can't be too careful.

I will be on a plane crossing the path - no idea if it is safe to view, although some say yes some say no. I have no glasses and would expect they will make some announcement somewhere?

We are at 96% here which is good enough for me. My husband is still in denial about the crowds and lack of parking and traffic and insanity and wants to head down to Madras. I am having nothing to do with it and keeping my sanity it home. Jen

The only "safe" time to view an eclipse is when the moon obscures the sun 100% (totality) and that only lasts for a few moments - up to 2 1/2 minutes or so at the center of the path. There is zero safety in observing a partial solar eclipse, that includes anything less than 100%. Get some official glasses or make your own viewing box! Make a Box Pinhole Projector to Safely Watch a Solar Eclipse

I live where it will be 99.4% totality but my view will be blocked by a hill and tall trees so I'll just be content to watch day turn to night and back to day and then see endless views on TV later.

I would assume the FAs will make an announcement that you have to close the windows if it really isn't safe (the article I read had said the glass in planes makes it safe) or they would need to give everyone glasses.

My company is having an eclipse viewing party between 2:00 and 3:00 PM - they're proving snacks but we have to provide our own glasses. My co-workers and I were lucky enough to snag the last few pairs of glasses from a local library earlier this week. We'll only see 70-75% here but I think it will still be fun.

We have decided to stay the night about an hour South on Sunday night and make our way North early Monday morning. We will not travel on the main interstate and hope like hell we can pull off onto some dirt road and watch the damn thing. Can you tell this was not my idea? The area we are going is sparsely populated. Here's hoping we are avoiding the people not familiar with the area.

We are headed for the ID/OR border. Same here! It will be interesting to hear your story! ETA: I did not read your post right. We are going over the UT border to ID.

DH and I have glasses and the day off work. We're going to load up our dogs and drive a ways to see if we can get a bit closer to the path.

Totally ready. Have found a website to view it on. Have a to do list of calls to make to keep busy inside. Actually I have one more thing to do - I need to get my home support worker to close all my blinds.

Makes me wonder what Michael Scott and the Dunder Mifflin party planning committee would have done for an eclipse viewing Office party. One thing is for certain Michael would have done something incredible stupid and made everyone miss the eclipse except for for Kevin who ended up watching without glasses. jen

DH and I have glasses and the day off work. We're going to load up our dogs and drive a ways to see if we can get a bit closer to the path. They have been reporting the last 2 days that pets should stay inside during the eclipse, that dogs can go blind looking at the sun as well. I am not sure how many look up, but they said because the sky would change the chance increases. So if you take your doggies, just make sure they are not looking at the sky.

Can I ask a completely dumb question? How does one's view change outside of 'the path' ? I mean I can see the sun everyday. I don't understand. I'm sorry. I should probably google it.

Can I ask a completely dumb question? How does one's view change outside of 'the path' ? I mean I can see the sun everyday. I don't understand. I'm sorry. I should probably google it. In the path, you have the right viewing angle to see the moon completely block the sun for just a couple of minutes or so. As you move away from the path, the angle changes, and instead of seeing the moon completely block the sun, you see it block only part of it. The farther you get from the path, the less blockage you you see, hence the descriptions like "we are only seeing 82%."
