Not sure why anyone thinks it is yucky. If you look at chocolate icings for cakes, puddings and chocolate sauces you'll find many variants that are essentially the same pourable chocolate flavored topping. To me - non-American - it is the name. Gravy and chocolate don't belong together, because gravy is made from meat drippings. If you asked me about having chocolate SAUCE on something, I'd be in on it any day!

I had never heard of that recipe before this thread.
Sounds like it would be okay on hot buttered biscuits.

It is a special breakfast treat. Especially with hot, homemade, slathered with butter biscuits.

Chocolate gravy was a special treat for us as kids. Mom would make homemade drop biscuits with it. She will usually make it at least once when I go home to visit eastern Kentucky. Yum!
My Texas husband had never heard of it and thinks it's gross.

I live in NW Arkansas and had heard about chocolate gravy but hadn't tried it. Ds and I were in Mountain View AR a few years ago and got breakfast from the takeout counter at a local grocery store. Had to try the chocolate gravy, it was pretty good, though we like "regular" biscuit and sausage gravy better.

My grandma just passed 2 weeks ago at 93 yrs old. Chocolate late gravy was the last meal she cooked. She made it for breakfast while my aunt was visiting her. She fell, broke her hip and died 4 weeks later. Today, I made chocolate gravy in the sauce pan she always made it in. Delicious!

Biscuits and chocolate gravy is a staple around here. I moved from the maritimes so I was taken aback by it at first. My son LOVES it. I can do without.

Dh' s Tennessee family makes chocolate gravy occasionally, but I don't believe they have ever made it when we have been visiting. They also make "hamburger steaks" which I don't understand.

I was raised on chocolate gravy. My family is from Arkansas. It is a southern food thing....not specific to any one state but the only people that I have ever met that know what it is are from Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana. It is a recipe that came about during the depression when families would make dessert out of staples that they had in their pantry. Sugar, flour, cocoa, milk. It is downright delicious served over hot buttered biscuits. From Oklahoma here and we had it all the time. DH had it for breakfast almost every day. Made during the depression.

I'd never heard of it until 2 peas. Looking at the recipe itself, it doesn't sound bad at all! I can't get past calling it gravy. It sounds so gross.
