It wasn't a family treat, but I remember it being offered at summer camp. Being an affirmed chocolate lover, I had to try it and of course, I tried it every day after that! I think I only had it at camp. This would've been when I was in late elementary school and camp was in southeast OK or western AR depending upon the year.

We just called it cocoa sauce. I seriously doubt the pioneers used it though. Cocoa would have been a rather infrequent and exotic pantry item.

Never had it, but after looking at the recipe, I would try it, but probably not something I would cook. It sounds like pudding over biscuits, but uses flour for the thickening rather than cornstarch.

I've eaten it. Not often, but it's good. Open up a hot biscuit and melt butter in it, then top it with the chocolate gravy. The ones I've eaten have been a little thinner than pudding, though even though the recipe is similar. It's not something I eat regularly. Maybe once or twice a year.

Caller said her family made it thick, like pudding. Host said his family made it like gravy...much thinner than the caller.

I was raised on chocolate gravy. My family is from Arkansas. It is a southern food thing....not specific to any one state but the only people that I have ever met that know what it is are from Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana.
It is a recipe that came about during the depression when families would make dessert out of staples that they had in their pantry. Sugar, flour, cocoa, milk. It is downright delicious served over hot buttered biscuits.

Chocolate Gravy
1 cup sugar
1 slightly heaping tbsp Hershey’s Cocoa-you can use any cocoa, just not Nestle Quick.
1 heaping tbsp flour
1 cup whole milk
dash salt
1 tsp vanilla
Mix sugar, cocoa and flour together well in a non-stick pot. Stir in milk and salt. Cook on medium to high heat until thick while stirring…be patient! Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Serve over open-face hot buttered biscuits…guaranteed to make your family beg for more!
You can adjust this recipe to your taste. You might want to cut back on the sugar and add more next time depending on your family's taste buds. You can also add a little butter at the end.
This is a very basic recipe from the Ozark and Appalachian regions from decades ago. Our recipe has been in our family now for 4 generations.
If you love chocolate...you have to try this! You will never have to worry about your teenagers getting up late when you are serving this for breakfast!

I grew up in south Arkansas and never heard of it until I married and moved to central Arkansas. It's the bomb over hot buttered biscuits!

I grew up eating chocolate gravy! My family is from southern Missouri and this was a staple in our family for many generations. Sometimes I'll make it with water instead of milk. I always joke that I have a "body by chocolate gravy"!

To me gravy is made with drippings from the roasting pan (beef or turkey), so I immediately went savory with chocolate gravy and thought you were talking about a mole sauce. What I found most interesting about the linked recipe is the butter was added as a finish, not melted with the flour to form a roux. I would give it a try if offered.

I remember standing in my grannie's kitchen waiting for the chocolate gravy to be done. We had to eat our eggs and bacon first and we always saved a biscuit for chocolate gravy. When my mom came to take care of me last week when I had pneumonia....she made chocolate gravy for breakfast one morning. I was so happy!

I've heard of it, but it sounds yucky. And I say that as a committed sweets-and-starches lover.

Where is the "I've had it and Yuck" button?? My family didn't make it (Central Oklahoma and West Texas), but it's a family favorite of DH's family (Eastern Oklahoma.).

This is the first I have ever hear either of those terms, nor have I ever heard of cocoa sauce. I learn something everyday at Peas.

I've never tried it but it sounds wonderful.
I buy croissants from BJ's and put a piece of Hershey bar in them..then microwave for a few seconds, an eat them as a sweet snack so I think these biscuits and chocolate gravy sound divine!

Not sure why anyone thinks it is yucky. If you look at chocolate icings for cakes, puddings and chocolate sauces you'll find many variants that are essentially the same pourable chocolate flavored topping.

It's not like you're putting cocoa powder in pan drippings. Maybe using the term gravy is sending a mixed message. The way my Granny made it was a very mild cocoa flavor and creamy smooth. So delicious on hot biscuits. And after this thread it's going to be part of breakfast tomorrow.
