This is exactly why I never travel with my dog in the car without attaching his harness to the strap provided in his carseat. I know someone who was in a minor accident, but it scared his dog, prompting him to jump out of the open window. He was hit by oncoming traffic. My friend was devastated. They make so many devices that can attach to a seatbelt or the dog's carseat itself. I pray they find this special dog quickly.
I bought the type of carseat that is affixed to the back of the driver's seat for stability and then a strong metal arm lets the actual seat cantilever out over the center console section without actually resting on it. I can still access the console when the dog is not in his seat by just lifting the dog seat upward on its hinge, and it also places him higher in the car than his previous seat did, allowing him to look out the windows, even when lying down. He almost always leans his head on my arm and goes to sleep on a long drive, and is much calmer in the car than he was when he was in a seat in the backseat, and even when I moved that dog carseat to the passenger side. The biggest seller for me was that the center console position should make it so that an airbag does not hit him head on if it is deployed during an accident. I know that an airbag deployed into the body of a small dog like he is would have to do some damage.

I wonder if he was mortally wounded and hid to die. Absolutely heartbreaking. I hope they find him fast.

oh how sad! While I do think its possible he has gone to die - I recall reading a story of WFAA a couple of weeks ago about another dog who was in a wreck and was lost. They were able to find him and be reunited. Apparently some one had found him injured and helped him. Just took some time to put the pieces together of who he belonged to.

I would really recommend that you do your own research! I see there is a new study that has been done in the meantime. I'm worried that this is terribly unsafe for your dog. He is in a prime position to sail right through the windshield if his safety harness fails. My vet warns not to let our dogs ride in the front and recommends a crate for all pet transportation. When I was doing research, it seemed like The Center for Pet Safety was the only ones who tested safety harnesses in an actual crash. Many, many of the safety harnesses equipment failed, or the design of the device failed. From your profile photo, your dog seems very small (which would be less force on say, a latch). Hopefully this would work in his favor.

Thank you, Basket1lady. I will do a bit more research just to be sure. The harness that I use in the car has metal instead of plastic closures and is padded across the chest area, but it won't hurt to look at what is the latest info out there. Thanks !

I know he means the world to you. It's tough to have them ride safely in a car, and I know you would want to protect him as best as you can.

There's another thread here about how social media is not always so great for kids, and there are days when I just hate it, but Duncan being found is probably a direct result of it. I guess we have to take the bad with the good. So thankful for all the people who were out searching for him today.
