We have our glasses. My town is in the 99.6% totality. If I can get the day off, we will leave real early in the morning to travel about 30 minutes away to be in 100% totality. If I have to work, then I'll have to settle for 99.6%. I do plan on keeping my kids home from school for the occasion.

I'm headed to Lincoln City, Oregon with my husband and 3 month old (her first vacation!!). We rented a house 2 blocks from the ocean almost a year ago and are crossing our fingers for good/clear weather. We're driving down from Seattle the Saturday before, leaving around 5am to hopefully avoid the worst of the crush. Coming home on Tuesday.
My sisters live in Redmond and Terrebonne, Oregon (tiny communities in central Oregon), and are in the path of the totality. One sister actually teaches in Madras. They are treating this as a state of emergency and planning to stay home and shelter in place, other than my BIL who is a firefighter/paramedic and expecting to be incredibly busy. It's the peak of fire season; it has been unusually hot (over 100 for quite awhile now), and a billion people are going to be camping in the woods with fires. Yeesh!!

We're going to DH's hometown (Carbondale/Makanda IL), which has totality and is the longest point of the eclipse - I think like 2 minutes and 40 seconds of totality. NASA is going to be in the town, and the city is going to major expense to prepare for the influx. For comparison, it is a university town, and I think it is around 6000 people when there are no students, 26,000 with students -- and they are anticipating up to 100,000. We are staying with his brother (getting in Friday), planning to buy groceries and not go to any public places, and are doing an eclipse party at a friend's house. I ordered glasses off Amazon but haven't gotten them yet. Good reminder to check.
We REALLY hesitated to go because of the crowds the town is expecting, but it seemed stupid to us to miss it because we were letting other people make us avoid the town. We're just going to be prepared to avoid all main areas and extra time to drive anywhere.

The BIL we are staying with is also a firefighter/paramedic and said to not plan on seeing him much if at all that weekend. He is going to be stationed at the university football stadium, where they are having a huge event.

We're far from the path, so we won't be doing anything special. The next time (2024) the path is supposed to arc from texas to Maine, so we'll have a better chance then.

We’re going to a minor league baseball game in Salem-Keizer, which is in the path of totality. It’ll be fun. We have a ton of backroads ways to get there from here, so we’re not too worried about trafffic.

I live out of the path to view--so will travel 4 days early to the Kansas City area, stay with a relative and view the eclipse.
I have the glasses in my possession.

I received the glasses I ordered, thanks to the thread here. We will be staying in downtown Salem so all we'll need to do on eclipse day is walk outside.

And this is one of the reasons we gave away our tickets at the fair grounds. Would have been driving down from north of Vancouver, WA. With the news of massive traffic and an injuried pup at home, we decided 98.2% will be good enough. Also had family flying in who have flights at 4 pm Monday, so this will allow us to view it with them.

I just saw on the news that the parks in Salem will allow tent camping for eclipse viewing. Might do that. We actually have a plan A, B, And C. But C only had 99.6 totality.

This will probably be a dumb question, but I'm flying from Detroit to San Diego that day. I wonder how they handle midflight?

We are right in the path and should experience 2 minutes and 28 seconds of totality. We've been discussing where to be. Our neighborhood has lots of mature trees so I wonder if that might impact our viewing. We might go somewhere more wide-open just to be sure we don't miss a thing!

That's very interesting, that tourism is likely to impact towns that don't normally see influxes of people. Where we are, AL and FL, we are at 86 and 87%, not in the path, so don't expect any changes in population.

I live out of the path to view--so will travel 4 days early to the Kansas City area, stay with a relative and view the eclipse. The best places to view will be up North, and that area has a LOT of small towns. neat area, but be prepared for lots of people and not a lot of resources. That said, Union Station is planning a viewing party. My office didn't even close when the Royals won the world series, plus the schools are frantically telling us how much planning they're doing around the event (so please don't pull your kid out). Therefore I may see what I can see *with glasses* from the roof of our parking garage, but other than that it's going to be a low key thing for us.

We're north of Seattle with 88% coverage. Good enough. It'll be pretty cool!

I don't care what my school district says, I'm pulling my kids out. oh man, I'm having visions of the mess that happened when the Royals won. took me almost 2 HOURS to get from the bottom of hospital hill to the top, around the memorial and park at our building across from the memorial. My manager was pissed we were all late. Seriously? Good for you for pulling your kids out, we just got notice that ours is going to have them watch the eclipse from the playground (everyone gets glasses) but we're north so it's a little easier on us.

I'm in California, so no invasion here. But I boyfriend has an aunt who lives in a small town in Idaho and is expecting more people than it's ever held, she doesn't see how they will all fit.

I'm in the path of totality. I have 10 people coming to my house in order to see the eclipse, and I'm taking the day off. There is no WAY I'm going to be in that traffic!
One of my employees is in the National Guard and they are calling them up for extra security over that entire weekend plus the day of the eclipse.

I live in WA so we will get a pretty good partial. I was going to order glasses, but they had some at our Fred Meyer so I picked up enough for the family. I think I may take the morning off work. My cousin is driving to Oregon by herself to camp in someone's field - one of the places that is selling spots to a whole bunch of people. She is going 2 days early to make sure she gets there and is taking all her camping supplies so she can be self sufficient. She has had a rough summer and is in need of an adventure....

I'm not but will be! We are in 100% and my sister and BIL are coming down from Seattle. I'm planning on having everything in my house that I will need by Friday afternoon.
I am hoping my city survives the craziness they are predicting!

I can't wait for it to be over. I'm tired of hearing about it. I'm just a couple miles from 100% totality.

I'm about an hour from "totality" but am not planning on going anywhere. I hate traffic... If I run into any glasses I might pick them up, we will at least see a partial from our house.
DH will probably be stuck in traffic jam hell if he goes to work that day (it's already bad when there isn't an eclipse)... I'm sure he'll come home in an awesome mood, if he ever makes it home.
Who knew 2 minutes and 30 seconds of something would cause such excitement.

Just when I was thanking my lucky stars that we don't view eclipses as reasons to throw virgins into volcanoes anymore....along comes a bit of irrationality.... Anne Graham Lotz: "Jewish rabbi’s have historically viewed solar eclipses as warnings from God to Gentile nations. Therefore, my perspective on the upcoming phenomenon is not celebratory. While no one can know for sure if judgment is coming on America, it does seem that God is signaling us about something. Time will tell what that something is." Um. No. It's actually the moon signalling to us that it's directly in line w/the sun in a narrow band across the earth. Sheesh!!! www.annegrahamlotz.org/2017/08/07/gods-judgment-coming-america/

Ha ha, no. I should have ordered some glasses for myself and DD since she'll be home that day, but I've been preoccupied with other stuff and blew it. No one in town has any glasses anymore, oh well. I'm going to be watching BFF's 6yo grandkid (special needs) that afternoon too, but it's likely it will be cloudy here so we'll try to watch it on the NASA site online.
My sister lives very close to the path of totality, but she lives too far away to justify the trip just a week before school starts for DD. She said it's already nuts where she lives, and it's already even worse a few miles away. Besides I would never have been able to convince DH to drive for 15+ hours right into the chaos, LOL.

For those that can't find glasses you can safely view it in totality but once it moves (before and after) then it's not safe to view anymore.
We are driving north for about an hour to be in the path of totality. I'm excited to see it- even with all of the crowds of people everywhere.
