How far would $2000.00 get me in a scrap room rehab? I'm not very handy. I already have two desks and a room full of plastic containers. I'm tired of looking at all of the plastic. I want a pretty room to work in. I went to to the goodwill and found a custom built large tv armories made of solid oak and on the back was the signature of the craft mans name on it. It was on sale for $20.00. I was so bummed I had no muscle or vehicle to get it home today. I could find some on Wednesday but they will only hold it for 24hrs.

For $2000 you could have 5 rooms from IKEA! Yes, it's cheap but it's also crazy functional and you won't feel bad if you get some glue on your table. There are tons of YouTube videos of ikea craft rooms so you can see if that's your jam.

I would think $2000 would get you a long way. I hope the armoire is still there on Wed for you.

I spent a little over that and had my room professionally painted (I did not want to mess with the ceiling and converting the wood trim to white myself) and bought 15 pieces from IKEA.

$2000 would get you far, lady!
As for that armoire, did you ask the thrift shop if they know any delivery service companies? The thrift shops around here have business cards from people with trucks who deliver. I've had things delivered for under $40. Just something to think about.
Can't wait to see your room!!

I'd try offering them an extra $20 to hold it. It would still be a steal. I paid a heck of a lot more for my armoire at a furniture store. I really like it for paper storage.

If you want to stretch even further and don't mind used stuff (or waiting for a few months), set up some alarms on IKEA stuff on Craigslist, especially some of the solid wood pieces (Hemnes). For my last cross-country move, I had to sell most of my big furniture, and I replaced it on the other end so cheaply by being patient on Craiglist. I did the same thing in this house for the two years I had my own room. I see things like armoires, bookcases, and secretary desks (bottom fits 12x12 paper easily) all the time. I got my secretary desk for a tenth IKEA's asking price; it'd be perfect for diecutting machines or sewing machines if you already have scrapping desks. Then whatever you can't find on Craiglist to fill in the gaps, you can just get at IKEA.
I know the Expedit/Kallax pieces are popular with scrapbookers because they hold 12x12 paper and are cheap, but I would strongly caution against it because of the hidden cost of the bins. Cloth bins look kinda fugly and sturdy ones aren't cheap, and wood bins take time or money to build. I've made this mistake once already and found it's better to pay a little more for an armoire/bookcase with doors. Then I can pick my smaller storage bins to fit my stuff rather than shell out for stuff that needs to match the room and the Kallax.

For a solid oak armoire priced at $20, I'd be buying it and renting a U-haul truck.

I was at the goodwill. I never see good stuff there. It was almost like Christmas. I had to leave it there. I thought about renting a uhaul but could find the men on the spot to haul it home.

$2000 will get you a really nice room...and some stuff to use in it!
I would keep checking back the the Goodwill, you might get a different salesperson or manager that will hold it until Wednesday. Or ask anyone you know who has a truck if they can help.

$2000 could get you a long way with careful planning! You could even do some built in cabinets/counter. I have one wall of custom built ins, then some pottery barn shelf units (both floor shelf and wall-mounted), one ikea kallax and then the rest are small ikea or antique storage pieces. My craft table was exactly what I wanted and found after stalking Craigslist for awhile (I couldn't have afforded new - it's a small solid cherry Amish-style dining room table). If I were starting over, I would add them in the order I had listed above. If you prioritize what you need and get the most $$ done first, you can add the more inexpensive items over time.
A couple of years ago I really made an effort to get rid of most of my plastic storage. I didn't like how it looked and I repurposed most of it for hidden storage elsewhere.

I went to a furniture store and bought a six piece credenza for an office. It was slightly more than $20. . I also have ladder shelves that store a ton.

I went to a commercial office furniture resale place and was able to get a commercial quality, brand new big U shaped desk for $400.

I bought some hutches and cabinets at an unfinished furniture store and had them paint it for me. They delivered and installed them for me and they look like custom built ins. And the best part is I can take them with me when I move. I think they were around $2,000.

I second (or third) IKEA. I spent about $300 to fully deck out my craft space. $2000 will do you very well. I love my Kellax system. It has held up beautifully since I bought it a year ago.

There are a lot of tutorials on how to make your own storage for the Expedit/Kallax. I did buy a few of the rattan baskets for $12.99 and they aren't very sturdy but they are great for storing smaller light weight things like embellishments. I do think they are perfect for storing 12x12 albums.

$2k can go a really long way if you shop sales. i got rid of all my plastics too. i put money into Jetmax cubes and vintage metal storage baskets i found at yard sales. much cuter than the plastic rolling carts and containers i had.
